Claudius National

Edna—Claudius “Jake” National, 64, of Edna, died Saturday, July 6, 2002.

He was born Oct. 6, 1937, in Edna, to the late R. T. National Sr. and Velma Brown. He was a retired construction worker.

Survivors: daughters, Jennifer Goodall of Missouri City and Brenda Joyce Woods of Edna; son, Calvin James Billups of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Ella Mae Lescuer of Corpus Christi and Ilene Barnes of Edna; brothers, Oscar National and Leo National, both of Oakland, Okla. and R. T. National Jr. of Kerrville; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 1 – 8 p. m. Thursday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 11 a. m. Friday at the funeral home chapel, Elder James Mack officiating.

Burial will be at Kerr Cemetery. Cook-Butler Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-3821.

Edward National

Edna—Funeral services for Edward National, 38, will be held at 2 p. m. Friday from the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ here, with Elder H. Hebert officiating.

Burial will be in the Kerr Cemetery, under direction of the Cook Funeral Home.

Mr. National was born Jan. 29, 1936 in Jackson County. He died Tuesday in a Galveston hospital.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. T. National Sr. of Edna; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Mae Lescuer of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Ilene Barnes of Edna; and five brothers, Robert and R. T. Jr. of Edna and Leo, Oscar and Claudius of Oakland, Calif.

Georgia B. National

Edna—Georgia B. National, 68, of Edna, and formerly of Woodsboro, died Sunday, April 30, 2000.

She was born June 25, 1931, in Sublime, to the late Buddy and Novella Lewis Ward. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: son, Robert National Jr. of Victoria; sister, Lillie Alice Lott of Victoria; brothers, Roosevelt Lewis of Edna and Al Lewis of Austin.

Preceded in death by: husband, Robert National Sr.; parents.

Visitation will be 1 to 9 p. m. Thursday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 11 a. m. Friday at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Martin Williams officiating.

R. T. National

Edna—Funeral services for R. T. National, 70, of Edna will be held at 11 a. m. Friday at the Church of God in Christ, with Elders Bowie and H. Hubert officiating.

Burial will be in the Kerr Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna. Pallbearers will be Henry Lester Rhodes, Johny Jordan, Lincoln Edwards and Kenneth Brooks.

Mr. National was born Sept. 12, 1909 at Galveston. He was a retired rice farmer. He died Sunday at his residence here after a sudden illness.

Surviving are his wife, Velma National, of Edna; two daughters, Ella Mae Lescuer of Corpus Christi and Ilene Barnes of Edna; five sons, Robert and Claudius James of Edna, Oscar and Leo of Oakland, Calif., and R. T. Jr. of Kerrville; and 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robert W. National

Edna—Robert W. National, 59, of Edna died in a local hospital Monday, July 6, 1992, after a sudden illness.

Mr. National was born Aug. 15, 1932, in Jackson County to the late R. T. and Velma Brown National Sr. He was a retired construction equipment operator for Wade Construction of Edna.

Survivors: wife, Georgia B. National; son, Robert Lee National of Edna; sisters, Ella Mae Lescuer of Corpus Christi and Ilene Barnes of Edna; brothers, Oscar National and Leo National, both of Oakland, Calif., R. T. National Jr. of Kerrville and Claudius National of Edna; and two grandchildren.

Visitation begins 9 a. m. Friday at the Cook-Butler Funeral Home until service time.

Services 1 p. m. Saturday at the Faith Temple Church of God In Christ.

Burial in Kerr Cemetery, Cook-Butler Funeral Home, Edna, 782-3821.

Velma L. National

Edna—Velma L. National, 86, of Edna, died at her residence Thursday, March 28, 1991.

She was born Feb. 5, 1905, in Jackson County, to the late Robert and Rena Butler Brown. She was a housewife.

Survivors: Daughters, Ella Mae Lescuer of Corpus Christi and Ilene Barnes of Edna; sons, Robert, Claudius and R. T. National Jr., all of Edna, Oscar, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by parents and husband, R. T. National Sr. in 1980.

Services: 1 p. m. Monday at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ.

Burial: Kerr Cemetery in Edna, Cook-Butler Funeral Home, Edna, 782-3821.

Alexander Nava

Alexander Nava, 63, passed away Feb. 28, 2019. He was born Nov. 6, 1955 in Ganado to Jesse Nava Jr. and Audemia Nava.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Catherine Hernandez.

To cherish his memory he leaves sisters, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Dale Rodriguez; brothers, Robert and Dan Nava; 16 nieces and nephews and numerous relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, March 4, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Santisima Trinidad Catholic Church, 2901 Pleasant Green, Victoria. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 5 at Santisima Trinidad Catholic Church with burial to follow at Latin American Cemetery in Edna.

