Joseph Leigh, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Leigh, early pioneers, was born May 1, 1881, on Lake Michigan while his parents were en route to Manitowoc. He was married in the fall of 1871 to Apphia Couillard, the first white child born on the Oconto River. They went through the Peshtigo fire together, Mrs. Leigh being at that time a teacher in that district. Mr. Leigh, during his childhood had Indian children for playmates and his life as filed with interesting experiences which he often related to the delight of his listeners.
Survivors are six daughters and two sons: Mrs. Omar G Bryant, Mrs. P. B. Kermott, of Milwaukee; Mrs Edward Apel of Eau Claire, Mrs. John Cleveland of Oconto Falls and Mrs. William Chesley of Lena, and Arthur od Couillardville and Chester of Oconto.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Omer G Bryant, Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Kermot, Robert and William Kermott, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meyer, Mr. and Mrs Warren Underwood, Mr. and Mrs John R Mathews, all of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs Edward Apel, Mrs. Lucille Bennie, daughter Bonne Mae and Bernard Henning of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. George Green of Altoona, Wis., Mrs Helen Palmater, daughter LaVaun of Minneapolis Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fox of Columbus, Wis.
