Significant research has been done, and is available from many sources, on the ancestry of Harrison Cooley who was born March 1, 1819 in Springfield, Massachusetts and his wife Harriet Day who was born March 18, 1821 in Sandisfield, Massachusetts.  They met and married in Portage County, Ohio in 1842. and started their family in Ohio. By 1870 Harrison and family had moved to Van Buren County, Michigan where most of his 10 siblings also resided and produced large extended families.

1880 Harrison, Harriet, son Warren (with his wife Lucira and children) and daughters Emily and Minerva had settled into farming in Hickory, Maple Valley, Oconto County, Wisconsin. Harrison, in his senior years, listed himself as an Oconto landlord in 1900.

Emily married William C. McKenney in Oconto County and and Minerva (Minnie) married Francis H. Cheffings in Oconto County where each raised a family. Several of Harrison and Harriet's grandchildren also married Oconto County spouses with the surnames of Livingston, Perkins, Simpson, Bowman, and Davis. Many member of the family migrated to Oregon.

Benjamin I. Cooley learned the skill of weaving in England and immigrated from England to North America in 1640 and settled in Longmeadow (originally Springfield), Hampden County, Massachusetts. Over the years he "took on" a number of young boys as apprentices and since weaving was a much sought after skill there was money to be made. From the first Benjamin was very active in civic affairs; holding office for many years, serving on committees and juries. His judgment was well respected according to records. With a stead and lucrative income, Benjamin soon was investing in real estate, proving himself to be an astute businessman.

"Few dividends slipped away from Benjamin Cooley, except as he made exchanges for property more useful and convenient to him. In 1647 he was taxed for 40 1/2 acres, while the inventory of his estate in 1684 included 527 acres exclusive of the "land that Obadiah Cooley occupieth." This latter tract, at Main and York streets in Springfield, comprised perhaps ten acres, giving as a total, 537 acres acquired during Benjamin Cooley's forty years as an inhabitant of Springfield. Longmeadow Historical Society http://www.longmeadowhistoricalsociety.org/

Benjamin married Sarah Savage in 1842 and began this Cooley lineage in America.  The library and Historical Society in Longmeadow have an extensive collection of information regarding all the Cooley descendants of Benjamin and Sarah, many of whom remained there still. In Longmeadow, there is a Cooley Street and markers on the historical homes, many of which were Cooley.  Benjamin lived a long life with his wife Sarah. They had 8 children. He died 1684 and one week later Sarah, his wife,  joined him. They were buried in the original church cemetery in Longmeadow, now an outdoor museum named YE OLDE BURYING YARD with tours of the gravestones and history of the people buried there.
 
                                    Cooley Family In England

The Cooley Family goes back as early as records of residents were kept in England.  Some research gives the original spelling of the surname as Cole, then Coles, then Cooley, beginning with Thomas Cole born 1494 in Allhallows Church, London, England.  Three generations later, the father of  Benjamin I Cooley, William Cooley was born 1590 in Denmark to English parents who almost certainly were among the families living in self imposed exile due to religious and political views. Benjamin was considered a "Puritan" when he came to America in 1640. That term was used in the England of his father's day, from the late 1500s well into the 1600s, to describe a variety of protestant groups who supported Church of England and governmental reforms that were not accepted by the King. Men active in the reform movement, who were threatened with incarceration, took their families to the Netherlands and Denmark, where there was safety. However, even the skilled craftsmen among them had great difficulty finding employment during the economic struggles in those refuge countries. William Cooley's family returned to England, as so many other did. William married Joan Arnott in England and they had one known child, Benjamin I. Cooley, before William died at age 28 years in 1618 when Benjamin was 3 years old. The first English civil war over government and religious reform began in 1842, two years after Benjamin I. Cooley had emigrated. His mother did not travel to the new world with him and is documented as having lived to the age of 100 years in England.