Delia Gonzales Nava
May 18, 1935 - March 20, 2020

Delia Gonzales Nava, of Victoria, Texas, gained her angel wings on Friday, March 20, 2020, at the age of 84. She was born in Yorktown, Texas, on May 18, 1935, to the late Isaac Gonzales and Petra Leos.

Delia was surrounded by her immediate family who never left her side the last few weeks of her life. She married the love of her life, Emil Nava, on October 23, 1955. She was a remarkable woman that cherished her immediate and extended family. Some of her best qualities were being a Christian woman, having the title of the Gonzales Family Matriarch and engaging in her culinary skills. She enjoyed entertaining and always was the family photographer. She adored being around her grandchildren whom she loved very much.

Delia is survived by her daughters, Ophelia Lopez (Robert) of Victoria, Sylvia Figueroa (Santos) of Victoria, and Rachel Lippe of Victoria; son, David Nava (Arlette) of Edna; sister, Rachel Ybarbo (Houston); brother, Ernest Gonzales: sister-in-laws, Janie Gonzales, and Mary Gonzales; grandchildren, Megan Moore (Joey), Ashley Murphy (Sam), Emily Nava, Derrick Lippe, and Dillon Lippe.

In addition to her parents; she is preceded in death by her husband, Emil Nava; brothers, Emil Gonzales, and Joe Angel Gonzales.

Services will be held at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Derrick Lippe, Dillon Lippe, Sam Murphy, Joey Moore, Elton Crochran, and Jeffrey Lassmann.

Leroy Nava

March 30, 1947 ~ November 18, 2020

Leroy Nava, 73, formerly of Edna, Texas, died Wednesday, November 18, 2020, in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2020, at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church. Rosary will be said Sunday, November 22, 2020, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Leroy will be available for viewing on Saturday, November 21 from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. Burial will follow the Funeral Mass at Llano Cemetery.

Leroy was born on Palm Sunday, March 30, 1947, in Ganado, Texas to Joseph J. Garza and Olivia Nava Wilmot. He was raised by his grandparents, Olivia Barrera Nava and Morris Nava Sr. in Edna, Texas. Raised on the farm, he spent his formative years out working in the fields with his grandpa and uncles and developed his strong work ethic due to his upbringing. He was in rodeos and played football. He graduated from Edna High School in 1966. He attended college at Sam Houston State University. He had a love and passion for music and played drums in a band called Dialogg. He moved to Amarillo in November 1983 and began working for Amarillo Imports with Bryce Beard. He remained in the car business for many years, working for several dealerships throughout the 1990s. He worked for a few years at Great Western Directories doing the yellow pages for local businesses. He went back to the car business and worked for Pete’s Car Smart until 2013 when he began working for Interstate Bank as a mortgage loan officer. He “retired” recently and began working for Pete’s Car Smart again, where he was currently employed as the shuttle van driver. He was also co-owner of The Lost Cajun restaurant. He attended St. Thomas the Apostle Church for many years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed going to listen to local bands and had a very good, strong ear for music. Leroy was an amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend and will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor, passion for music, outgoing and friendly personality, and zest for life and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his mother in August; his father; his grandparents; aunts, Velma Murray, Sefarina Constante, and Beatrice Beard Quackenbush; uncles Clem Nava and Morris “Sonny” Nava Jr; and several cousins.

Survivors include daughters, Brandy Yurasek and husband Dan, of Sugar Land, Texas, Holly Lewis and husband Jesse, of Garretson, South Dakota; son Scott of Petaluma, California; sister Maryann Wilmot, of Corpus Christi, Texas; aunts Mac Jimenez of Edna, Texas and Agnes Valenciano, of Laredo, Texas; 4 grandchildren, Reagan Yurasek, Addison Yurasek, Maya Yurasek, and Gavin Eisenzimmer; 3 nieces and 1 nephew; and too many cousins to name in this publication, and many friends.

James Powell Nelson

August 21, 1937 - July 21, 2019

James Powell Nelson, 81, of Palacios passed away July 21, 2019. He was born August 21, 1937in Palacios, TX to the late Herman Powell Nelson and Lois Beatrice Alton Nelson.  He was a member of the Palacios Church of Christ for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Melvina Griffith Nelson and two infant children Janice Renee Nelson and Eric Scott Nelson.

Survivors include daughters Cindy Everett & husband Eddie and Debra Peterson & husband Bryant; brother Jack Nelson; grandchildren Fanci Renee Turner, Skyler Nelson Purswell, Lindee Raine Franklin, Jessie Cheyenne Peterson and Kanyon Bryant Peterson and great grandchildren West-Allen Turner, Bayou Turner and Anakin Franklin.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Friday, July 26, 2019 at the Francitas Cemetery with Brother Wayne DeDear officiating.

