A. E. Padon

Ganado—Funeral services for August E. Padon, 84, of Ganado, who died Friday at a local nursing home, will begin at 3 p. m. Sunday at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. The Rev. Elmer Beck and Rev. Russell Moon will officiate.

Burial will be in the Flournoy Cemetery near Morales.

Mr. Padon was a member of the Texas Cattleman’s Association, a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau.

He married Clara Lee Budd on Aug. 31, 1936, in Beeville.

Pallbearers will be John Spencer, Larry Hobson, Douglas Budd, and Raney, Michael and Vernon Goldman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Shefcik, Clyde Gerald, Nowell Clark, Leo Kubecka, Gilbert Sattler and Frank Goldman.

Clara L. B. Padon

Ganado—Clara Lee Budd Padon, 92, of Ganado, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002.

She was born April 18, 1909, in Cordele, to the late William and Rovella Cooper Budd. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors: son, Lamar Padon of Edna; sister, Wilma M. Hobson of Edna; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, August Padon, and parents.

Graveside services will be 3 p. m. Sunday at Flournoy Cemetery, the Rev. Sue Huntsman officiating. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2152.

Accident Victim’s Services Set – Domingo A. Paiz

Edna—Services for Domingo A. Paiz, 30, of Edna, victim of an industrial accident near Mount Bellview Sunday afternoon, have been set for 2 p. m. Wednesday in St. Agnes Catholic Church here.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p. m. Tuesday in the Slavik Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be Wednesday in the Edna Latin American Cemetery.

Mr. Paiz was a swamper, employed with Beach Inc. of Bay City. A spokesman for the family said he was injured when a rig was being moved near Mount Belvieu Sunday. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Baytown hospital. Details of the accident were not available.

He was born April 4, 1951, at Orange Grove and came to Jackson County seven years ago. He was a member of the Edna Knights of Columbus, St. Agnes Church and St. Agnes Monday Night Prayer Group.

He is survived by his mother, Christina Paiz of Orange Grove; his wife, Angie; a daughter, Felicia; a son, Dominga Jr., all of Edna; three sisters, San Juanita Medrano of Alice and Julia Ortiz and Jesusita Paiz, both of Orange Grove; and five brothers, Martin of Alice, Canuto of Beeville, Ramon of Mathis and Erasmo and Librado of Orange Grove.

Pallbearers will be Ray Soto, Emanjel Hernandez, Robert Garza, Robert Vasquez, Victor Cruz and Ruben Flores.

Rosie L. Patterson

Edna—Rosie L. Patterson, 77, of Edna, passed away Friday, May 21, 2010. She was born March 16, 1933, in Edna, to the late Alma Duncan and Dewey Jordan. She was a retired homemaker and substitute teacher, and she was a member of Scruggs United Methodist Church

She is survived by her son, F. W. “Ricky” Patterson Jr. of Magnolia; sister, Lena LeFridge of Corpus Christi; brothers, Hollis Jordan of Edna and Willie James Jordan of Houston; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Frederick Patterson.

Visitation will be 1-8 p. m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at Cook-Butler Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 1 p. m. Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rufus Diggs officiating. Interment will follow at Sayles Cemetery.

Henry E. Pecha

Henry Pecha, 80, of Markham, Texas, formerly of Ganado, Texas was called to be with the Lord Saturday, December 1, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Henry is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Shari Vega and husband Kelly; son, Robert; step-daughters, Debi Edwards and husband Robert, and Dawn Fletcher; grandchildren, Anthony Gerdes and Jeremy Gerdes; great-grandchildren, Cole Khriztian and Aftyn; sisters, Irene Herreth and Evelyn Bures; and brother, Sydney Pecha.

Henry has been preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Lydia Pecha; wife, Bernice; son, James; and sister, Lillian.

There was a visitation on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ganado Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Ganado Funeral Home, followed by interment at Assumption Catholic Cemetery.

Landon A. Peeples

Vanderbilt—Landon Allen Peeples, infant son of Lance and Robin Peeples of Vanderbilt, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003.

Landon Allen was born Dec. 12, 2003, in Victoria. He was a Baptist.

Survivors: sister, Taylor Peeples of Vanderbilt; brothers, Gage Peeples and Kayden Alexander Peeples, both of Vanderbilt; and grandparents, Johnny and Iris Peeples, and Keith and Vonnette Tims.

Services will be 3 p. m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Lolita, the Rev. Mitch Thrower officiating.

Alberto S. Pena

Edna—Alberto S. Pena, of Edna, passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at the age of 82. He was born on April 23, 1927, in Vanderbilt, to the late Miguel and Guadalupe Suniga Pena.

Alberto was a long time member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna and the Knights of Columbus. He served in the Army and toured in Okinawa. He was A Boy Scout master, and he retired from Alcoa after 33 years of service.

