OCONTO, Wis. - Glenn D.
Garvey graduated
from Two Rivers Washington High School in Wisconsin, 1943 and enlisted
in the Army
Air Corps
where he served as a B-29 Superfortress Flight Engineer during World
War II. Glenn had qualified and taken pilot training, but due to the
large number that qualified and the need for vital in-flight support
personnel,
many of the men were reassigned as flight engineers.
Due to the complexity of the controls for this new Boeing 29 model, the flight engineers were necessary to relieve the pilots of the distractions of monitoring, adjusting and recording data from all the engine gages, instruments and non direct-flight equipment controls. Flight Engineers had their own separate panel in the cockpit and pilot training at these controls was essential for the overall stability of the flights. Other on-board flight personnel were radar, communications, gunners and bombardiers. Section III - The Brothers'
Story in World War II
Marianna Marauders "We arrived at Cochran Field, Basic Flying School (Macon, Georgia) on June 28, 1944.....We even picked up a few guys who blended right in. I remember one guy named Glenn Garvey who was from Two Rivers, Wisconsin. A very nice guy who as I recall remained with us until we were discharged. He was a bit of a character but fit right in." |
