Joan Fay “Joanie” Walker

Joan Fay “Joanie” Walker, age 68, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021. Joan Fay and her brother, John Ray, the first twins born in the Ganado Hospital, made their debut on September 9, 1952 to John and Bernece Jetton Karl.

Joanie grew up on the Navidad River as part of a large family who lived partly off the land. They hunted in, and out, of season for survival more than sport. She was truly a country girl that liked her glamour too; and, she wore the glamour well.

She worked at Cornerstone Properties, U.S. Postal Service, McCoys and Bluebonnet Electric Coop in Bastrop. Joanie held a special place in her heart for her church--At The Cross Fellowship.

Two souls were joined in Heavenly bliss when God joined Joan and Richard "Bo" Walker together on August 11, 1990. The Walker’s home has always been a place of welcoming love and laughter. Joan loved her children, Shelly and Kelly. Her absolute pride and joy were her grandchildren. Some might say that they were spoiled by their ‘Gamma’ and ‘PaBo’ with love, trips across the United States and the many wonderful times spent together building family memories-more than enough for a lifetime.

Joanie is survived by her husband, Bo Walker; her children Shelly Lowery Brown (Alton) and Kelly Lowery (Kimberley); her brilliant and beautiful grandchildren who take after their grandmother, Jared Lowery, KarlyAnne Lowery, Kolten Lowery, Kyndal Lowery and Aidan Brown; sisters, Jean Shores (Dale) and Peggy Karl Davis; brother, Tony Karl (Debbie); mother-in-law, Patricia Walker; sisters-in-law, Linda Rozner Karl, Gloria Parrott, Amy Meyers and Kelley Tinsley (Bill) along with too many adored nieces, nephews and cousin to name.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jerry Karl and John Karl.

Visitation was held on August 26 at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home. Joanie always envisioned a huge story-telling celebration by loved ones from all over on her treasured family land. However, due to safety concerns of the pandemic, Joanie amended her wishes to a private graveside service at the Karl Family Cemetery in Hope.

Pallbearers were Jason Davis, Brandon Karl, Matthew Karl, Marcus Karl, Wesley Davis, Nathan Davis, Mason Karl and Jordan Griffith.

Memorial contributions may be given to At The Cross Fellowship, P.O. Box 628, Yoakum Texas, 77995.     On-line guest book may be signed at www.thielecooper.com

Born on June 11, 1953, in Palacios, Texas, Linda June Stuhrenberg Wallis was the third of four children to the late Edwin and Helen Stuhrenberg. She was raised on the family farm in the Carancahua community and graduated in 1971 from Palacios High School. Linda attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and completed her Dental Hygiene degree in Houston at the University of Texas Medical Branch, graduating at the top of her class. In 1974, Linda married her high school sweetheart and moved to Baton Rouge. After a short time in Louisiana, they returned to Palacios where Linda worked as a dental hygienist and became actively involved in the community. In 1979, the next chapter of Linda and Craig’s life began with the birth of their son Kyle and two years later daughter Courtney on Valentine’s Day. During this time, they took advantage of an opportunity to invest in the shrimping industry and Craig honored Linda by naming one of their first boats “Linda June.” In the years that followed, Linda’s role as a wife and mother became the center of her life and she retired after 18 years in dental hygiene to focus on her role at home. Linda continued to serve the Palacios community as an active member and later an honorary member of the Harmonie Club, a member of the Alapha Club, a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and an adult leader and lifelong supporter of the 4-H Program. Linda seized every opportunity to connect both family and friends by coordinating trips to snow ski, water ski, scuba dive or simply lounge by the beach. Her adventurous spirit only grew stronger as she became “Mimi” to her four grandchildren. Linda is survived by her husband of 44 years Craig Alan Wallis of Palacios; son Kyle Maxwell Wallis and wife Andrea of El Campo; daughter Courtney Leigh Wallis Kenner and husband Jeff of Fulshear; grandchildren Riley and Abby Wallis and Whittney and Brooks Kenner; brothers W.A. (Bill) Stuhrenberg and wife Gerry and Marvin Stuhrenberg and wife Joan; sister Teresa Adams and husband Jim.

Linda was proud of her contributions towards the establishment of the “Leafs for Life” Program in support of the Palacios Community Medical Center. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to the Palacios Community Medical Center, 311 Green, Palacios, TX 77465. For more information, call 361-972-2511 or visit www.palacioshospital.net. In addition, Linda enjoyed supporting Saint Philip the Apostle Catholic School in El Campo where two of her grandchildren attend and would like to also provide the option to offer donations to the SPS Endowment Fund in Linda’s memory. Donations may be mailed to 302 W. Church Street, El Campo, TX 77437. For more information, call 979-543-2901 or visit www.stphilipschool.org.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Annie Lopez, Cathy Green, Shirley Quintero, and Kathy Maloney for putting their own lives aside to care for Linda during the times she needed them the most. Your care, patience and friendship is an inspiration to all of us.

