Aubrey Sanders Sr.

Edna—Aubrey Sanders Sr., 81, of Edna, died Saturday, March 21, 1998.

He was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Kilgore, Gregg County, to the late Elijah “E. J.” and Eva B. Jones Sanders. He attended public schools in Kilgore. He was retired and was owner of Sanders Trucking and Auto Service until 1997. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he was Sunday school treasurer, president of Brotherhood and was a Deacon.

Survivors: wife, Mary Sanders; daughters, Opal Jewell Houston of Houston and Terri Denice Wallace of Edna; sons, James Earl Sanders and Joe E. Wallace, both of Houston, Lonnie E. Wallace of Beaumont and Aubrey Sanders Jr., of Beeville; sister, Mildred Bryant of Compton, Calif.; brothers, Leroy Sanders and Emmitt Sanders, both of Houston and Clemma Sanders of Kilgore; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: brother, Benjamin Sanders; and one grandson.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p. m. today at McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home chapel.

Prayer service will be 7 p. m. today at the funeral home.

Services will be 2 p. m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Edna, the Rev. P. H. Griffin officiating.

Burial will be at Sayles Cemetery of Edna. McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home, Victoria, 573-4341.

Pallbearers: CJ Barnes, JB Butler, James Harris, Altone Robinson, Jordan Brooks and Hillary Edwards.

Mary Lott Sanders

Victoria—Mary Lott Sanders, born February 28, 1928 in Tivoli, Texas and resident of Victoria, Texas, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the age of 86. For many years Mrs. Sanders worked in the nursing and health care field.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sanders will be on Monday, March 17 at Noon, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Victoria, 808 S. Navarro in Victoria with visitation 11-Noon. Burial will take place in Sayles Cemetery in Edna. Tracy’s M. J. Santellana Funeral Directors-Victoria in charge of arrangements, 361-582-0858.

Louise Driver Killed – Oscar G. Santellana

Edna—Funeral services will be held in Edna Wednesday for Oscar G. Santellana, 21, of Louise, who was killed early Monday morning in a head-on collision on Highway 59 in Wharton County.

The Highway Patrol office in Wharton said Santellana was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace C. F. Drapela. Alberto Lucio of Rosenberg, a passenger in the victim’s pickup, later Monday was reported in satisfactory condition with minor injuries in Nightingale Hospital in El Campo. Fidenco Montalvo of El Campo, driver of the other car, was transferred from El Campo to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston and was reported in serious condition.

The accident occurred about 2:12 a. m. 4.1 miles east of Hillje. Montalvo reportedly was driving a 1969 two-door east-bound, and Santellana was driving the 1973 pickup west-bound. The wreck was investigated by Patrolman Dennis Korenek of El Campo, assisted by the El Campo Fire Department ambulance.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Tuesday in the Slavik Chapel in Edna with Bishop Hugo Gerbermann officiating. Services will then be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday from St. Agnes Catholic Church here with the Rev. Gerard Cernoch of El Campo officiating.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home of Edna.

Santellana was born Sept. 29, 1954 in Ganado, but had lived in Louise some nine years, where he graduated from high school and was in the FFA work. He later took vocational training in El Campo, and was employed by Buetell, Inc., there.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benito Santellana of Louise; and both grandfathers, Emelio Garza and Ray Santellana both of Edna.

Cornelius F. Sayles

Edna—Dr. Cornelius Felton Sayles, 71, of Edna, died Sunday in a Victoria hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Edna, to the late Cornelius and Jennie Fitzgerald Sayles.

Dr. Sayles received a bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University and doctor of philosophy degree from Syracuse University.

He served as principal of high schools in Freeport and Kingsville and of Danforth Elementary School in Syracuse, N. Y., a professor at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas, before returning to Edna about 10 years ago.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday of Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of the usual remembrances, contributions be made to The Kidney Foundation.

