Callaway S. Vance
June 08, 1920 - February 13, 2014

EDNA—Callaway Sanford Vance, 93, died from complications of a brain tumor on Thursday, February 13, 2014. He was born on June 8, 1920 in Edna, Texas, to the late John T. Vance and Lillian Callaway Vance. He is survived by three daughters, Susan Williford and former husband John Williford of Houston, Becky Vance and her husband Cletus Lee of Houston, and Nancy Aimone and her husband Roy of Victoria; grandchildren Rebecca Kelly, Rachael Shannon, Robin Shannon, Chess Lee, Callaway Aimone and his wife Kelly, and John Aimone and his fiancé Ashley Welder; and great-grandchildren Nolan, Peyton and Calvin Kelly, all who affectionately knew him as “Gramps”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue B. Vance, his brother, John T. Vance II, and sisters Mildred Schade and Marie Zipp.

After growing up on his family’s backyard banks of Dry Creek and graduating from Edna High School, Callaway entered Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma honorary scholastic fraternity and Delta Theta Phi law fraternity. At the age of 21 he completed his law degree and passed his bar exam. During that time, Callaway cut in on a dancing couple at the UT Student Union Ballroom to claim his partner for life, his nurturing and compassionate wife Sue. With the advent of World War II he volunteered for the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School and was subsequently accepted into the Counter Intelligence Corps where he served until the end of the war. He then joined his father’s law practice in Edna and continued an active practice, alongside complementary business pursuits, into his eighties. He once stated, “Our office was like the general store in a small town—you could get most anything you needed at one place. In addition to our general law practice we operated an abstract plant, a title insurance company, a casualty insurance agency and also made personal loans on land and automobiles.”

Callaway was a member of the Edna Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and an elder. He was a member of the Texas State Bar Association and past president of the Jackson County Bar Association where serving as chairman of the committee approving attorneys for Victoria District Federal Court. As an active Rotarian for over 65 years he served as president, was honored as Rotarian of the Year, and received recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was elected for two terms to the Edna ISD Board of Trustees. In 1956 he was nominated a director of The Jackson County State Bank , holding that position for more than 30 years; upon its acquisition by Victoria Bankshares he was named a Community Director of Victoria Bank and Trust-Edna. He was a charter member and president of the Edna Country Club where he was a frequent golfer until the lure of his land intervened. In 1993 he was appointed by the Governor of Texas to the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority Board of Directors.

Appreciated for his wisdom and known for his frugality, quick wit and sense of humor, Callaway was the epitome of the old-fashioned country lawyer and gentleman. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and the pursuit of ranching and agricultural interests. He spent hours in his greenhouse making his yard a tropical paradise, and plants he nurtured continue to flourish in the yards of his children and grandchildren. Most of his life he began and ended each day improving and enjoying his country properties. In retirement nothing pleased him more than loading his dog in the truck, alongside his fishing pole and shotgun, and heading to the country to watch the sunrise and engage with the resident alligators. Until her death in 2004 his devoted wife of 62 years, Sue, lovingly accompanied him on his evening sunset trips. As there were seldom enough hours in the day to read his political, business and financial periodicals, communication with family members was frequently conducted from behind The Wall Street Journal.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Edna Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Kris Crawford officiating. Arrangements are with Oaklawn in Edna, 361-782-2221.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 East Locust, Victoria, Texas 77901 or Edna Presbyterian Church, 502 Apollo, Edna, Texas 77957.

She was also involved in her children’s school activities and 4-H. She served many years as an adult 4-H leader. When her husband purchased Jackson County Equipment Company, she assisted as his office manager.

When they both retired, they enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and going to the casinos in Lake Charles, LA. She spent her time cooking, baking homemade bread, quilting, embroidering, reading, and communicating with friends on the phone. Her family treasures her quilts and embroidered pillowcases. During the last four years of her husband’s life, she cared for him tirelessly.

Wesly John Vincik

Wesly John Vincik, 37 of Austin Texas passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2020. He was born to John and Lisa Vincik of Edna, Texas on March 7, 1983. He is survived by his parents; the love of his life, Siiri Marquardt; one brother, Thomas Vincik and his wife Valerie; a nephew Reid Vincik; two nieces Avery and Leah Vincik and paternal grandmother, Pauline Vincik. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Euva Eager; paternal grandfather, Adolph Vincik; as well as his favorite uncle, Bradley Prukop known to Wes as Uncle BB. Wes grew up on the family farm where he spent most of his summers driving a tractor or grain truck during harvest. He graduated from Industrial High School in Vanderbilt, Texas in 2001. After high school, Wes set out to conquer the world, small town life just wasn’t for him! He attended The University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2005. While attending UT, he spent his summers working with YouthWorks Mission Trips, where he traveled to places such as Juarez Mexico, Honduras, West Virginia, and Washington DC just to name a few. As much as he loved working with YouthWorks, the summer mission trips had an added bonus of being away from the farm during summer harvest. His next adventure took him to Dallas, Texas where he attended Dallas Theological Seminary and graduated with a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling in 2008. He begrudgingly moved back to the farm after graduation. Not long after, he headed back to the place he loved and called home, Austin. He lived there happily until his untimely exit from this world. Wes’ work career started off at CARY: Counsel for At Risk Youth, a program that was implemented in middle schools for at risk youth in Austin Independent School District (AISD). From there he went to work for AISD running one of their afterschool programs for disadvantaged children. Leaving AISD he worked at Sun Power Solar and also dabbled in solar panel sales. In December 2018, Wes found his way to Software Advice where he found an amazing work family that loved sharing memes and work happy hours as much as he did. Wes worked there until the time of his death. When Wes conquered a problem, task or career goal, he always moved forward looking for his next challenge. In his spare time he enjoyed playing on adult basketball teams, kickball teams, biking, throwing axes and also ran a 10K. He visited and critiqued as many of Austin’s local bars and restaurants as he could. He thrived to Keep Austin Weird! He enjoyed beating everyone at Words with Friends and Song Pop. Ironically, his love for all music came from the dreaded summers he spent on the tractor for 14 hours a day with only a radio as company. In June of 2017, Wes found his forever partner and the love of his life, Siiri Marquardt! The two of them loved to travel together, they would point at a place on the map and say, let’s go! They visited Colombia, Belize and multiple US states. Siiri’s fur baby, Ollie and Wes became fast friends. So much so that Ollie was at Wes’ side until the very end. Siiri and Wes had recently added a new member to their family, Maisie, a four-legged ball of fur. The last 3 years of Wes’ life spent with Siiri and their fur-babies were the happiest years of his life. Even though Wes’ life was cut short, he lived more life in 37 years than most of us ever will. Wes will be greatly missed by everyone who’s life he has impacted but his memories will live on with us forever.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 9:00 AM until Noon at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. A private family service will be held. For your safety, CDC guidelines will be followed with social distancing and limitation of visitors in the chapel. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.rosewoodfuneralchapel.com.