Benjamin Franklin Ward
The Ward Killing

The killing of Ben F. Ward on Carancahua was rumored here last week, but we were unable to get any particulars, and have so far failed to learn anything substantial. The following we clip from the Jackson County Progress, which gives the best account of the killing:

“The only particulars obtainable at this time is that three brothers, named Manis, have been living on Mr. Ward’s place for some time, and that Mrs. Ward and the wife of one of the three brothers became involved in a dispute and after some words had passed, the latter struck the former in the face. As soon as Ward was advised of the trouble he went to the home of the Manis brothers with…to investigate matters and after going there the three brothers wrenched the gun from his possession, when Jim Manis shot Ward through the breast, and made an attempt to shoot Mrs. Ward, but by some means was prevented through the interference of a little boy or girl. On Monday morning Jim Manis was seen to pass through Edna riding a dun horse with a Winchester rifle tied to his saddle, traveling at a rapid gate in the direction of Morales. Mr. Ward leaves a noble wife and several children to grieve over his unfortunate and unexpected fate. The following description is given of Jim Manis, the murderer: About six ft…inches tall, dark complexion, eyesight defective, large nose, slightly turned up at the end, about twenty-five years old, had a day’s growth of beard and dark moustache and rode off on a yellow dun horse with stripes down the…Sheriff McDowell offers a reward…Manis in any jail in Texas.”

July 13, 1933 – October 1, 2021

Lewis Whiddon Watson, Jr. was born July 13, 1933 to Lewis Watson and Frankie Stapleton Watson in Cordele, TX. Having graduated Edna High School, Lewis enlisted in the Army, serving two years at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. After his Honorable Discharge, Lewis enrolled in Texas A & I at Kingsville, where he earned his Bachelors of Business Administration degree in 1957. During his enrollment there, he married his High School sweetheart and the love of his life, Shirley Lochausen.

After graduation, Lewis and Shirley moved to Victoria, TX, where Lewis began his lifelong career as a Banker with 1st Victoria National Bank. After three years of faithful service, Lewis accepted a position as the Vice President with the First State Bank of Uvalde, in Uvalde, TX, eventually joining Uvalde Bank, becoming the President and serving as the Chairman of the Board. With a servant’s heart and being very civic minded, Lewis served on various boards throughout his 20+ years in Uvalde, including President of the Board of Trustees for Uvalde ISD.

Continuing his calling to serve, Lewis and Shirley moved to Edna in 1987 where he pursued a second career in Real Estate. With a focus in Ranch lands, Lewis succeeded in this path for 20 years, eventually leading he and Shirley to Missouri City, TX, in 2015 where they lived out his remaining years with their daughter. For the 28 years they lived in Edna, Lewis and Shirley were faithful parishioners of Saint Agnes Catholic Church, where they attended Mass, and remained active members, every Sunday.

Throughout his life, Lewis loved the outdoors. He spent many years as an avid hunter and golfer, but his greatest joy and source of pride was his family. Friday, October 1, 2021, The Lord called Lewis home, where he was welcomed with a glass of Scotch and a cigar by his beloved friends and family.

Lewis is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley, his two children, Lu Anne Jaegli and husband Glenn of Missouri City, TX, and Brian Watson and wife Doxie of Midland, TX. Lovingly known as their “Dado”, he is also survived by his 6 Grandchildren, William Jaegli and wife Patricia of Humble, TX, Amelia Wynn and husband John of Cypress, TX, Amanda Foshee and husband Matthew of Cypress, TX, Lewis Whiddon Watson, III “Tres” and wife Ashley of Midland, TX, Ansley Kolb and husband Jase of Midland, TX, Dutton Watson and wife Morgan of Midland, TX, Honorary Granddaughter, Danielle Smith “Gigs” of Easton, CT, and 7 Great Grandchildren, Reed and Jake Jaegli, Lincoln Foshee, Ryder and Anna Claire Watson, and Brady and Allison Jo Kolb.