Pallbearers will be Warren Barnes, James D. Harris, Clifton McGrew, Jordan Brooks, Matthew Washington and Derek Webb.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Evening Sun Masonic Lodge No. 530.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Sayles of Edna; a son, Felton Cleveland Sayles of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and two grandchildren.

Cornelius L. Sayles

Edna—Funeral services for Cornelius L. Sayles, 84, long-time educator in South Texas and former principal of Carver high School here, will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Shiloh Baptist Church.

The Rev. R. A. Hicks will officiate at services, and burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery under direction of the Cook Funeral Home.

Known as Prof. Sayles by his friends and former students, he was the first of three generations of educators in his family. His wife, Mrs. Jennie Sayles,  taught in public Schools for over 40 years; his son, C. Felton Sayles is director of the teacher corps for city schools in Syracuse, N. Y., and also serves as an assistant professor at Syracuse University; and his grandson, Felton Sayles, is band director and supervisor of music in the city schools of Syracuse.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home from noon Friday to 9 a. m. Saturday, and in the church from 9 a. m. Saturday until time of services.

Pallbearers will be Walter H. Mac, Robert E. and Olen Young, Tom B. Sayles and Jordan Brooks. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Shiloh and Mt. Olive Baptist Churches and members of the Evening Sun Lodge Number 530.

Mr. Sayles, a native of Jackson County, had been principal of the Carver High School of Edna 17 years when he retired in 1956, and previously had been principal of Fred Douglas High School in Kingsville. He began his career as a teacher.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jennie Sayles; a son, C. Felton Sayles of Syracuse, N. Y. and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren

Jennie Sayles

Edna—Jennie A. Sayles, 99, of Edna, died Thursday in a local hospital following a long illness.

A native of Port Lavaca, she was born Oct. 31, 1887, to the late John and Lucy Dixon Fitzgerald. A schoolteacher, she had been employed in Kingsville and the Edna Independent School District before her retirement in 1956. A graduate of Prairie View A & M, she was a member of the Eastern Star and the Courts of Calanthe.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Monday at the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Roberts officiating.

Burial will follow the services in Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jordan Brooks, Matthew Washington, Tom B. Sayles, Atherton Fitzgerald and Walter and Robert Young.

Surviving are a son, Dr. C. F. Sayles of Edna, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Sayles

Edna—Mary Sayles, of Edna, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, at the age of 87. She was born February 15, 1926, in Boston, Georgia, to the late Herburt and Mamie Brooks Wilkerson.

Mary had a Masters in Education. She was a retired teacher who shaped many young minds throughout Georgia, New York and Texas for over 30 years. She was active in the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association. Mary was a member of Scruggs Methodist Church and worked at the Lake Texana Museum. She was also a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her daughter, Saundra Frommer and her husband William of Freeport, Long Island; Sister, Etta W. Beard of Syracuse New York; Step grandchildren, Felton Lloyd Sayles, Sonja Sayles Hines.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dr. Cornelius Felton Sayles; Stepson, Felton Cleveland Sayles.

A service will be held at Oakland Funeral Home in Edna, Texas, May 23, 2013 at 10:00 am with a burial to follow at Sayles Cemetery. Reverend Hayward Robinson will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edna Band Boosters at Edna High School, 1303 West Gayle Street, Edna, Texas 77957.

Mitchell Sayles

Vanderbilt—Funeral services for Mitchell Sayles, 78, of Vanderbilt will be held at 4 p. m. Sunday at the Cook-Butler Funeral Chapel in Edna, with the Rev. J. D. Brown officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Tom, Isaiah and Eldridge Sayles, Walter Young and Ollie Cook.

Mr. Sayles, a retired carpenter, was born in Jackson County, Sept. 17, 1900. He died Thursday at his home in Vanderbilt.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Perkins of San Antonio; three sons, Isaiah of Houston, Mitchell Jr. of San Antonio and Eldridge Lee Sayles of California; an dfour grandchildren.

