State WAAC Arrives
With Group in Africa

Allied Headquarters, North Africa -(AP) Auxiliary Marceline Emond, Lena (Oconto County) Wis., is among 71 additional members of the women's army auxiliary corps recently landed in north Africa.
The second detachment of WAACS to arrive in this theater, they will expand the company working as secretaries, typists, chauffeurs and bilingual switchboard operators at Gen. Eisenhower's headquarters.

OCONTO, Wis., May 21 - Her French nationality and ability to talk French gave Marceline Emond, Oconto young women, a quick trip from Wisconsin to North Africa via the Waacs.
Miss Emond was born at Lena, Oconto county, but lived in Oconto a number of years prior to joining up with the Waacs. She was one of 71 Waacs members recently landed in North Africa and her French had made her a bilingual switchboard operator in the headquarters of Gen. Eisenhower, speaking both French and English on the wires.

EMOND, MARCELINE M. "CHICK," 91, of Inverness, died Monday (May 12, 2003) at the Citrus Health Center of Inverness. Born in Spruce, Wis., she came to Florida in 1973 from Milwaukee. She was employed as a floor lady for Universal Foods of Milwaukee.
    She was a Women's Army Corps veteran in French North Africa and Italy during World War II.
    She donated 1,000 volunteer hours at Avante at Inverness Nursing Home. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4337 and Our Lady of Fatima Parish.
    Survivors include her nieces and nephews; and a caregiver, Rayburn Joyner. Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home With Crematory, Inverness.
