Ancestors of Joseph Cardinal
 

Generation No. 1

 1.  Joseph Cardinal, born Bet. 17 Oct 1830 - 1833 in Detroit, Wayne County, MI1; died 21 Aug 1913 in Oconto, WI2.  He was the son of Joseph Boutin Dit Cardinal and Marie Josephte Biscornet.  He married (1) Mary Ann Johnston 01 Jul 1859 in Green Bay , WI.  She was born 10 Apr 1842 in Jefferson Military Barracks, St. Louis, MO3, and died 02 Dec 1935 in Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co.,WI4.  She was the daughter of Samuel Johnston and Mary Ann Langrill.

Family Story:
Then the two men were working out in the woods one day and father Joseph said to young Joseph (Abt. 16 then) it's time to head home so we can clean up and get ready to go to confession. Young Joseph stated he did not want to go because he didn't want to confess his sins to a man any more, that sins should only be confessed to God. Father Joseph said I will disown you and you shall never shadow my doorway again if you don't go with me. Young Joseph disappeared. Eventually father Joseph and Josephine had another son whom they again named Joseph! After father Joseph died and Josephine was up in age she somehow found the wayward Joseph and asked him to come and see her before she died. He did. The oldest Joseph married Mary Ann Johnson in Green Bay, WI and he worked in a brickyard in Oconto,WI

It is estimated that Joseph arrived in Oconto about 1851 and spent a couple of years there.  Unproven leads to suggest there was an Uncle ahead of him here.  Joseph then moved to Casco in Kewaunee Co. where he floated back and forth from Green Bay, Casco, and Oconto.  He settled back in Oconto in 1884 until his death.

There are many additional leads, that tend to make this story believable.  Additional research is working on the other young Joseph.  Some census records show a younger Joseph in the household after the old Joseph left.

Birth year variation of 1842, 1840

"Mary Ann Johnston was born April 10, 1842 at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO.  She traveled from Jefferson Barracks to Green Bay in a covered wagon, crossing the Fox River on a ferry, at the age of six."  At time of death, 21 grandchildren and 36 greatgrandchildren.  Mary Ann died at her daughters home, Mrs. Lucius Albert Clark [Josephine May Cardinal] in Two Rivers at 2:30 in the morning. Mary was a charter member of the G.A.R."
