Photographs contributed by descendant: Jean

I am attaching some old photos of Suring.  These were found in an old camera of my fathers (Eugene Detert)  after he passed away.  My nephew was able to have them developed.  They are from the early 1940's.

Frederick Detert and Carolina Schultz who came to Waupaca County, Wisconsin about 1883. Fred Detert was born 1819 in the County of Saatzig in Pommern, now part of Germany. He married Carolina, born 1824, in 1850 in Kreis Saatzig and had 7 children.  Their adult children, Herman, Karl Friedrich, William D and Friedricka W. had immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 and 1882, initially settling in Waupaca County. All four married within two years of immigration.

Frederick Detert died in Waupaca County between 1895 and 1900. He is found as Head of Household on the 1895 Wisconsin State Census in Marion. Carolina was a widow on the 1900 Federal Census. A record of his death has not yet been found and he is assumbed to be buried  near his wife Carolina in Greenleaf Cemetery in Marion where they lived.Wife Caroline Schultz Detert died in Marion on in 1905.

Their married children started families, worked in the lumber, various industry, cheese making, farming, food service, moving to Shawano and Oconto Counties in Wisconsin where descendants  continue to live.
There is more about  the family in  DeGraff's  type-written manuscript, only a few pages, which is on film at the Family History Library. The film number is: FHL Film 1674177 item 5.

The Detert Family opened the Detert Restaurant and Cafe in Suring after aquiring the Dieck Hardware Store building in 1924. They eventually incorporated the building next door by enclosing the space between, and added half of the old, original Suring Home to one end by moving it.
