My maternal grandfather, John Anthony Keron, was born in Oconto in 1900, along with his sister, Margaret Victoria Keron McBride, born in 1898, and apparently he had a younger brother, Aloysius Benedict Keron, born in 1902 in Oconto.  The family story is that Aloysius died as a child, but I have no idea where or when he died, or the cause of death.  I wonder if Aloysius is buried in Oconto.  The family relocated at some point to Malden, Washington, so little Aloysius may even be buried in Washington.

My grandfather moved to Butte, Montana and worked in the copper mines, then after he married my grandmother, the family moved to California when he
got work as an iron worker on the Golden Gate Bridge. From there, they moved to the Los Angeles area where he worked in the borax mines in the Mojave Desert.

My grandfather’s parents were John Henry Keron (born in Illinois in 1854) and Almira Bohan.  I now know through your group that they were married on August 24, 1896.  The link to their wedding announcement in an Oconto newspaper was just amazing to see.  I would never have known that Almira’s sister Julia Bohan was her attendant!   I have a beautiful full-length photo of Mae and Julia from the early 1900s, taken in front of a San Francisco home. I think that the Bohan sisters may also be from Oconto.  The fourth Bohan sister was Lizzie.  She married a Murphy, and her descendants are here in California also.

Generation 1

William Bohan was born in County Kerry, Ireland in the second half of the 1700's. According to the 1871 Census for New Brunswick Canada, he was age 95 years and came  to North America and settle in Canada in the year 1830. He was married in Ireland to Mary Spencer also of County Kerry. Mary Spencer Bohan was age 70 years on the 1871 Canadian Census and had immigrated the same year as her husband.. The had their first four children in Ireland. The last four of their 8 children were born in New Brunswick, Canada. The oldest, Jeremiah Bohan, fathered the Bohan line that eventually settled in Oconto County, Wisconsin, USA.

Generation 2

Jeremiah Bohan came to Canada from his birthplace in Ireland in 1830. He was the oldest child of William and Mary Spencer Bohan. The 1861 census of Canada listed him as being 51 years of age and owning and farming land in Barnaby River, New Brunswick, Canada. He married Bridget Mervick (also spelled Mevick) She had come from Ireland to Canada in 1840. They raised six children and Jeremiah died March 12, 1884 in Barnaby River, New Brunswick, Canada. Oldest son James continued the line that settled in Oconto County, Wisconsin.

Generation 3

James Bohan was born in  Barnaby River, New Brunswick, English Canada on April 1, 1835. He married Margaret Jane Moloney in Canada and they had their first two children there. The family immigrated to the US in 1867 and settled in the city of Oconto, Wisconsin. James was a laborer in farm work. Four more children were born to them in Oconto before James Bohan died April 29, 1884.

Mr. James Bohan died at his residence, in this city, on Thursday last.  The deceased has resided in this place for seventeen years, and was much respected.  He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss.

The widow Margaret Moloney Bohan continued to live in city of Oconto, raising her children with the help of eldest son William Bohan. Daughter Julia was a school teacher and daughter Mae was a dressmaker living at the Oconto home in 1900. Margaret died in Oconto on March 12, 1902. Julia never married, and she is buried in San Francisco with another of the Bohan sisters, Mae.  Julia was a school teacher in San Francisco and Mae was a hat designer. The fourth Bohan sister was Lizzie (Marie).  She married a Murphy, and her descendants are here in California also.

Almira Bohn was born 1869 in Oconto, Wisconsin, the first of her family to be born in the US. She had five siblings. Almira became the second wife of John Henry Keron on August 24, 1896 in Oconto.