Tom Bass Sayles

Edna--Tom Bass Sayles, 85, of Edna died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996.

He was born Oct. 11, 1911, in Edna to the late Matthew Sr. and Norma Bass Sayles. He was a retired farmer and member of Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Survivors: sisters, Laura Harris, Octavia Cook and Thyra Bowden, all of Edna; brother, Matthew Sayles Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.

Preceded in death by wife, Mildred Sayles.

Visitations will be 9 a. m. - 8 p. m. Thursday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Services will be 11 a. m. Friday at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Sandra Cranford officiating.

Ramon R. Serna

EDNA - Ramon R. Serna, of Edna, age 89, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013. He was born in Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, on August 1, 1924, to the late Pedro Serna, and Ramona Resendez Serna.

Ramon is survived by his sons, Oscar Serna of Edna, Humberto Serna and wife Gloria of Victoria, Raymond Serna Jr. of Edna, Gerardo Serna and wife Gloria of Edna ; daughter, Hortencia Rosalez and husband Ray of Ganado; three sisters; seventeen grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth Rodriguez Serna; daughter, Olga Hernandez; one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 28, 2013, from 9:00 am till 11:00 am with funeral services to follow, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Edna Latin American Cemetery. Pastor Juan Flores and Mary Garcia will be officiating.

Sam Sheppard

Edna—Sam Anthony Sheppard, 28, died Thursday in a Houston hospital following a long illness.

He was born June 5, 1958, in Ganado to Evelyn Sheppard of Edna and Lorenzo Williams of Richmond. He was employed as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday in Shiloh Baptist Church in Edna with the Rev. F. L. Fillmore officiating.

Burial will follow in Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

He is survived by his parents; five sisters, Laura Spencer, San Antonio; Shirley Barnes, Lorene Sheppard, and Lethia Sheppard all of Edna; Demetritc Sheppard, Corpus Christi; and two brothers, Ricky Sheppard and Dwight Sheppard, both of Edna.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Santee, Jerome Jackson, Leon Thomas, Johnny Johnson, Jesse Robinson, and Benny Gunter.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Sheppard, Michael Stovall, A. C. Stovall, Alvin Stovall, Harold Stovall and Curtis Gunter.

Leon Singleton

Edna--Funeral services for Leon Singleton, 94, of Edna, who died Monday in a local hospital, will be held at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday in the Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel here with the Rev. T. L. Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cornelius Parlor, Roy Lee Ramey, Lincoln Edwards, Cornelius Caesar, Willard Franklin and Viron Reed.

Mr. Singleton was born in Jackson County on Jan. 12, 1888, and was a retired laborer. He was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving is a brother, Roscoe Singleton of Wharton.

Mrs. Selena Singleton

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Selena Singleton, 89, of Edna will be held at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday from the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery under direction of Cook Funeral Home. Members of the American Woodmen will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Singleton was a native of Jackson County, born near Edna on Oct. 10, 1885, the daughter of the late Major and Julia Powell. She died Saturday in a local hospital.

Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Eleanor Dean of Edna and Mrs. Lenora Paradosi of Brooklyn, N. Y., and several cousins.

Mrs. Mary Bell Smith

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Bell Smith, 70, formerly of Edna will be held at 2 p. m. Monday from the Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under direction of Cook Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Thomas Dean, Arthur Washington, Hohn G. Grant, Willie Goulden, Herbert Powell and William Mitchell.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Jackson County. She died Friday in a rest home in Victoria after a lingering illness.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Corrine Williams and Mrs. Estelle Gardner, both of Edna, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy A. Sodia

Ganado—Dorothy Allen Sodia, 84, of Ganado, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002.

She was born Nov. 6, 1918, in Ganado, to the late James and Virginia Young Allen. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: daughter, Joyce Wells of Houston; son, Julious Matthew Sodia of Victoria; sisters, Linda Fields, Esther Lee Edwards and Rena McGriffith, all of Ganado; brothers, Joe Bradley Allen of Bay City and George Allen of Edna; and seven grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Matthew Sodia; parents, and brother, “Little Jim” Allen.

