Clarkson
Cemetery Clarkson, Milam County, Texas Transcribed & submitted by Clarissa Vogelsang-Loyd This cemetery was originally surveyed by Clarissa Vogelsang-Loyd on December 27, 2006. Updated 16 May 2012 by Clarissa Loyd. Clarkson Cemetery is located off FM 1444 in Milam County. To visit the Clarkson Cemetery from Cameron, travel North on Hwy. 77 until Ben Arnold (about 6 miles North of Cameron). In Ben Arnold on the right is an old service station that is now a bar, immediately after this building turn Right on FM 1444. Follow FM 1444 all the way to the Clarkson Cemetery which will be located on the Left side of the road. Across from the cemetery and Clarkson Baptist Church is a white frame house. There isn't much on this road as far as landmarks, with the exception of a few houses but mostly it is farm land and green pastures. From the Junction of Hwy. 77 and FM 1444, the cemetery is roughly 8 to 10 miles. Beside the Clarkson Cemetery is the Clarkson Baptist Church. This church is no longer used but still stands. Inside the walls, ceiling and floors are all white. The old pews inside are white as well. The pulpit is surrounded by three windows with a pretty new looking podium. Permission was granted by Mr. Juergen to go inside the Clarkson Baptist Church on December 27, 2006; he is the caretaker of the cemetery. There has been damage to the stones either by weather or vandalism. Some of the stones that had pictures on them have been removed and many stones are broken in half and sunken into the ground. As of 16 May 2012, there is one huge stone flipped over between Edwin Schulz and Hermann & Marie Schulz and most likely by the blackland soil moving around since there is visiable signs of sinkage. It appears to have been uprooted at the base of the stone since it is still entact, but the actual headstone has been tipped forward. No other stones have been disturbed. Two additional graves have been added to the cemetery since 2006 (Mr. & Mrs. George A. Dodd) and they are listed below. There are 106 individuals in the Clarkson Cemetery. The oldest gravestone is of Susan E. Loving who died Mar 12 1896. There are three tombstones that have death dates of 1896, one is unreadable, Charlie Chumley and the other is of Walter E. Loving who died Mar 28 1896. Photos forthcoming. This transcription is listed in the Milam County TXGenWeb Archive, click here for record. |
