                             Frechette-Oconto-Question
Sophie La Brosse was married to John Frechette and they lived on McDonald St. in Oconto next
to the railroad tracks. They had children, Paul A, Nora, Harry Michael and Pearl. Those four I
am positive about. Now another name pops up as one of their children and that would be Lloyd
Raymond Frechette. He graduated Oconto High in 1915. The 1900 census states he is two years
old and living with John & Sophie. Paul A does not appear on the census but his birth date was
1-10-1898 which would of also made him two. I can not locate any birth information for Lloyd.
Would anybody know if Lloyd and Paul were twins????

I am doing reserach for a John Sinai Frechette. He was born, where abouts unknown in 1889. He
moved to Michigan at some point where he died in 1974 on Drummond Island. The real kicker is
that there is a name change to John Sinai King. No other information is known except that he had

                               County: Harry M Frechette 20 Sep 1891 Oconto 0220 000974 Marie R Frechette 10 Nov 1902
                               Oconto 0221 001194 Paul A Frechette 10 Jan 1898 Oconto 0220 002651 The 1900 Census does
not have a Paul listed for the family, but Lloyd is listed as being born in Jan 1898. The 1910

Looking for information on Abel and Leah Conners who were listed in the 1880 census for
Oconto,Wi. Both were listed as born in New Brunswick, Canada. On and old letter wrote in 1880
from Campbellton, NB.Canada to my G Grandmother, Ellen Connors.. It says that "Abel(or Alec)
Connors had come home from Oconto to visit his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Nelson)
Connors. Aunt Elizabeth had got badly hurt by a bull. In a month after Abel went back to Oconto,
she received a telegram that Abel had died from scarlet fever. His wife had had twins 3 months
before he died. In checking the birth records I see that Elizabeth M. and Mabel E. Conners were
born June 6, 1880 and that Abel Connors had died Sept. 4, 1880. Wondering if this would be his
twin daughters? Also If anyone knows who they married or anything about their families or any

I'm looking for an early picture of our home. The address is 101 East First Street,Gillett, possibly

property before the home was built, I understand it was a deer preserve. I understand J.M.
Ankerson built the home where he lived with his nephew Emery Ansorge. Emery lived there until
the late 40's or 50's. The home was then owned by the Richert family until the mid 70's. It was
owned by two other families before the Rademann's bought it in 1979 and own it still. Any
pictures from the time it was built until 1979 would be appreciated. We are guessing the home

Grace circa circa 1893 to 1936. A 1920 plat for the area shows both churchs. One located west
of the school house on the SS towards then highway 41. The other located on what is now Wood

I found two possible entries for your Mary Zimmerman on the 1880 US Census for Wisconsin.
The second one has a name most similar to her mother Ernestina. Censuses were government

sometimes did not happen. Sometimes it helps to say what is written on the census and see what
"sounds" closest to what you are looking for. There is no 1890 census and she may have been

unloaded a barge of lumber following which they had a few drinks and then decided to go for
more, either to Marinette or Menominee. The boat they were in capsized and all hands were
drowned. This must have occurred about 1875 as his widow remarried ca. 1878. This family lived
in Marinette in 1870 (census) but a number are buried in the Rapid River Cemetery. I would be
interested to hear from anyone who may have information.

I'm looking for information or pictures of a school in 1881 Oconto. A teacher was there named
William Emerson Ritter. I'm not sure what school or what grade he taught. He went on to do
great things as a biologist. Can anyone help me?

                                 William E. Ritter
On the 1880 US Census, Page 3 of City of Columbus Ward 1 & 2, Columbia County, Wisconsin
(Columbus County Census Page 28 C), There is a William R. Ritter, age 24, who was a school
teacher. He was boarding with the William L. Lewis family on their farm as a boarder. Mr. Ritter
was born in Wisconsin. Both his parents were born in New York. The daughter of Mr. Lewis
was named Lillie and she was a music teacher, age 21. (Possible future marriage partner?) This
was the only William Ritter that I found in WI in 1880 who matches your description. Since the
census was taken in July of 1880, it is possible that he continued teaching there, rather than in
Oconto County in the year 1881. I have not found a record of him in Oconto County as of yet.

the newspaper article: Oconto County Reporter July 31, 1880 Obituary-The many friends of Mrs.
Dr. O?Keef, were sadly shocked on Saturday morning to hear of her sudden demise. She had
been in poor health for sometime past but was not supposed to be in any immediate danger.
Friday night she suffered considerably and Dr. O?Keef (her husband) was up with her until

area. It stands about 6 inches tall and a bit wider. It is a burnt reddish clay and appears to have
been hand made. It has a wooden stem handle which is tied to the handle loops on the pot with a
grassy material. There is no ornamentaion other than a simple embossed pattern around the top of
the pot and the top of the lid. I recall my grandmother visiting "French town" with her
grandmother at various times each year to talk with friends and smoke clay pipes. I wonder if this
tea pot might have a French town origin. My Belanger/Belongia's settled in Oconto about
1850-60. They were Moise and Josepth Belongia and settled at Little River as I recall. My great
great grandfather Louis Hubble Belongia was a timber cruiser and worker with George

