Descendant of Muriel Marina Grunert and her parents Hattie Cummings and Louis H. Grunert: Frank Gwartney


Muriel Marina Grunert was the youngest of three children (March 2, 1917 in Oconto - December 24, 1981 in Alaska) born to Hattie Cummings and husband Louis H. Grunert. Brother Orville, born in 1910, and then sister Geraldine, born in 1914, preceded her.
 
Muriel's mother Hattie Cummings was born in 1888 in Oconto, Wisconsin to parents born in Deer Island, New Brunswick, now Canada. Her father was George Albert Cummings and her mother was Harriet Butler. That couple came to the US in 1865 and had 7 children, with Hattie as the youngest. George and Harriet are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto, Wisconsin. George was a carpenter who died March 27, 1916, at age 74 years of organic heart disease (mitral stenosis).
Muriel's father, Louis H. Grunert was born June 28, 1879 in Wisconsin to German born parents and worked as a lumberman; first as a day laborer in the Oconto city sawmills and later as a skilled lumber inspector and grader at the mill. He married in 1906 and in 1910 the family of 3 lived on Second Street, 2 buildings from Colius Ave. By 1920 the family of 5 lived in the middle of three houses on Gauthier Ave. just off McDonald Street in city of Oconto. 
 
Father of Louis H. Grunert (Muriel's grandfather) was Paul Rudolph Grunert, born Dec. 1, 1841 in Oschatz, Saxony,  now Germany. Paul came to the US in 1850 with his parents (Muriel's great grandparents) John Gotlieb Grunert (1791-1859), mother Caroline Wilhelmina Martin (1877-1857, both buried in Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin). Paul Rudolph Grunert was the youngest of 9 children, of which 8 lived to adulthood and immigrated in 1850. Paul died August 29th, 1919 in Oconto and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery there.
 
Louis' mother (Muriel's grandmother) was Barbara Dietrrick, born July 23, 1849 in Buffalo, NY. Her father was born in New York State and her mother was born in Germany. Barbara died March 26, 1901 in Oconto, before Muriel was born, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery there.
 
Muriel's father Louis H. Grunert was a quiet person, but was an active part of his community. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War (1898) in Cuba, servicing in the Wisconsin Infantry's 2nd Regiment. He was often called upon as pallbearer in the early 1900's for the parents of friends and neighbors he grew up with in Oconto. Several of his siblings lived in and around Oconto and were proprietors of businesses there.  Louis H. Grunert passed away in city of Oconto, September 21, 1967 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery there.
 
Muriel's mother Hattie Cummings was the youngest of 7 children, all born in Oconto, Wisconsin. Most lived their entire lives in Oconto. Hattie passed away in Oconto, March 17, 1939 at the age of 51 years, from an abdominal infection (pelvic peritonitis). She is buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
 
Muriel's sister Geraldine Grunert passed away at age 21 years on February 6, 1936, from pneumonia. She was single and is buried with her parents in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.
 
Muriel's brother Orville Grunert passed away October 1, 1979 at the age of 69. He was a truck driver. He is buried with his parents and sister in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.