Alberto is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eva Castro Pena of Edna; daughters, Estella Castrillo (Marcelino) of Houston, and Esther Smithwick (Jessie) of Edna; son, Miguel “Mike” C. Pena (Cynthia) of Goliad; sisters, Odelia Martinez of Angleton, Beatrice Martinez of Sweetwater, and Doris Sebedera of Edna; brothers, Manuel Pena of Clute and Joe Pena of Austin. He is also survived by his nephew, who he raised as his own son, Adrian Castro of Edna; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Alberto was preceded in death by his parents; grandparent, Simon and Chipita Benavides Pena; step-grandfather, Antonio Quinones; infant daughter, Esther Pena; sister, Hortencia Garcia; brothers, Simon Pena, Ricardo Pena, Estrogio Pena, and Amador Pena; and nephew, Frank Espinosa, who he also helped raise.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p. m. at the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna. Burial will follow in the Edna Latin American Cemetery with military honors. The Rev. Michael Petering will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jesse Smithwick Jr., Jacob Smithwick, Toby Castillo, Tony Castillo, Troy Pena, and Eric Pena. Honorary pallbearers are Stephen Smithwick, Jason Smithwick, Patricia Smithwick, and Adrian Castro.

Rites Held Today For Small Girl – Ester Pena

Ester Pena, 2-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pena of Edna was to be buried this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the residence in Edna. The child died Wednesday in a Galveston hospital. Burial was to be in the Edna Cemetery with Rendon and Sons Funeral Home of Victoria in charge of arrangements.

The parents are the only survivors.

Man Claimed by Injuries After Edna Auto Mishap - Eustorgio Pena

Edna—Eustorgio Pena, 47, of Edna, died in a Ganado hospital Friday night from injuries received when he was struck by a car on East Main Street.

Pena, an oilfield laborer, who resided in the Mauritz Village, was struck by a car driven west on Main by Willie C. Green of Houston, City Police Officer Paul Kelton said.

Kelton said Pena was carried 56 feet on the hood of the vehicle. The accident occurred 8:10 p. m. and Pena was pronounced dead at 9:40 p. m. from a fractured skull.

It was the first traffic fatality of the year in the city limits. Last year’s only death came on Feb. 13.

Pena’s body was taken to Jackson County Funeral Home where funeral arrangements were pending. He was born Nov. 22, 1923, in LaSalle.

Eva Castro Pena

Eva Castro Pena, 85, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016. She was born on May 14, 1930 in Goliad to Encarnacion and Anastasia Castro. Eva was a long time member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna and a member of the Catholic Daughters of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She worked as a life-long seamstress. Eva was a lovely lady with a beautiful soul.   Eva is survived by daughters Estella Castillo and husband Marcelino of Houston, Esther Smithwick and husband Jessie of Edna; son Miguel (Mike) Pena and wife Cynthia of Goliad; nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; brothers Encarnacion "Chon" Castro, and Guadalupe Castro; a nephew she helped raise Adrian Castro and wife Trish of Victoria; many nieces, nephews, other family members and good friends.  

Eva is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Alberto S. Pena; an infant daughter Esther Pena; parents Encarnacion and Anastasia Fuentes Castro; brothers, Jesus Fuentes, Consa Castro, Manuel Castro, and Adan Castro; sisters, Santos Fernandez, Salome Castro, and Albesa Castro; and nephew she helped raise, Frank Espinoza.  

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 3 at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Funeral service will be Monday, April 4 at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Michael Petering officiating. Interment will follow at the Edna Latin American Cemetery.  

Pallbearers are Jesse Smithwick Jr, Jacob Smithwick, Toby Castillo, Tony Castillo, Troy Pena, and Eric Pena 

Honorary pallbearers are Stephen Smithwick, Jason Smithwick, Patricia Smithwick, and Adrian Castro.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Catholic Daughters of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Mrs. Guadalupe S. Pena

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Guadalupe S. Pena, 67, of Edna will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. William Halata officiating. A rosary will be recited at 7:45 p. m. Friday at the Slavik Chapel.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery, under direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pena was born April 17, 1904 in Corpus Christi but had lived in this county 45 years. She died Thursday morning in a Ganado hospital.

Surviving are her husband, Miguel Pena of Edna, four daughters, Mrs. Dan Savedra of Edna, Mrs. Felepe Garcia of Lubbock, Mrs. John Martinez of Sweetwater and Mrs. Pete Martinez of Clute; six sons, Simon, Alberto and Amando of Edna, Richard of Houston, Joe of Lubbock and Manuel of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Isabelle Sanchez of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Urbana Pulido of Mexico; a brother, Severiano Suniga of Edna; 51 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Juanita S. Pena

Edna—Juanita Santellana Pena, 64, of Edna, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 in Victoria. Ms. Pena was born May 1, 1950, in Edna, to Cirilio and Rafaela Santellana.

