Sgt. David Bartelt
Wounded on D-Day

GILLETT, Wis - Mr. and Mrs. George Bartelt, Gillett, have received word from the War department that their son, Sgt. David, was wounded in the D-day invasion and is now in a hospital in England. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal which has been received by his parents.
Sgt. Bartlet entered service in February 1943, and was sent to camp Butner, N.C., where he received his training in the branch of Engineers in the Second army. He also attended school at Fort Belvoir, Va., for special training. Last January he was sent over seas and had been stationed somewhere in England until the invasion.
He is a graduate of the Gillett High school and worked one year in Salem, Ore., before returning to enlist in the service.

Obituary

David Lee Bartelt, 89, Green Bay, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013. David was born June 20, 1923, to George and Loretta Anne (Johnson) Bartelt in Gillett.

David was a Purple Heart veteran of WWII having served with the Army Corps of Engineers, and was wounded at Omaha Beach in 1944.

On October 27, 1945, David married Norma Jabes. They lived mainly in the West Allis area, where David was an accountant for the City of West Allis for 24 years, retiring in 1984. After retiring, they moved to Arkansas where they had family and friends. Norma preceded him in death in 2001. On July 23, 2005, David married Pearl Rekitzke at Hope Lutheran Church in Cecil. In January, 2009, they purchased a home in Green Bay. David was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 11, and Disabled American Veterans from Shawano.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pearl; two brothers, Lon (Carole) Bartelt, Pulaski; Gary (Doris) Bartelt, Hondo, TX; one sister, Yolande Schleicher, Green Bay; stepdaughter, Cheryl (Wayne) Schick; stepson, Michael (Cathy) Rekitzke; three step-grandsons; four step-great-grandchildren; and many loving, caring nieces and nephews. David shared a special bond with his niece, Karen Bartelt.

David was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Norma Bartelt.

Friends may call at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 210 S. Oneida St., from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013. The Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. A memorial fund has been established to benefit Redeemer Lutheran Church.

David’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Grancare Nursing Center and Dr. Warren for their loving care of David and his family.