BENJAMIN COOLEY (1617 - 1684) was the village weaver of Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. He came to America in 1640, probably by way of Holland, as no British vessels from the time list him as a passenger. He married a woman named SARAH (Savage, Tremaine or Colton). Benjamin died on August 17, 1684 in a part of Springfield that is now called Longmeadow. His wife died a week later, on August 23. They had three daughters and five sons:

Benjamin Cooley was here in 1644, his name appearing in the records of that year. Two years after his arrival he was chosen a Selectman and served in that office 18 years, the longest period of service given by any one person. He was much employed in town affairs and was on all important committees during his active life. Samuel Terry was bound to service by William Pynchon to Benjamin Cooley, "weaver," for three years and six months, and it would appear that Cooley must have been engaged in weaving in England before coming to this country. His marriage is not on record here. He died August 17, 1684, and his wife, Sarah, died August 23, 1684

OBADIAH COOLEY.

Obadiah Cooley, son of Benjamin and Sarah, married Rebecca WILLIAMS at Windsor. She was a daughter of John Williams. He died September 3, 1690, and his widow married John WARNER, and died October 18, 1715. Obadiah's children were:

OBADIAH COOLEY (II) is the son of OBADIAH COOLEY I (1646–1690) and REBECCA WILLIAMS (1649–1715), who married 2nd to JOHN WARNER in 1691 after the death of her husband. Obadiah was just 12 years old when he lost his father. Obadiah II is the grandson of BENJAMIN COOLEY and SARAH COLTON/SAVAGE, English immigrants and early settlers of Springfield, Mass.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Clough-Huston company chapel for Warren Cooley, 84, resident of Salem for 22 years, who died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.B. Simpson, near Turner. Mrs. Cooley survives her husband.

Sons and daughters surviving are Ralph Cooley, manager of Bishop's clothing store; E.W. Cooley, grocery store proprietor; and Ellis Cooley, Salem clothier; Mrs. D.B. Simpson of Turner; Mrs. L.J. Bowman of Peshtigo, Wis.; and H.W. Cooley of Freewater, Ore. Twenty grandchildren and six great grandchildren are also left.

Rev. D.J. Howe, pastor of the First Christian church, officiated at the services Monday afternoon and interment took place in Lee Mission cemetery at the side of his son, Herschel. Deceased was a member of the First Christian church.

Mr. Cooley was ill less than a week with a severe heart affliction. Several years ago and again last spring, he suffered attacks but had apparently recovered from them.

Mr. and Mrs. Cooley observed their golden wedding anniversary here 12 years ago and two years ago they were honored on their diamond anniversary. Mr. Cooley had lived in Salem since 1907 when he sold his farm at Suring, Wis., and came here to retire."

Mrs. Jennie Lucira (Cooley) Simpson, 80, a late resident of the Methodist Home, Salem, died Wednesday at her home.

A native of Maple valley, Wis., she moved to Salem in 1907. She was a member of First Christian Church here for 66 years.

Survivors include sons, Garlend L. and Col. Garold I. Simpson, both Salem; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Rev. Charles Shorow officiating. Private interment will be at Lee Mission Cemetery. Rigdon-Ransom mortuary is in charge. The family suggests contributions to the church or Methodist Home.

  Daniel B. Simpson, 81, died unexpectedly Saturday at his Salem home, 1550 Norway St. NE.

A resident of the area since 1907, Simpson was born in Wisconsin.

He was superintendent of Salem's street car system for many years, and later owned Nob Hill Motel in South Salem until his retirement 11 years ago.

Simpson was a member of First Christian Church here for 58 years. He and his wife, Jennie L., observed their 63rd wedding anniversary Tuesday.

Survivors in addition to the widow include sons Col. Garold I. Simpson and Garlen L. Simpson, both Salem; sisters in Wisconsin and Wyoming; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Howell-Edwards mortuary, Rev. Orville Mick, Albany, and Dr. J. Maurice Thompson, Salem, will officiate. Interment will be in Lee Mission Cemetery.