She lived in Edna all of her life and attended Edna schools.

A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a. m with a funeral Mass beginning at 10 a. m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 506 N. Allen St., in Edna.

Miguel Pena

Edna—Funeral services for Miguel Pena, 78, of Edna will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joe Hybner officiating.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home. A rosary was recited at the Slavik Chapel Tuesday evening. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Pena was born Nov. 8, 1900 at Seguin. He died Monday in a Lake Jackson Nursing Home.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Felipe Garcia of Lubbock, Mrs. Beatrice Martinez of Sweetwater, Mrs. Odelia Martinez of Angleton and Mrs. Aurora Sabedra of Edna; six sons, Simon, Albert and Amador, all of Edna, Richard of Anahuac, Joe of Lubbock and Manuel of Clute, and by 55 grandchildren.

Edna—Simon Pena, 82, of Edna, died Friday, June 10, 2005.

He was born Oct. 28, 1922 in Austwell, to the late Miguel and Guadalupe Suniga Pena. He was retired from Alcoa and a Catholic.

Survivors: wife, Edna Santos; daughters, Mary M. Estrello of Pasadena, Delores Salazar and Velma Ante, both of Pearland, Agnes Ballin, Debra K. Pena, and Marlo D. Parker, all of Edna; son, Oscar Pena of Edna; sisters, Odelia Martinez of Angleton, Beatrice Martinez of Sweetwater, Hortencia Garcia of Lubbock and Doris Sebedera of Edna; brothers, Alberto Pena of Edna, Joe Pena of Dale, and Manuel Pena of Clute; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: Brothers, Ricardo Pena, Eustorgia Pena, and Amadore Pena.

Estefana Perez

Edna—Estefana Perez, 79, of Edna, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998.

She was born March 23, 1919, in Goliad to the late Augustine and Placida Tzaquirre Gutierrez. She was a homemaker and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors: daughters, Gloria Garcia of Garland, Alice Figirova of Edna, Margaret Garza of El Campo, Mary Jane Galvan of Blessing and Rosa Garza of Cuero; sons, Lupe Perez of Richmond, Albert Perez and Augustine Perez, both of El Campo and Pablo Perez of Bay City; sister, Juanita Flores of Goliad; brother, Martin Gutierrez of Houston; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Epifanio Perez; sisters, Adelida Gonzales and Antonio Pardo; brothers, Edwardo Gutierrez, Benino Gutierrez, Manuel Gutierrez, Leonardo Gutierrez and Jose Gutierrez.

Geronimo Perez

Edna—Geronimo Perez, 83, of Edna, died Sunday, April 24, 1994.

He was born Sept. 10, 1910, in Devine to the late Carlos and Lusiana Guajardo Perez. He worked for the street and sanitation departments for the city of Victoria. Mr. Perez was a Catholic.

Survivors: sister, Pascuala Anguiano of Victoria; and brother, Pablo Pulido of Victoria.

Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Leonarda Ramirez; and brothers, Panfilo Perez, Anselomo Perez and Argino Perez.

Rosary: 7 p. m. today, Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Maria Lopez de Perez

Maria Lopez de Perez, of Edna, passed away on November 20, 2018, at the age of 68. She was born on August 15, 1950 to the late Jose Maria Lopez and Maria de Jesus Leyva Lopez.

Maria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be missed dearly.

Maria is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Felipe Perez Sr; sons and wives, Felipe Perez Jr. and Maria Guadalupe Perez, Thomas and Herania Perez, Javier and Alma Perez, Christopher and Nicole Perez, Jose Maria and Rhea Perez, David and Maurixaa Lopez; grandchildren, Uriel and Felipe III,  Michael and Uriel Perez, Javier Jr, Damien and Vanessa Perez, Zaita Perez, Lilliana Perez, Lillian and Leilah Perez; sisters and brother in laws, Maria and Manual Aguilar, Maria Emma Hisquierdo; brothers, Jose Lus Lopez, Jorge Lopez, David Lopez, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 26, from 5-6:30 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m., with the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, November 27, in the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna. Burial will follow in Edna Latin American Cemetery. Rev. Michael Petering will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be all of Maria’s loving sons.

Panfilo Perez

Edna—Penfilo Perez, 89, of Edna, died Sunday, March 14, 1993.

He was born April 2, 1903, in Devine to the late Carlos and Lusiana Guajardo Perez. Mr. Perez was a farm worker and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors: sister, Pasquala Anguiano of Victoria; and brothers, Geronimo Perez of Edna and Pablo Pulido of Victoria.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services: 2 p. m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, the Rev. Michel O’Shaughnessy officiating.

