Bounty and Donation Land Grants in Trinity County

The Republic and the State of Texas both issued land grants as additional compensation for those who served Texas in the military.  The government of Texas, for the most of the 19th century, had very little cash with which to pay soldiers, so our most abundant resource-land- was used to supplement the meager military pay.

For descriptions of Land Grants in Texas visit the Texas General Land Office website:

http://www.glo.texas.gov/what-we-do/history-and-archives/_documents/categories-of-land-grants.pdf

To search for a particular Abstract use this link on the Texas General Land Office site:

http://www.glo.texas.gov/history/archives/land-grants/index.cfm  (Select Trinity County from county list, then insert the Abstract No.)

I compiled a list of Military Bounty and Donation Grants that are shown for Trinity County and included some brief notes that could be found in the documents.  If you find a particular person of interest, I suggest you go to the Search link above, select Trinity County and insert the Abstract No. and it will show you the documents for that abstract/person.  My list just highlights some of the materials found, some documents are very hard to read, so be sure to double check!  One thing to remember is that in 1830's Trinity County did not exist, so often the county was named as Houston County as Trinity County didn't become a separate county until 1850.  The surveys do include lands that are now a part of Trinity County.