Anna Rose Austen Nesloney, 80, of Edna, Texas passed away on Friday, November 6, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.  She was born on Thursday, December 28, 1939 to Charles  S. Austen, Sr. and Helen Goynes Austen in George West, Live Oak County, Texas.

Anna is survived by her daughters; Gina Plant and her husband Danny, Theresa Nesloney, her daughter-in-law; Amanda Nesloney, son Jesse Hester and his wife Becky, sister, Ruth Cortez, brother Charles S. Austen, Jr. her seven grandchildren; Amanda Watson and husband Charlie, Jonathon Hester and his wife Leslie, Catherine Hester, Justin Wade Plant and his wife Monica, Sheryle Lynn Plant Moore and her husband Rex, and Shane Lee, also her six great-grandchildren, Ashlynn Peikert, Blaine Aills, R.J. Watson, Ezra Escamilla, Barrett John Wilsher, and Connor Reese Hester. Anna is preceded in death by her parents, Charles S. Austen, Sr. and Helen Goynes Austen, her husband, Fredrick James Nelsoney, Sr., her brother, Charles R. Austen, her daughter, Jackie Ann Hester and her son, Fredrick James Nesloney, Jr.

Betty Jane Nickel Neuman
March 27, 1948 - July 14, 2019

Betty Jane Nickel Neuman, 71, of Lolita, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2019. She was born on March 27, 1948 in Edna to the late Woodrow Wilson Nickel and Janie Elizabeth Rogers Nickel.  Betty graduated LVN School with honors in Ganado in the 1960's Her passion was helping others. On May 10, 1969, she married Tommy Ray Neuman. She had two sons while still working as an LVN in surrounding towns. She helped many nurses during her career.  Her grandsons were very special to her. She followed her grandsons to many different sporting events. She was always proud of what each of them did in and out of school.

Betty is survived by her sons, Tommy Brian Neuman and his wife Kristina, and Christopher Ray Neuman, grandsons: Wyatt Christopher Neuman and Morgan Lee Neuman, sisters; Faye Macha and Kathy Swain, brother; Ray Nickel, along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband; Tommy, and brothers; Frank Nickel and James Nickel.

Tommy Ray Neuman

Tommy Ray Neuman, 75, of Lolita, passed away, on March 4, 2019. He was born on August 11, 1943, in Ganado, Texas, to the late Steve Jerome Neuman and Ella Jean Darnell Neuman.

Tommy graduated from Tidehaven High School in 1962. On April 21, 1965, he was inducted into the United States Army Vietnam. While he was in Vietnam, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. When he came home, he started working at ALCOA in Point Comfort, Texas, as a sheet metal worker/welder. He was a part of the United Steel Workers of America. He also joined the VFW in Port Lavaca and became a lifetime member. After 31 years of working, he started growing watermelons and cantaloupes with his grandsons. He was very proud of both of his grandsons; he would follow their football and band events in school.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Betty Jane Nickel Neuman; sons, Tommy Brian (Kristina) Neuman and Christopher Ray Neuman; brother, Truman Neuman; grandsons, Wyatt Christopher Neuman and Morgan Lee Neuman; nieces, Jana Huddleston, Deana Gomez, Charlotte Neuman; nephews, Randy Rickaway, Allan David Neuman, Kyle Neuman, John Kenneth Neuman; along with numerous nieces.

In addition to his parents, Tommy is preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Rickaway; brothers, Bobby Neuman and George Neuman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, March 9, in the Red Bluff Cemetery of Lolita. Pastor David Murff will be officiating.

Pallbearers are Wyatt Neuman, Morgan Neuman, Kyle Neuman, Allan David Neuman, Tommy Brian Neuman, and Christopher Neuman.

Joint Rites Set in Ganado For Five Victims of Crash

Ganado—Ganado residents Tuesday began making plans to bury a family of five which was claimed by a traffic accident Sunday night in Louisiana.

Killed in the crash were Lonnie Newell Jr., 36, a former Ganado resident; his wife, Mrs. Barbara Moore Newell, 34, also a former Ganado resident; and their three children, Anna Marie, 12, Mary Lou, 10, and Craig Newell, 8.

The Newell family resided in Baton Rouge. They, along with Edward Grayson, 24, also of Baton Rouge, were occupants of a small car when it was in collision with another vehicle two miles south of White Castle, La., on Highway 1, at 10:45 p. m. Sunday.