Shirley Ann Watson

August 20, 1934 - July 29, 2023

Shirley Ann Watson, was born August 20, 1934, to Herman Otto and Beulah Lochausen in Edna, TX. Shirley is preceded in death by the love of her life, Lewis Whiddon Watson, Jr “The Rude Little Fat Boy”, to whom she was married for 67 blessed years. She is survived by her daughter, Lu Anne Jaegli and husband Glenn “Jack Ass” of Missouri City, TX, and Brian Watson and wife Doxie of Midland, TX. Lovingly known as their “Mimi”, she is also survived by her 6 Grandchildren, William Jaegli and wife Patricia of Huffman, TX, Amelia Wynn and husband John of Cypress, TX, Amanda Foshee and husband Matthew of Cypress, TX, Lewis Whiddon Watson, III “Tres” and wife Ashley of Midland, TX, Ansley Kolb and husband Jase of Midland, TX, Dutton Watson and wife Morgan of Decatur, TX,  Honorary Granddaughter, Danielle Smith “Gigs” of Easton, CT, and 7 Great Grandchildren, Reed and Jake Jaegli, Lincoln Foshee, Ryder and Anna Claire Watson, Brady and Allie Jo Kolb, and Waylon Watson.

Humble beginnings found Shirley responsible for harvesting coupons, to be exchanged for rations, during World War II, to provide her family with basic necessities. Fastidious traditions continued to shape her, and her family’s resolve, finding them in California, by way of train, traveled often and solely by Shirley, at the age of 7. Attending primary school, while her mother worked in the Airplane factory, Shirley, like many others during that time, continued her early education, and contributed to the life sustaining practices of her family.

As it tends to do, the changing times brought her family back to Texas, where Shirley graduated from High School in Edna, during the early 1950’s. Immediately following, Shirley attended Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX, eventually transferring to The University of Texas, in Austin.

Shirley married her greatest love, September 5th, 1955 in Edna, creating the foundations of life, until moving to Kingsville, where Lewis completed his education. Shortly following, Lewis and Shirley moved to Victoria, TX, for a brief stint, eventually finding them in Uvalde, TX for the next 20+ years. As their love grew, and as life progressed, Shirley and her love, returned to her beginnings, and moved back to Edna, TX in 1987, in pursuit of post-retirement careers, for the next 28 years. The remaining years of life found Shirley, with her love, surrounded by her family in Missouri City, TX, until she could be reunited with Lewis, and in the open arms of our Lord, July 29, 2023.

Aside from her family, Shirley found the greatest joys in providing home cooked meals to her family and friends, as well as neighbors in the advanced years of life, and the ailed alike. Shirley loved people, and always remembered names, always accompanied with big warm hugs. In her own words “friends were a gift from God.” Some of her most valued friendships consisted of various lifelong relations, too numerous to mention. Plainly stated, Shirley had many loves, and was loved by many.

A creature of habit, or many in her contexts, during her Golden Years, Shirley could be found with her 10 o’clock Rosé and Fox News, afternoon Westerns, and the self-profundities of her 5 o’clock somewhere Jack Daniels. Never a moment passed, where her family was not blessed with Shirley’s love of Christ, jovial spirit, and playfully witty retort. Shirley will be deeply missed, but her lessons live on.
A Rosary will take place at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, 506 N Allen St, Edna, TX 77957, Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 10:00 AM, with a Funeral Mass following at 10:30 AM.

Pallbearers will be Shirley’s Grandsons: Tres, Will, Dutton, Jase, John, and Matthew.
Honorary Pallbearers: Howard and Loraine Ponish, Estelle and Tom DuBose, Gus Westhoff, and Fred Westhoff.

In lieu of flowers, and upon Shirley’s requests, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children.

In honor of Shirley, for those of you feeling her loss, and experiencing sadness from her passing, her family leaves you with her most uttered phases, and sincerest sentiments: “Oh Hush. I have flown the coop.”

Kenneth Neil Williams

June 16, 1935 - November 27, 2022

Kenneth Neil Williams was born on June 16, 1935, in Hope, Texas. He passed away peacefully on November 27, 2022.

Raised in Hope, Texas, Ken spent his childhood as a typical shoeless country boy, covered in mud, and jumping from hay lofts with a feed sack as a parachute.

Ken earned his bachelor’s degree from Rice University in 1958. Known as the “Hope Flash,” Ken scored the only touchdown in the 1958 Cotton Bowl against Navy.

Ken met and married the love of his life Beverly Williams and spent forty-nine amazing years raising five loving children and creating a lifetime of memories. They both shared a love of adventure, and spent many years traveling the country, eventually making it to all fifty states. The stories they shared of their shenanigans were both outrageous and outlandishly hilarious.

During the late 60’s to early 70’s, Ken and his band Arnold Parker and the Mustangs could be found playing their music in the dance halls of South Texas. They also opened for some of the up-and-coming big names of the era. For decades after, Ken would entertain family and friends with his amazing talent, with many of the songs he wrote himself. His love of music and his legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren.

