Gasper Moyers - Rev War Soldier

He moved to Rockingham VA from Frederick about 1791 when he purchased land on Linville Creek. In letter of 1904 from Isaac Myers he said Rudolph when he moved to Augusta Co in 1840 left 3 brothers Jacob, Henry and David living in Rockingham Co. and they spelled their name Moyers.

BIRTH: Estimated, 1810 census says he was 45+ so he was born before 1765.

CENSUS: 1810 Rockingham Co, VA Moyers, Casper County: Rockingham State: Virginia Year: 1810 Roll: M252_67 Page: 137 Image: 181. Casper Moyers 12211-00201-0-0 (males 1-under 10, 2 10-16y, 2 16-26y, 1 26-45y, 1 45+; females 2 16-26y, 1 45+, no slaves)

MARRIAGE: not found but about 1781 and likely in Frederick County where they both lived.

DEATH: between April 1814 (signed deed) and Oct 1814 (Inventory of his estate WB 11 p 406).

ESTATE: Oct 25 1818 in Augusta Co, VA $1,187.28.

ORPHAN BONDS: Daniel Fall appointed guardian with Alexander Crawford, surety for Rudolph and Daniel Moyers, orphans of Gasper Moyers. (ca Jan 22, 1816). David Griffith appointed guardian with George Hanger, surety for David and Levi H. Moyers, orphans of Gasper Moyers. (ca Jan 23, 1815).



SOLDIER: American Revolution, private Casper Myers #39169771 sol. inf. Capt. Sheppard Co. of Frederick Co, VA was paid on Oct 24 1783 at £ 53-15-10. In West Virginians in the Revolution, is listed Casper Myers private in Capt. Shepherd's Co of Riflemen. [Supplemental for his service was submitted and approved in the Sons of the American Revolution for Christos Christou, Jr. #130571 on Sep 29, 1999].

TAX: Per the Tenth Legion Tithables in Rockingham Co, Gasper Moyers was listed in Military District #6 in Capt. Jacob Lincoln's Company part of Linville Dist. in 1792 with no male children listed over 16.

He is named in the will of Thomas Bryan dated Jan. 23, 1793 Rockingham Co, VA. "I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Peter Bryan the one half of a bond upon Gasper Moyers now in my possession...to my well beloved son Wm Bryan a little place upon the Northwest end of Gasper Moyers place said Gasper Moyers having made to him one hundred and fifty acres of the place he now lives on in the first place and the remainder to be disposed of as above and likewise a little place containing 50 acres."

DEED: In 1791 Casper Myers Jr. and wife Ann sell West Run property to John Conrad Deboe Wit. *Dennis Bush [Casper and Anna immediately buy property on Linville Creek in Rockingham Co, VA] (Frederick Co Deed Book #22 p 440)

DEED: In 1791 Gasper Myers purchased 150 acres of land on Linville Creek from Peter Bryan. [Rockingham Co deeds burnt in Civil War only remnants survive.] (Rockingham County Burnt Deed Book #00 p. 89)

DEED: Casper Myers of Rockingham mortgages 150 acres to Michael Trout and John Kring part of land bought of Thomas Bryan on Dec 22 1794 along the waters of Linville Creek. The land was mortgaged to John King Sr. [Per other deeds remnants DB #00, 555 and DB OOO p. 25, the mortgage was paid in 1802.] (Rockingham County Burnt Deed Book #00 pp. 381)

DEED: Gasper Moyers and his wife Anna sold 120 acres of his 150 acres tract on Linville to Jacob Moyers (son) for $5000 part of land bought of Peter Bryan in or about 1791. (Rockingham Co Deed Book #2 p. 226)

DEED: On Oct 2, 1797 Gasper Moyers and Anne his wife of Rockingham Co sell 22 ½ acres on the north side of West run to Elizabeth Hammock from land patented from Gov. Beverly Randolph Esq. on Nov. 10 1789. (Stephens City Frederick Co, VA DB 3 p. 215) [This 1797 Deed from Frederick Co, VA shows Gasper Moyers and wife Ann of Rockingham Co, VA is the same as Gasper Moyers Jr of Frederick] (Stephens City Frederick Co, VA Deed Book 3 p. 215)

DEED: On May 9, 1818 lists heirs. "Mrs. Moyers, widow and relict of Casper Moyers deceased, Jacob Moyers & Catherine his wife of Rockingham Co, John Moyers & Christianna his wife of the state of Indiana, Casper Moyers & Rachel his wife, Henry Moyers & Margaret his wife of Rockingham, Abraham Moyers, Ann Moyers, Barbara Moyers, and David Moyers of Augusta Co and Rudy Moyers and Daniel Moyers of the county of Rockingham sold 1/5 part of a survey for 81 acres of a certain tract to Henry Hotspillar land situate in Augusta Co. The deed mentions earlier agreement dated April 2 1814 between Casper Moyers and Henry Hotspillar that was not fulfilled due to Gasper’s death. (Augusta Co VA Deed Book 42 p 354)

DEED: On Sep. 8, 1819, Daniel Moyers sold to Gasper Moyers 1/11 part of land of father Gasper Moyers. (Augusta Co VA Deed Book 44 p 85)

DEED: On Aug 30 1820, Jacob Mowyer and Catherine his wife, Henry Moyers and Margaret his wife, all of Rockingham Co legatees of Gasper Moyer sell land. (Augusta Co Deed Book 45 p. 312)

DEED: In 1822, Abraham Moyers and Mary his wife, John Keller and Ann (formerly Ann Moyers) his wife, John Smith & Barbara his wife, Rudolph Moyers, and David Moyers heirs of Gasper Moyers, sold 5/11 part interest in a tract of land formerly belonging to Gasper Moyers deceased containing about 325 acres being the residue of a tract purchased by Gasper Moyers of a certain William Bell. (Augusta Co Deed Book 46 p 234)

NOTES: Apparently another Casper Myers died in prison February 16 1777. Rev. War Land Office Military Cert. (VA Archives) for Casper Myers, Private, file #6506-07 for 50 acres, Joseph Watson, Assignee. His heir was Stephen Myers who applied and received land. "Virginia Revolutionary War Records" The first is merely a recitation of the names, ID # , acreage and assignee. The second one reads as follows: 6506-7: Myers, Casper (Stephen, heir-at-law) Private 3 years.