Visitation will be 1-8 p. m. tonight at Tracy’s M. J. Santellana Funeral Directors, 1402 W. Main in Edna.

Services will be 1 p. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, the Rev. P. H. Griffin officiating.

Morris Steen

Edna—Morris Steen, 56, of Galveston, a former Edna resident, died Sunday in a Galveston hospital.

Mr. Steen was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Ganado.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday in Cook-Butler Funeral Chapel here, with the Rev. T. L. Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery near Edna, under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Mr. Steen is survived by his mother, Mrs. Julia Franklin of Edna; and a sister, Mrs. Norma Lee Collins of Houston.

Mrs. Allonia Stovall

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Allonia Stovall, 74, of Edna will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery near Edna under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Service. Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Mrs. Stovall was a native of Jackson County, born here Dec. 21, 1903. She died Monday in a hospital, apparently from head injuries suffered in a fall in her apartment in Edna.

Alvin Stovall

Alvin Stovall, of Edna, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the age of 90.  He was born June 29, 1923, in Louise to the late George and Allonia Grant Stovall.

Alvin was a rice farmer for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his long time companion, Verna Lee Butler; daughters, Shirley Beasley and her husband Nesby of San Antonio, Sherrie Brown and her husband Samuel of Houston; and son, Oneal Stovall and his wife Mary of Houston.

Alvin is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruby Mae Turner Stovall.

A visitation will be held at Oakland Funeral Home in Edna, Friday, July 26 from 5-7p.m. A funeral service will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church on Saturday, July 27 at 10 a.m. with a burial to follow at Sayles Cemetery. Pastor Wendell Stovall will be officiating.

Bobby-Joe Stovall

Edna—Bobby-Joe Stovall entered into eternal rest on June 11, 2013. He was born August 26, 1957 in Edna to Pauline Stovall and Raymond Lefridge. He was a rice farmer.

He is survived by five sisters; Ruth, Brenda, Leola, Esther, and Theresa.

Visitation 10-11 a. m. with funeral service at 11 a. m. on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Scruggs Methodist Church, 313 Carver St., Edna. Burial at Sayles Cemetery, Edna.

Cathryn Stovall

Edna—Cathryn Stovall, 84, of Edna, passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008. She was born July 30, 1924, in Edna, to the late Helen Crockett and James Whitmore. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Tabernacle Christian Center.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Stovall Jr. of Edna; son, Thomas Stovall III of Greenville; sisters, Jean Miller of Houston; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Ida Linda Grays; sisters, Tommie Lee Beeler and Delores Dennis; and brother, Gerald Dennis.

Visitation will be from 9 a. m. to 8 p. m. Friday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, with Elder Thomas Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Sayles Cemetery.

George Stovall Jr.

Ganado—George Stovall Jr., 78, of Ganado died Tuesday in a Beeville Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday in the Prosperity Baptist Church at Ganado with the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery near Edna, under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and granddaughters as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Stovall was born Jan. 5, 1903, in Jackson County. He was a retired ranch hand.

Surviving are seven daughters, Enola Gunter, Mildred Stovall, Minni Hughes, Pauline Jackson, all of Corpus Christi; Clayette Hunter of San Antonio, Ira B. (Rita) Minor of Midland and Evelyn Sheppard of Edna’ three sons, Alvin of Ganado, A. C. of Beeville and Harold of Corpus Christi; 52 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Ida Stovall

EDNA—Ida Stovall, 89, of Edna, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1992, at her residence.

The homemaker was born Aug. 6, 1903, in Edna, to the late Henry and Ida Barnes Butler. She was a member of Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Survivors: son, Thomas Lee Stovall Sr.; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Stovall.

Services: 1 p. m. Thursday, Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Howard Mims officiating.