Moving to Edna in the early 1970’s, Ken became an independent insurance agent for the next thirty years. During this time, he was an active member of the Rotary Club, where he also served as President at one point. During these years, Ken and Beverly could always be found supporting their children in various sports, as well as teaching them the joys of hunting and fishing.

Joining the Presbyterian Church in 1974, Ken loved his church and was installed and ordained as an Elder in 1985. His church family was very dear to him, and he enjoyed Sunday lunches with his ladies he nicknamed “Ken’s hens.”

Ken will always be remembered as an amazing husband and father, leader in his community, and an active outdoorsman.

Ken is preceded in death by his wife Beverly, his parents Olan and Edith Williams, and his brother Norman Williams. He is survived by his brother Donnie Williams (Jean), and sister Linda Wakefield (Lynn), and children Scott Williams (Cherry), Steve Austin (Kristin), Kevin Williams (Mary), Jeff Williams, and Jennifer Kirkpatrick (Craig); eleven grandchildren; Taylor Abney, Brittany Patino, Jade Bryniarski, Stephanie Williams, Cassidy Williams, Brandi Gayle, Jeffrey Green, Sophie Williams, Emma Wiegand, Neil Wiegand, Brooke Kirkpatrick, and Taylor Kirkpatrick; five great-grandchildren; Kylie Green, Landon Green, Wyatt Gayle, McKenzie Gayle, Elias Gayle, Campbell Hucheson, Kate Patino and Quinn Hucheson as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Services will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at Edna Presbyterian Church in Edna, Texas. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the Funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna, Texas.

Elizabeth "Betty" (Hasdorff) Woodring

February 28, 1932 ~ February 1, 2022

Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Woodring passed away peacefully on February 2, 2022 at the age of 89,  She was born in San Antonio, Texas on February 28, 1932 to the late Frederick and Marian Hasdorff.

She is preceded in death by sons Charles Patrick Woodring, Mike Woodring (Margaret), Gary Woodring (Lisa), and brother, Frederick "Rick" Hasdorff.  She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Kenneth F. Woodring and her children David (Janice) Woodring, Jeff (Lois) Woodring, and Nancy (Gary) Carrier.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Eric Woodring, Natalie Farley, Lauren Massey, Greg Wesley, and Blake Woodring, Kristina Smith, Jessie Seiler, Beth Lee, Kim Carrier, James and Megan Woodring, step grandchildren, Mark and Kevin Shoemake, and her sister Marian "Peggy" Kelley.  In addition, she leaves behind a wonderful legacy of 20 great-grandchildren.

On April 19, 1951, Betty and her husband Kenneth started their married life with a move to Amarillo, Texas where he served in the U. S. Air Force.  After a short time, the family moved to Edna with their first child, Mike.  While living there, they welcomed a second child, Charles Patrick, who died shortly after birth, and a third child, David was born.  When her husband, Kenneth was hired by Union Carbide in 1954, they moved to Victoria where the births of three more children, Jeff, Nancy, and Gary soon followed.  In 1963, after a few city years, they moved from Victoria back to the country living in Edna where they spent the next 44 years.  Betty was a faithful and lifelong Catholic and attended St. Agnes Catholic Church.  She taught CCD classes, was a member of the Catholic Daughters, and volunteered her services for other parish needs.  She also spent several years donating her time and energies to Helping Hands.  In 1975, she and Kenneth spent two years in Czechoslovakia for a Union Carbide startup project, and then in 1981, with the initiation of another startup, they lived in Argentina for a year.  Betty very much enjoyed these times overseas where she experienced living in other cultures and making many lasting friendships.

Health issues began to surface in 2007, and Betty and Kenneth moved back to Victoria.  For as long as she could, she actively supported her grandchildren in all kinds of endeavors while attending many academic, athletic, sports, theatre, and music events.  If she could manage it, she would be there.  She was a caring person filled with the spirit of generosity.  Her life as a homemaker took precedence over her own personal desires.  Betty passes on a true legacy of love, and her life is a testimony to it.

Betty was all about family and was the driving force behind numerous summers spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren in Rockport, Texas.  As she had many fond memories of summers spent there with her family while growing up, she wanted her children and grandchildren to experience the same, and they did.  Many stories of fun times during the "Rockport Years" are still told by her grandchildren.  The siblings and cousins spent a lot of days enjoying summer activities of fishing, boating, skiing and swimming.  These are treasured memories for all of them.  Holidays, too, were important to her, and she made them very special.  Not only was she a wonderful cook, but love abounded as all the growing group continued to meet and bond.  Betty always nurtured her greatly expanded family in every way possible.

