Bryant Station
Cemetery Buckholts, Milam County, Texas History by Clarissa Loyd & Transcription by Jesse Little Bryant Station is located outside of Buckholts on CR 106. Now, CR 106 is North of the River, but once you cross over the bridge South, it turns into CR 406 and loops around and will take you to the town of Val Verde. From Buckholts, take FM 1915 and then turn Right on CR 104, passing Cornith Cemetery and then turning Left on CR 106. Bryant Station Cemetery will be on the left and the drive will meander around and will be on the right hand side after the second curve. This is a public cemetery, even though it may seem like you are on private property. Private property does surround the area, but the actual cemetery and drive way are open to the public to visit the cemetery. This listing is an alphabetical list, but the one in the Milam County TXGenWeb Archive is listed as they were recorded with a map of the plots, which is also transcribed by Jesse Little. To view the map and plot listing, click here for it. There are 91 known stones in Bryant Station Cemetery and the oldest stone is of O.D. who died in 1873; but there are numerous unmarked graves that have been there longer, but no documentation exists. There are many unknown graves and the actual oldest grave is unknown since records of the burials were not recorded. This cemetery is somewhat active and only those from the Bryant Station community and/or kinfolk are occassionally buried at this cemetery. A Bryant Station Cemetery Assoication was founded about 3 years ago in 2009 since one did not exist prior and is headed by Mr. Kinder Chambers, but the actual preservation of the cemetery and upkeep are handled by those that live in the community and those that have loved ones at Bryant Station Cemetery. This transcription is listed in the Milam County TXGenWeb Archive, click here for original transcription. Photos forthcoming by Clarissa Loyd. History of Bryant Station Cemetery Compiled & submitted by Clarissa Loyd The
actual history of Bryant Station Cemetery is not really known and the
oldest gravestone is unknown since the original tombstones were made
from river rock. River rock is brittle and erodes over time (more
quickly than other minerals), so
in the very back of the cemetery near the Oak trees, there are a number
of unknown graves without tombstones. It is said by Mr. Kinder
Chambers and Mr. Michael Allison, that near the Oak trees is an Indian
burial ground, but there is no conformation since there is no
documentation. It is also said that at least one black slave
is buried in this area, too, but the tombstone is not facing the grave,
but is turned around facing away because he is black and not white and
blacks were not allowed to be buried with white's at the time of his
death. It is said by Mr. Chambers, that the young black man was
most likely good friends with one of the white families and they let
him be buried in Bryant Station because they thought highly of him and
his family. Mr. Chambers did say that someone found an old
tombstone from the back and brought it toward the middle of the
cemetery and it was of Susana Bryant who died
about 1856 (could be earlier than 1856) and she was a young child who
most likely died from typhoid, dysntery, or the flu. He also said
that there was a tombstone at one time of someone who was born in the
late 1700s, but that tombstone no longer exists since it was made of
river rock. Mr. Allison
said there are a number of children buried at Bryant Station and died
during the flu epidemic during the early 1900s. Bryant Station was an old outpost in Milam County and Mr. Allison said that after Bryant Station, it was known as "no mans land" and that one was "on their own" if they ventured too far because the Texas Rangers were not established during this time. Mr. Chambers said that the Bryant's in the area are not buried in Bryant Station Cemetery, but were exhumed and interred at the National Cemetery in Austin in the 1931. Maj. Benjamin Franklin Bryant and his wife, Roxana Price Bryant, were buried in their "flower garden" behind their house and later interred to the National Cemetery in Texas. Former Texas Governor Pat N. Neff, gave a tribute speech to the Texas House of Representatives & Senate in 1931 on the momentous occassion when Bryant and his wife were interred. Please also see Texas Senate Resolution No. 445 & Texas House Resolution No. 510, both celebrating him as a "true Texas hero". Both resolutions were adopted on Maj. Benjamin Franklin Bryant's 201st birthday, celebrating his heroism and leadership with the Indians in Milam County. History compiled by Clarissa Loyd, 16 May 2012.