Elaine Josephine Grieve Petrash

Elaine Josephine Grieve Petrash, 85, of Sugarland passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 in Ganado, Texas.

She was born on Tuesday, July 11, 1933 in Praha, Texas to Emil Greive and Bertha Vyviala Greive.

Elaine is survived by her extended family, brother and sister-in-law Allen and JoAnn Petrash, nephews, Mike, Pat and Kevin Petrash, Gary Greive, Jimmy and Raymond Frieda, and her niece Melanie Petrash, also numerous grand nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bennie F. Petrash, brother Edwin Greive, and sister Isabella Frieda.

There was a service on Monday, August 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Rosary and followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Praha, Texas with Father Ty officiating and interment to follow.

Roger Berl Poole

Edna--Roger Berl Poole, of Edna, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 at the age of 73. He was born in Wharton County on Sept. 17, 1936 to the late Berl and Lucille Joines Poole.

Roger is survived by his wife, Sandra Reeves Poole of Edna; sons, Roger "Lane" Poole of Burleson, Todd Reeves Poole of Edna, and David Berl Poole of Fort Worth; and grandchildren, Connor Poole, Madisyn Poole, and Jadyn Poole.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Gladys Poole.

Visitation will be 3 - 5 p. m. today, Feb. 28, 2010, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m., Monday, March 1, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Edna. Rev. Danny Reeves will be officiating.

El Campo—Funeral services for Elviria Porter, 86, of El Campo will be at 1 p. m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church in El Campo.

Burial will follow in Chase Cemetery in Edna under direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home. The Rev. R. R. Simons will officiate.

Mrs. Porter, who was born Jan. 28, 1900, died Friday at a local nursing home.

Survivors include a son, Julius Porter of El Campo; a daughter, Mrs. Theola Williams of Houston; two brothers, the Rev. Leonard Haynes of Los Angeles and Fred Haynes of Phoenix; two sisters, Beatrice Norman of San Antonio and Grace Haynes of Phoenix; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Haynes, Gilbert Haynes, Roger Vernon, Rodney Vernon, George Ray Norman and Robert Vernon, Jr.

Julius Porter

El Campo—Julius Porter, 75, of El Campo, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001.

Survivors: daughter, Charla Raye Williams of El Campo; sister, Theola Williams of Houston; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: son, Terry Wayne Porter; parents; and sister, Rose Alma Porter.

Services will be 11 a. m. today at Tracy’s M. J. Santellana Funeral Directors chapel in Edna, the Rev. Elder Jordan officiating.

Martha Ann Porter

Edna--Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Ann Porter, 90, will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Edna.

Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Brooks Jr., Owen Jones, Welder Brown, L. V. Brooks and Kenneth Brooks. Sr.

Mrs. Porter was a native of Jackson County, born here on March 22, 1887. She was a retired cook. She died Friday in a rest home in Corpus Christi.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. E. M. Weathers of Corpus Christi and a brother, Guy Jackson of Austin.

Aristeo Pulido

Edna—Aristeo Pulido, 65, of Midfield died Tuesday, March 1, 1994.

He was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Encinal to the late Panfilo and Ana Garza Pulido. He was a truck driver for Rosa Buentello Trucking Company. Mr. Pulido was a Catholic.

Survivors: wife, Angelina Gonzales Pulido; daughter, Juanita Guia of Midfield; son, Jimmy Valdez of El Campo; sisters, Concepcion Martinez of Edna, Dolores Escalante of Victoria and Beatrice Mendez of Dallas; and brother, Arnold Pulido of Edna.

Rosary: 7 p. m. today, Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral Mass: 10 a. m. Thursday, St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating.

Arnoldo Pulido Sr.

Edna—Arnoldo Pulido Sr., 72, of Edna died Saturday, Oct. 1, 1994.

He was born March 17, 1922, in Laredo to the late Panfilo and Anita Garza Pulido. He was a retired self-employed carpenter and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors: daughter, Alicia Pulido of Moreno Valley, Calif.; sons, Arnoldo Pulido Jr., of Baytown and Ricardo Pulido, of Freeport; sisters, Conception Martinez of Edna, Beatrice Mendez of Dallas and Dolores Escalante of Victoria; and six grandchildren.

Preceded in death by wife, Mary Lou Pulido and March 21, 1975.

Rosary: 7 p. m. Monday, Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral Mass: 10 a. m. Tuesday, St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Rev. Jesse Euresti officiating.

Mrs. Mary Lou Pulido

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lou Pulido, 40, of Edna will be held at 10 a. m. Monday from the St. Agnes Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited at 7 p. m. Sunday at the Slavik Chapel and the body will be carried to the church at 9 a. m. Monday.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pulido was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital about 4:30 p. m. Thursday, after she was rushed to the hospital by Slavik ambulance.

She was a native of Victoria County and a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna.