Pallbearers will be Eric Woodring, Greg Woodring, Wesley Woodring, Blake Woodring, James Woodring and Kevin Shoemake.

A special thanks go to the dedicated caregivers who provided such loving care to Betty.  Their kindness and patience helped to soften the last few years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Helping Hands of Edna, Crown Hospice, Catholic Daughters of America, or donor's Choice.

Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St. Edna, TX 77957, 361-782-2152.

In 1963, the family moved back to Edna where they spent the next 44 years.  While working in the instrumentation department, Ken attended night classes at Victoria College and earned an associate degree.  After several promotions, he qualified for and was registered as a Control Systems Engineer.  In 1974, he was the Control Systems Engineering support for UCC Licensing, and he, Betty, and two youngest children moved to Czechoslovakia where they lived for 19 months.  Support for new startups continued after they moved home, and jobs in Argentina and Saudi Arabia followed.  Ken remained at UCC until he retired in 1993.

While in the Air Force, Ken was asked to head up entertainment on the base, and that began his love of music.  He held the title of Band Master, and at one time had a band named "Woody and the Woodpeckers".  Then he discovered barbershop music and was hooked.  Over the years, he sang with large barbershop choruses such as "The Toast of the Coast" and "Coastalaires". He also sang with groups of four known as "The Chordwringers" and "Four City Four".  Ken sang for over 60 years and never tired of singing or promoting barbershop music.  One of his quartets was known for hiring out to sing Valentine's songs as well as singing at local schools and nursing homes.  In addition, he and fellow members traveled to symposiums and competition in many states and were interviewed and sang on National TV in Mexico City.  In his final years of singing, he continued to perform as a member of "Tidelanders" in Houston.

Throughout the years, Ken was the "go to" person for the entire family.  His children and grandchildren respected him and his knowledge and sought advice many times.  He had a wide range of skills and was always ready to help in any way he could. Health issues began to surface in 2007, and Ken and Betty moved back to Victoria where they remained together until Betty passed away on February 2, 2022, after 70 years of marriage.

When Charlotte was young, the family relocated to the Caranachua Bay where she lived until graduating from Palacios High School in 1952. She attended one year of nursing school in Houston, Texas and then married and moved to Collegeport, Texas. Charlotte became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Collegeport and a life-long friendship began with her mother-in-law, Hazel Merck.

During the later 1960s, Charlotte and her family moved to Bay City and she began work at the Bay City ISD tax office. Charlotte seemed to be proficient in the area of accounting. She made dear friends, Bertha Broughton and Doris Shillingberg who seemed to take Charlotte and her family “under their wing.” Charlotte continued to work at the Bay City ISD tax office for approximately 16 years. Charlotte married Clyde Workman, retired, and they spent the next 30 years together.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lillian H. Simons (Mimmi) and father, Milam Gayle Simons (Papa); her brothers, Traylor Simons, Edwin L. Simons and Milam Gayle Simons Jr.; and her stepson, Rodney Clyde Workman.

Charlotte is survived by her husband, Clyde Workman; her children, Deborah Merck Dennard and spouse Dr. Crayden Dennard, John Milam Merck and spouse Jeanie A. Merck; step-daughter, Rhonda Crume and spouse Jesse Crume; and daughter-in-law, Nita Workman.

Charlotte was a devoted and loving grandmother who absolutely glowed whenever her grandchildren were mentioned. Charlotte and Clyde’s grandchildren are Jon Kelly Dennard and spouse Dr. Elizabeth Eliot Dennard, Mark Christopher Dennard, Matthew T. Merck and fiancé Samantha Richardson, Emilie Merck Nice and spouse Conner T. Nice, Jackson Merck, Kyle Holton, Ashley Maslak and spouse Jeff, Chris Holton, and Megan Sarclette and spouse Andrew.

Charlotte and Clyde had four great grandchildren. Charlotte knew she was expecting a great granddaughter at the end of September. We think she will be watching her much anticipated arrival and rejoicing, too.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Sandra Ford, Sarah Elizabeth, and the staff at Country Assisted Living for giving our loved one comfort, respect, and dignity. Thank you to Dr. Alan N. Byrd, who was always compassionate, professional, and available. Charlotte loved her supportive church family and was a long time member of The First Presbyterian Church in Bay City, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 22, 2016, at The First Presbyterian Church in Bay City, Texas.

Charlotte chose to be part of the University of Texas/ Houston Branch Medical Donor Foundation in hope of assisting others.

In leiu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, Country Assisted Living in Danevang, or Houston Hospice of El Campo, Texas.