All died Sunday night except Mary who lived until Monday night. Grayson was among the fatalities.

Newell was engaged in public relations work with Dowell Chemical Co.

Joint funeral services for the Newell family will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. B. J. Hall officiating. Burial will be in Ganado City Cemetery under the direction of Psencik Funeral Home.

Newell, born March 18, 1932, in Port Lavaca, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Newell Sr. of El Campo, who are former Ganado residents.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Molly Boepple of El Campo, and a brother, Gerald Newell of Gonzales, La.

Mrs. Newell born Oct. 13, 1933, in San Marcos, was the daughter of Mrs. Frances Moore of Ganado. [Anna Marie Newell was born Oct. 28, 1955], Mary Lou Newell was born Sept. 14, 1957, in Tomball, and Craig Newell was born Sept. 21, 1959, in [Jackson County] Texas.

Besides the grandparents, the children are also survived by their great-grandfather, John Parker of Corpus Christi.

Mr. and Mrs. Newell were both graduates of Ganado High School. They lived here until about ten years ago.

Grayson’s body was taken to Monroe, La. for burial.

Ganado—Joint funeral rites will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday at First Baptist Church for Lonnie Newell Jr., 36, his wife, Barbara, 34, and their three children, who were killed Sunday night in a traffic accident in Louisiana.

The Rev. B. J. Hall will officiate with burial in Ganado City Cemetery under the direction of Psencik Funeral Home.

The Newell couple and their children, Annie Marie, 12, Mary Lou, 10, and Craig, 8, perished along with Edward Grayson, 24. All lived in Baton Rouge where Newell was engaged in public relations work with Dow Chemical Co.

Mr. and Mrs. Newell were former Ganado residents and both were graduates of Ganado High School.

Lonnie Newell

Ganado--Lonnie Judson Newell, 64, of Ganado, died Saturday morning in an Angleton hospital following a short illness.

A retired oilfield supervisor, Mr. Newell was born Sept. 26, 1909 in McKinney. He was a former resident of El Campo.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Monday at Ganado Church of Christ with burial in Ganado City Cemetery under the direction of Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lonnie Newell, a daughter, Mrs. Mollie Doepple and a son, Gerald Newell, all of Ganado; four sisters, Mrs. Bill Fleeman of Ganado, Mrs. E. S. Sanders of Port Lavaca, Mrs. T. J. Armstrong of Angleton and Mrs. Elbert Jones of Nederland; two brothers, M. C. Newell of Angleton and Louis Newell of Alvin; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Charles F. Newman

Edna—Charles F. Newman, 87, of Lolita, died Friday in the Ganado hospital following a six-day illness.

A resident of Jackson County for many years, Mr. Newman was born Jan. 22, 1879, in Calico Rock, Ark. He was a member of the Assembly of God church.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Lolita with the Rev. H. O. Bilderback officiating. Burial will be in Red Bluff Cemetery with Hutzler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Odis Gooden, Honley Sears, Rock Young, Q. R. Thedford, Roy Tate and Joe Billings.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Opal Fisher of Lolita, Mrs. Louise Mae Smith of Burnet; four sons, Charles D. Newman of Portland, Tex., Leonard A. Newman of Gurdon, Ark., Paul E. Newman of Napa, Calif. and Vernon Newman of Tripoli, Lebanon; 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

C. J. “Jack” Niccum

Lolita—Funeral services for C. J. “Jack” Niccum, 78, of Lolita, who died Monday, will be held at 2 p. m. at the Edna Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Harry Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in Red Bluff Cemetery near Lolita. Slavik Funeral Home of Edna will be in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Niccum was born in Davenport, Okla., and was the son of the late Harley Emerson Niccum and Myrtle Rice Niccum.

A reside of Jackson County for 49 years, he was a field foreman for Mobil Oil. He retired in 1974. He was a member of the Community Presbyterian in Vanderbilt.

He and his wife, Teresa, married May 11, 1935, in Tecumseh, Okla.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Niccum is survived by two daughters, Rose Wiegand of La Porte and Sherry Holladay of Victoria; a son, John Niccum of Pampa; a sister, Bertha Tipton of Davenport, Okla., and seven

Pallbearers will be Ray Revel, Rick James, Donald Barfield, Clarence Joines, David Barfield and Tony Holladay.

Teresa Niccum

Edna—Teresa Niccum, 82, of Lolita died Sunday, Sept. 10, 1995.

