Sgt. Hammond Is
Prisoner of Nazis

OCONTO FALLS, Wis - Chief of Police and Mrs. Hammond, Oconto Falls, who received word from the War Department that their son, Staff Sgt. Wayne W. Hammond of the Army Air corps had been missing in action over Austria since July 26, have now received word through the Red Cross that he is a prisoner of war in Germany. The last letter he wrote to his parents was dated July 24.
Sgt Hammond was stationed in northern Italy and was on missions over Balkan countries. He went overseas in February and a few months later his plane was badly damaged and he was hospitalized for a time with pneumonia. The young sergeant left with the March contingent in 1942, took basic training in Miami Fla., and attended gunnery school at Buckley field and Lowery field in Colorado. He then took further training at Timball field and Drew field, Florida, as a waist gunner. He received his wings in September 1943 and was home on furlough in February. He has received the Oak Leaf cluster and Presidential citation.