                             GRIFFIN FAMILY OF PESHTIGO
I am looking for information on my grandparents. My GreatGreat Grandparents were Alfred &
Margaret Griffin. They moved to Peshtigo from Ohio in the 1840's. Alfred started a freight
company. They had 2 sons, James & William Griffin. James was a cook in the lumber camps &
some time in the 1870's began running the Peshtigo Company boarding house. James married
Katie (Katherine) R. Kelly. They had 2 sons Alfred, my grandfather, born 1875 & Samuel Griffin.
I am looking for any kind of info you might have as I don't know much about them. The where
abouts of pictures of the freight co. or boarding house & especially of my grandparents so I could

                             Allies of Oconto County
Does anyone know the ALLIES of Lena and Little River? My grandmother, Margeret Allie
graduated from high school, probably in Lena about 1894-1898. Is there anywhere I can find this
documented? She met and married Ben Couillard in 1900 in Lena. Yes, I have researched the
Couillard line, but I don't have much on the ALLIES. Other names in this line would be Paquin,
Paquette, Burbey Gaffney, Benoit, Ducharme. There is Chippewa in our line. Any help would be
                               appreciated. Thank you.

                                 Re: Allies of Oconto County
I am also interested in the Allie families. The surname is spelled several different ways, but I
believe there is a connection to my branch through David Alley. David may be a nick name or a
middle name. He married Rose Richard/s. THeir first child Viola Alley is reported to be born in
Burhnamwood, Shawano Co., WI, 1898. Viola's birth was reported some time later and it is
possible that she was born in IA. David and Rose are both shown as being born in Canada. From
all my researching I have noted that the family moved frequently. They may have been in MI and
MN also. David, Viola's father was born <1870>. His parents may be David Alley and Hannah
Maxon. I have found something showing that they were married in Two Rivers, WI, but this may
be wrong. They could have been married in Canada. From Censuses it appears David <1870>
family immigrated to WI <1878>. His siblings were born in the US. I would be interested in
exchanging info with anyone interested in these families. My mother and I both believe that there
must be Native American ties on the Alley side of her family. The Alleys of my mother's family
all have distinctly Indian features, while the other side is a mixture of different colors and
                               schemes.

Hello, You mention a Hattie Fye born to Mary Anne and Elisha born in 1865. In the pre 1907
Wisconsin Marriage index for Oconto County there is a marriage listed for Harriet Fye 25 Mar
1882 01 0228 N 07799. If this could be the same person, the mother's maiden name would
probably be on the marriage certificate. Also it appears that Elisha (Elias) Fye was mentioned in
the Oconto County Reporter in 1895 "Oconto Falls - Elias Fye, an old resident of this place,
passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning at the age of 83 years. He had not been well for
some time but was only seriously sick for a few days." His widow's maidenvname may be found
on his death certificate Both of which you can make an on line request for only the copy and

                                 Re; 1850 Census
Here's the info/opinion I got from Diane Nichols about the 1850 census: As for "forest dwellers,"
my understanding was that this referred to the early settlers/pioneers scattered all over northeast
Wisconsin in 1850 [the territory covered by Brown County at the time]. Though Oconto was the
biggest settlement at the time, it too was just getting started as a small town with a small number
of permanent residents [probably well under 50]. There was a large Native American settlement
in Oconto and Oconto Falls at the time as well but I don't believe they were ever counted in a
census. So bottom line is that I believe the 400 forest dwellers number was an estimate only
because it would've been too time-consuming and cost prohibitive to send someone out to find all
these residents. An estimate was easier. That's my 'nickel's worth.' Diane Nichols, local historian.

not fit into my research, if you are researching these individuals contact me. I will provide the
information I have. Fred Vogt, born 1883 - Germany; Otto J. Vogt, born 1871-Germany; Louis
Funk, born 1874-Germany; Gust Hunt, born 1890-Russia. Lived in Gillette; Wm. Hunt, born
1865-Poland. Lived in Gillette: NOTE: Possible alternate spelling for the Hunt is Hundt. For those
researching for naturalizations papers for German ancestors. Of 21 naturalization papers found 12
were naturalied in 1906 although some had immigrated as early as 1868. History informs us
tensions with Germany started about this time. Three were naturaized in 1917, the year diplomatic
relations were severed with Germany before WWI. Also it was found that they seemed to be
naturalized with a group of family members. In one case 3 brothers, 1 brother-in-law and 1

who needs it. The original must remain with the owner. Early next week, I will post the photo on
the mentioned site if you wish to wait for a glance.

Tasha, I know you received the Stewart file I emailed you, right? We are now working on the
Wilson file and will be emailing that soon. As everything is always in a state of flux, as soon as I
send you something or post it, it is out of date. I have to get my reserch interests on the Oconto

I have a Herman and Frederick Ristow as children of Charles Ristow and Wilhelmin Kutke. They
lived in the Pensaukee area of Oconto County. Since I have found many woman with the name
Wilhemina go by the name of Minnie, these two could possibly be siblings. Frederick was married
