Inez Gailbraith Utzman
Mrs. Utzman Dies; Funeral Not Set

Mrs. W. A. Utzman, prominent Edna woman, died at 2 p. m. Wednesday in the Caney Valley Hospital at Wharton. She had been a resident of Edna about 30 years.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Her husband was in business here for many years prior to his death a few years ago.

A more extended mention of Mrs. Utzman’s death will appear next week.

Edna Weekly Herald, March 29, 1951

[The April 5th issue, is not available.]

Mr. W. A. Utzman Died Here Monday

Monday evening, October 24, at his home in Edna, Mr. W. A. Utzman, a prominent business man of this city passed away following several months of illness.

The funeral service was held at the Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock, and was conducted by his pastor Rev. John J. Marse. The remains were laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery.

The following were pallbearers: Messrs. Claudius Branch, Thad Rose, Otis Good, Virgil Miller, Oliver Parr and Louis Nagel.

Winfield A. Utzman was born at Waterloo, N. Y., March 20, 1872, hence was 77 years and 7 months of age. Before coming to Edna in 1912, he was engaged in the mercantile business in Toledo and Freemont, Ohio.

March 20, 1914, he was united in marriage to Miss Inez Galbraith of Toledo. Mr. and Mrs. Utzman came to Edna to make this their home.

When he first located in our midst, Mr. Utzman engaged in farming and stock raising but for the past fifteen or twenty years he had conducted an appliance and service station business on Main street on the location of the new Faires Drug Company building. In fact, he occupied this site so long it was spoken of as the “Utz Corner.” A few months ago he moved his appliance business to the Ezzell building on East Main street.

“Mr. Utz,” as a great host of friends called him, was a progressive and enterprising man. For many years he was active in Chamber of Commerce work and took a leading part in every movement that had for its purpose the improvement of our town and county. He personally financed several chamber of commerce projects that later proved a valuable asset to Edna. He was indeed a big hearted man; a man who was ever ready to lend a helping hand to a friend or the needy.

During the first World War he was county chairman of the Red Cross and served in this capacity for several years after the close of the war.

Mr. Utzman’s firm belief that there was oil in Jackson County led him to form a company for the purpose of drilling in the Edna area. And among Jackson County’s first wildcat wells was on the Calhoun-Lackey farm and was drilled by his company.

Mr. Utzman was reared an Episcopalian, but after coming to Edna he became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. He was a Knight Templar and a 33rd degree Mason and shriner.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Inez Utzman, and one brother, Mr. Franklin M. Utzman of San Angelo, California.

The Herald joins the many other friends of the family in extending sympathy.
