Tintype photograph of unnamed Dionne Family member. |
The French Dionne surname is rich in North American history and heritage. As early members of the family migrated to settle in wilderness areas for logging and farming, they are also found in colonial New England and the Upper Great Lakes long before the formation of Canada and the United States by the American Revolution begun in 1776.
From this lineage comes the Dionne families of Oconto County. This Dionne branch has been traced by several historians in French Canadian records as far back as Antone Dionne, born December 27, 1738 in Ste. Anne de La Pocatiere, Kamouraska, Quebec, Canada. His marriage to Marie Louise Caron, born November 15, 1745 and died March 26, 1803, produced 17 children found in records there.
The Oconto County lines continued in Canada with Marcel Dionne, born Nov 2, 1770, and Francoise Dube, born July 14, 1794, having their five children.

First child, Marcel Dionne Jr., born in Canada on July 14, 1794, married Marie Josephe Raymond and continued the line with seven more offspring, all born in Canada. Neighbors of the Dione family had emigrated to the southern territories of the Upper Great Lakes and those who had visited settlers there brought back news of the rich land and job opportunities offered by this wilderness development. In 1848 the family moved from Canada to Manitowoc, Wisconsin where they logged and farmed a wilderness homestead from the dense forest. Wisconsin was granted statehood and accepted into the United States that same year, 1848, making families living there citizens of the country. US Census renumerations for Wisconsin in subsequent years show significant concentrations of the Dionne family residing in Manitowoc, Brown, Oconto and Marinette Counties for decades to come.

Marcel Jr. is found on the 1880 US Census for town of Little River, Oconto County, Wisconsin. According to the census Marcel was an 85 year old widower living with son Joseph, daughter-in-law Mary and their nine children. His death notice would have made his actual age 88 years. It must have been a lively household since the children ranged in age from 21 years to 10 months old. Next door lived another son of Marcel, Peter and daughter-in-law Rose Ruelle with six children ranging in age from 19 years to 9 months old.

Joseph Dionne
Joseph Dionne, the popular landlord at Lena, entered the state the year the latter was admitted into the Union – 1848. A lady, a resident of Manitowoc county, going back to her home in Canada for a visit, and telling the wonderful possibilities of the new country, induced the Dionnes to immigrate to Wisconsin.
Joseph, the subject of this sketch, resides upon a farm eighteen years with in a mile or two of Lena, but for the past eight years he has conducted the hotel, which he now owns. OCR 11/1895
Joseph Dionne, born Sept. 4, 1832, married Mary Ruelle on July 12, 1858 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Mary was born 1844 and died April 17 1909. Censuses tells us that Joseph and Mary Dionne came to Oconto County, Wisconsin and first settled farmland in the town of Little River. Birth records for the children place the move to Oconto County between late 1877 and 1878. It appears from various news reports that the Joseph Dionne family moved again to a farm close to Lena and also opened a hotel in the village of Lena which he and Mary ran.
Albert Joseph Dionne married Margaret M. Allie
and they raised Prosper, Clifford and Ephraim Dionne. Ephraim L.
Dionne, born August 21, 1903and died December 22, 1927, married Ethyl
Harmeyer, born November 24, 1905 and died November 11, 1927. Kenneth Dionne
was their only son, living from February 16, 1927 to July 13, 1981.

1900 Census - Town of Lena, Oconto County,
Wisconsin
Joseph Dionne,Canadian born Sept 1832, came
to the US in 1849 and his wife Mary came to the US in 1850. They
were living in Lena in 1900 with daughter Jane, a milliner, and son Frank,
a laborer, both single. The couple had been married 41 years and Mary had
given birth to 12 children, 5 of whom were alive in the year 1900. However,
birth records show that there were 15 births to the couple. The discrepancy
may have been with the person giving the census information, who may have
been a younger child and did not know of all the previous births.
Joseph passed away Jun 2, 1907.
Dennis Dionne, born in Wisconsin August 1864 and wife Elizabeth Laplante, Wisconsin born July 1866, also lived in Lena where they were hotel keepers with two of their children. In 1900 they were married 11 years, on June 24, 1889 in Oconto County.

Albert Joseph had married Margaret Allie, born December 1865, 15 years earlier, and her single brother, Prosper Allie Feb 1870, was living with the couple and their two sons, Prosper and Clifford. Margaret had given birth to 4 children, 2 survived. Only 4 houses away lived his widowed aunt Emily Ruelle, sister-in-law of Albert Joseph's mother Mary, and several Ruelle cousins.
Many of the Dionne family of Oconto County are buried in the St. Charles Cemetery in Lena. A number of others are at the Catholic Cemetery in city of Oconto.
