Many of the original families of St. Mark congregation in Spruce first came to Wisconsin from the Providence of Pomerania, Prussia, (now Germany) initially settling in Brown County, Wisconsin in the 1860s. As the children born in Germany reached maturity, some began farming in town of Spruce, Oconto County, Wisconsin. These were the families that built St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1892.
