For the next 62 years Ann was by his side as they moved across Texas and California with their growing family. Ann was the mother of nine children — she considered that her greatest accomplishment and was proud of her wife and mother role.

Ann was a Christian woman, loving her God and was a member of the Church of Christ. Active in her children’s lives as a Sunday school teacher, Brownie scout leader, room mother, Ann also shared a love for the written word whether reading or writing down thoughts and ideas. For 10 years, Ann proudly wrote a column “Lolita — La Ward News” that was published weekly in the Edna Herald newspaper.

Thomas Alvin Pitchford, Sr.

Victoria--Thomas Alvin Pitchford, Sr. of Victoria, Texas passed away at home after a short illness Sunday morning, September 30, 2012.

Born at home August 21, 1925 in the Fox Community of Parker County to Alvin Pitchford and Lota Bell Waters Pitchford, he moved with his family in the early years to California where he started school in LaHarbra. The family moved back to Texas a couple years later and Tom attended Brock school, graduating in 1943 in a class of 9 students. One of his joys in later years was having his oldest grandson move to the Brock community and his great-grandsons become Brock Eagles.

He was drafted out of high school for World War II into the US Coast Guard which was a part of the US Navy during war times. After finishing basic training in St. Augustine, FL he was aboard ship in the Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterranean on guard for German submarines. During his time in the Coast Guard he also performed horseback shore patrols along the Virginia-North Carolina border.

After finishing his service duty, Tom graduated in 1948 from Weatherford Jr. College and attended Texas Tech. He married Ann Elizabeth Stewart on January 22, 1950 at her parents' home in Weatherford, Texas. They left for College Station where he attended Texas A&M graduating in 1952 with a degree in Ag Education.

In 1952 he went to work for Swift & Company and excelled in a career of sales and management. Tom was hired into Swift by Ralph Cole who remained his lifelong friend and mentor. His sales career took him to South Texas, California and back to Texas. In 1970, the family moved from the Rio Grande Valley to the Gulf Coast of Texas and called the area home, living in either Victoria or nearby Lolita. After his career with Swift, Tom had the opportunity to work as Ranch Manager for the Bauer Ranch fulfilling a lifetime dream.

Tom was a faithful Christian man and lifetime member of the Church of Christ and a daily bible reader. His greatest friendships and bonds through the years were always with people with whom he attended church each week. For many years Tom and Ann attended the Downtown church of Christ in Victoria and in Point Comfort where he was an elder at both congregations. Most recently he was a member of the Midtown Church of Christ in Victoria. He had a love and incredible knowledge of plants and gardening. Whether beautiful roses or a sack of home grown okra, he loved to share things he grew. Horses were a passion with him from the time he was a small child on a farm with "Old Bill" and in later years he enjoyed horseback riding and showing with his children.

A tall man, Tom was an impressive sight in his boots and hat, always ducking to enter a doorway. He loved to read and enjoyed anything about history or from his favorite western storyteller author.

Tom and Ann were happily married for 62 years until her passing in January of this year.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob and infant brother Jimmy, infant grandson Justin Ray Pitchford, son-in-law Jim Johnson and his beloved wife Ann.

Caroline “Sissie” Wehring Pitzer

Caroline “Sissie” Wehring Pitzer, 84, recently of Austin, died March 27, 2019. Alzheimer’s disease took her from us much too soon.  She was born in Three Rivers, Texas to Lurline and Ernest Wehring with older brother, Ernest (Sonnie) Wehring, Jr.

Caroline graduated from Refugio High School in 1952.  She then attended the University of Texas. She married Robert Ray Pitzer in 1954 and moved to Edna, where their daughter, Lisa Gaye Pitzer was born in 1955. Caroline and Robert were active members of the United Methodist Church in Edna.

Caroline’s career began after Lisa was in school. She worked in the Jackson County Clerk’s office, then in the County Auditor’s office.  She became the Assistant Auditor and was later appointed Jackson County Auditor where she served until her retirement.

She indulged her love of travel especially after retirement. Some of Caroline’s favorite trips were to London and Paris. After visiting the artist Claude Monet’s home outside Paris, she was inspired to paint several rooms in her home a beautiful sunflower yellow that matched the colors found in Monet’s home. Her dramatic sense of decorating style was well known to her friends and family. That carried over to her chic personal style of dressing. Caroline loved her many pairs of stylish shoes!

Time spent with friends and family, either travelling or relaxing on her backyard patio, was precious to Caroline. I believe that all of the problems of the world were at least discussed, if not solved on that patio. She always loved and appreciated her wonderful friends in Edna.

She was married to Robert for 35 years until his death in 1989. Caroline (Sissie) was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Ernest (Sonnie) Wehring.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Carlson, her husband, Bruce Carlson, and grandsons Benton Carlson and Brian Carlson, his wife Taylor Cone. She is also survived by many dear relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Edna.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to First United Methodist Church Edna, Alzheimer’s research (Bright Focus Foundation) or charity of your choice.

Accidents Kill Three Persons

Lolita—Three Lolita area residents were killed in two separate Jackson County highway accidents early Sunday morning.

Thomas Houston Plummer Jr., 15, an Industrial High sophomore and John Frank Mader, 19, an employee of Whitco at Point Comfort, were pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car accident north of Edna; and James Bryan Newman, 27, of Lolita, employee of Brown and Root Co., was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-car accident of Farm Road 616.

Six others involved in the two-car wreck near Edna were hospitalized with injuries, four reported in fair to critical condition late Sunday in Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria. These four and the condition reports included Greg Brooks, 16, of Edna, critical; Terry Miller, 16 of Edna, stable; Frances Rosales, 18, of Ganado, fair; and Charles Bravanec, 21, of Lolita, fair. Officers said they were passengers in a car driven by John Herreth, 16, of Lolita, who was in the Edna Hospital listed in satisfactory condition. Also, Dwayne Bedford Meador, 27, Edna and driver of the other vehicle was treated for minor injuries at the Edna Hospital and later released.

In the one-car fatal accident a passenger, Terry Newman, 14, of Lolita was listed in satisfactory condition in DeTar Hospital in Victoria.

The three fatalities raised the 1979 highway death total in Jackson County from five to eight.

State Trooper J. J. Ballesteros of Edna said the two-fatality accident happened at 1:23 a. m. about .2 of a mile north of Edna on State Highway 111. He said the two-door model driven by Herreth was northbound, and in attempting to turn left into a private drive was in collision with a southbound two-door driven by Meador. State Trooper Carl Garver of Port Lavaca, assisted by Troopers Jackie Meredith and Mike Roberts investigated the one-car accident on Farm Road 616, which took place while the Edna troopers were at the scene of the first fatal accident near Edna.

The officers said the accident occurred about 1:30 a. m. on Farm Road 616 about .2 of a mile west of Farm Market Road 1593 intersection. They said the victim, Newman, was driving east on 616 when the car ran off the road and hit a culvert.
