Sgt. M. Peterson Killed in Action Special in Press-Gazette OCONTO
FALLS, Wis - Mrs. Hazel Peterson, Oconto Falls, has received a message
from the War department that her son, Sgt. Marvin Peterson, was killed
in action July 27 somewhere in New Guinea. The last letter received
from him was dated July 17 when he was up for a rest period.
Sgt. Peterson left for service with Company C. Oconto National Guard unit in October 1940. He took his basic training at Camp Grant, Ill. Then he was a corporal he was awarded the Distinguished Service cross for heroism in New Guinea in January 1943. He was part of a group advancing along the coast on Jan. 12 when they came to the swift, perilous Konombi river. Armed with pistols and grenades and wearing only shorts, Peterson and three others swam the river in daylight and fastened a rope which enabled a platoon to cross and established a bridgehead. Peterson later developed fever and was sent to Australia. He was discharged from the hospital, but received a broken jaw while playing baseball, and had a relapse of fever, and was in the hospital until June 1, 1943. He recently was awarded the Purple Heart. Sgt. Peterson was born in Oconto Falls may 8, 1921, the son of the late Magnus Peterson and Mrs. Hazel Peterson, and graduated form the Oconto Falls High School with the class of 1939. Survivors besides his mother include three sisters, Sadie of Sturgeon Bay, Fern of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mary Jean, at home, and five brothers, Miles, seaman 2/c in the Navy at Norman, Okla.; Gerald, Green Bay, and William, Robert and Lester, at home.