Burial: Sayles Cemetery, Edna, Cook-Butler Funeral Home, 782-3821.

Ganado—Funeral services for Irvin “Tony” Stovall, 26, of Houston and formerly of Ganado have been set for 11 a. m. Saturday at the Prosperity Baptist Church in Ganado, with the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery near Edna under direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Floyd Hughes, Johnnie Johnson, O’Neal Stovall, Charles Robinson, Jimmy Johnson and Preston Barnes.

Mr. Stovall was born May 6, 1953, in Ganado. A spokesman for the family said his body was found Saturday afternoon near a building on Southmore Street in Houston and he had been shot several times in the back. The spokesman said Houston police had said they had found no witness to the shooting or motive for it.

Surviving are a sister, Freddie Mae Stovall of Houston, and four brothers, Sgt. Alvin Stovall at Fort Carson, Colo.; Jessie Robinson of Edna, Michael Stovall of Houston and Edwin Rah McGrue of Bay City.

Pauline Stovall

Edna—Pauline Stovall, 75, of Edna, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006.

She was born April 24, 1931, in Edna, to the late Vivian and Lillian Young Stovall. She was a homemaker and a member of Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Survivors: daughters, Esther Polk of Edna, Ruth Wilson of Round Rock, Leola Stovall of Fannin, Brenda Fearance of Hutto, and Theresa Stovall of Pflugerville; son, Bobbie Joe Stovall of Austin; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great –grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Raymond Lefridge.

Visitation will be 1-8 p. m. Monday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home Chapel.

Family visitation will be 7 – 8 p. m. Monday at the chapel.

Services will be 11 a. m Tuesday at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Maurice Washington officiating.

Burial will be at Sayles Cemetery. Cook-Butler Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-3821.

Peyton Stovall

Edna—Funeral services for Peyton Stovall, 77, of El Campo will be held at the Cook-Butler Chapel at 10 a. m. Thursday.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery near Edna under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Mr. Stovall was born in Edna on Dec. 10. 1901. He died Sunday in a hospital in El Campo after a short illness.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Rose Lee Goff of La Marque.

Ruby Mae Stovall

Ganado—Mrs. Ruby Mae Stovall, 58, of Ganado, a native of Jackson County, died Saturday in a Victoria hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at Prosperity Baptist Church with the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery in Edna under direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Stovall of Ganado; a son, Oueal Stovall of Houston; three daughters, Mrs. Sherrie Jewell Brown of Houston, Mrs. Shirley Beasley of San Antonio, and Carol Dilworth of Edna; two sisters, Mrs. Virgie Parson of El Campo, Mrs. Dorothy Brooks of Kokomo, Ind., 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Thomas Stovall

Thomas Stovall, 92, a long-time resident of Edna, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. He was born July 16, 1921 to the late Ida "Big Mama" and Herbert "Pap" Stovall.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Ida Linda Grays.

Visitation was held from 10 - 11 a.m. with a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 5 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 604 Martin Luther King, Edna. Burial followed at Sayles Cemetery.

Sugera Family

Edna—Joint funeral services for the five members of the Sugera family of Houston killed near Edna Saturday in a car-truck collision will be held here at 9 a. m. Tuesday from St. Agnes Catholic Church under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home.

Victims of the accident were Jose Sugera, 24; his wife Maria Imelda Rodriguez Sugers, 26; two of their children, Hector Rodriguez, 6, and Maria Sugera, age three weeks; and the father’s brother, Juan Sugera Jr., 22.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery with members of the local G. I. Forum serving as pallbearers.

Mr. and Mrs. Jose Sugera are survived by two other children, a daughter, Fatima and a son, Luis. They were injured in the same accident but are recovering in the local hospital.

Jose and Juan also are survived by their father, Juan Sugera Sr. of Monterrey, Mexico and one sister in Mexico. Mrs. Sugera also is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rafael Rodriguez of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and four sisters and four brothers in Mexico.
