The deceased was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, May 2, 1850 and came to Oconto County at the time of the Peshtigo Fire in 1871, living here since then. July 6, 1874 he was married in Belleville to Miss Catherine Nevin who survives to mourn his loss with five daughters, Mrs. John Noonan, Miss Frances Herald, Miss Lottie Herald, Miss Kathryn Herald, all of Oconto, Mrs. George Melchoir, Algoma. Word of his death was recieved here late Thursday afternoon and John Noonan, Jr., James Herald, M.F. Manning, John McGinnis, Martin O'Donnel went after his remains, which were brought on the midnight train Friday to Stiles, Jct., where they were met by carriages and reached here about 2:00am Sunday.
Mr. Herald was a good citizen, a man of sterling worth, stict integrity and jovial kind disposition who had made a large circle of friends that were greatly shocked at the news of his sudden demise. The esteem in which he was held and the sympathy of sorrowing friends was evidenced by the mass of flowers which literally banked the room in where his body lay before their last sad journey to their final resting place. The funeral was held rom St. Joseph's Church at 9 o'clock Monday morning. Rev. Father Becker, Caron, and Schwartzmeyer officiating at solemn high mass and the following friends acted as pallbearers; Peter Donlevy, A.M. Martineau, P.T. Meuwsen, M.P. Belleu, Mike Flanigan, Martin O'Donnell. Out of town relatives and friends who were present were; Mr. and Mrs. Will Robinson and daughters, Elizabeth and Anna, Green Bay, George Kelly, Agnes Herald, Miss Julia Kennedy, Green Bay. Ed Reynolds, Frank Reynolds, Will Reynolds, Crystal Falls, Michigan, J.E. Nelligan, Marinette, Dr. and Mrs. George Melchooir and daughter Camille, Michael, Algoma.
