St. Joseph of the Lake Catholic Church
now a Keshena mission church
A church was erected at Little Oconto, later South Branch, in 1875 by the Indians and some skilled white carpenters.  After a few years this church was inadequate and in 1891 a second, larger church was built. The congregation was Native American families and 18 white families from How and Breed townships in Oconto County. Cathe Ziereis

Prior to 1907, Catholics in this area (town of How) went to a variety of parishes which included St. Mary in Shawano (Shawano County), St. Michael Church in Keshina (Menominee County), and to the St Joseph of the Lake mission church in "Little Oconto" now called South Branch, where there is also a small Catholic Cemetery (now Menominee County).