She was born Jan. 12, 1913 in Luther, Okla., to the late Simon and Rose Worel Wagoner. She married the late Jack Niccum on May 11, 1935 in Tecumseh, Okla. She owned and operated Teresa’s Beauty Shop in Vanderbilt since 1963. Mrs. Niccum was a past member of Lolita Garden Club and a member of Edna Presbyterian Women Circle and Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors: daughters, Rose Wiegand of La Porte and Sherry Goodin of Vanderbilt; son, John Niccum of Pampa; sister, Alta Dorman of Jones, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband in 1989; sister, Marian Murphy; and brother, Jim Wagoner.

Services: 2 p. m. Tuesday, Community Presbyterian Church in Vanderbilt, the Revs. Harry Johnson and Jack Hutson officiating.

Burial: Red Bluff Cemetery. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

Betty Dearing Nichols

July 2, 1939 – November 20, 2020

Betty Sue Dearing Nichols, 81, of Edna, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 20, 2020 after a courageous battle with bile duct cancer. Betty was born on July 2, 1939 to Thomas Jefferson Dearing and Donnie Sipe Dearing in Houston, Texas. After graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in 1957, she landed her first job in the banking industry, kicking off a 49-year career in banking. In 1959 she met the love of her life, Roderick Joseph Nichols and they wed in 1961. They had 2 children, Laurie and Lisa. In 1965 the family relocated from Houston, Texas to Katy, Texas and lived there for the next 42 years. After retiring in 2007, Betty and Rod moved to Edna, Texas to be near their grandchildren. Betty spent her time enjoying going to her granddaughters’ sporting events, spending time with family and occasional trips to the casino. Betty was predeceased by her father, Thomas Jefferson Dearing; mother, Donnie Sipe Dearing; and sister, Donna Dearing Nichols. She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Roderick Joseph Nichols of Edna; daughters Laurie Nichols of Victoria, Lisa Gabrysch (Kent) of Edna; grandchildren, Stephanie Laskowski (Luke), Courtney Novella (Jonathan), Morgan Gabrysch (fiancé Rhett Musser) and great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Novella and one on the way, Madisyn Laskowski. Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, November 25, 2020 from 9:00-10:00 AM at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in La Salle. A rosary will be recited at 10:00 AM with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cemetery. (Mask and social distancing is required) Pallbearers will be Luke Laskowski, Jonathan Novella, Rhett Musser, Payton Gabrysch, Glenn Gabrysch and Logan Gabrysch. We would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and caregivers who so lovingly cared for Betty during her illness. Edna—Richard Nightingale, of Edna, formerly of Victoria, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at the age of 78.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p. m. today, Oct. 23, 2009, in Red Bluff Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Green of Hospice of South Texas will be officiating.

Henry Nixon

Ganado--Funeral services for Henry Stevens Nixon, 64, of Ganado will be held at 3:30 p. m. Saturday from the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rick Du Broc officiating.

Burial will be in the Ganado City Cemetery under direction of Psencik Funeral Home.

Mr. Nixon was born Dec. 24, 1908 in Atascosa County, and was a retired oil firm employee. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Willene Nixon and a son, Clyde Nixon, both of Ganado; a daughter, Mrs. Tommy Terry of Edna; three brothers, Ernest of Ganado, Dock of Junction and Hollie of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.

Bernice Charline Srubar Whitstine Nordin

Bernice Charline Srubar Whitstine Nordin, of Edna passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015 in Ganado, at the age of 92. She was born June 2, 1923, in Port Lavaca, Texas, to the late Charles Srubar and Albina Psencik Srubar.

Bernice worked for 48 years for Lee’s Dental Clinic for Dr. R. E. Lee, Dr. Bud Lee and Dr. Mac Lee. She was also a member of Baptist Temple of Edna.

She is survived by her four step-children, Gary C. Nordin and his wife Alice, JoAnn Nordin Roberson and her husband Gilford, N. David Nordin, Karla Nordin Alderete and her husband Frankie; six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, O.B. Whitstine; second husband, Curtis D. Nordin; sister, Elvis Mary Srubar Milby and Charline Imogene Srubar Fife; nephew, Charles Robert Milby.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015, from 5 -7 pm, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015, at 10:00 am in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. Mr. Lyman Mereness Chaplin at Crown Hospice will be officiating.

July 15, 1923 - April 13, 2014


Curtis D. Nordin, of Edna passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 in Ganado, at the age of 90. He was born July 15, 1923, in El Campo, Texas, to the late John E. and Aurora Nordin.


Curtis was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), He also worked at Jackson Electric Coop. as a service man for many years. He is survived by his Wife, Bernice Whitstine Nordin; Daughters; JoAnn Roberson (Gilford) of Edna and Karla Alderete (Frankie) of Crosby; Sons, Gary Nordin (Alice) of Edna and David Nordin of Houston; sister, Mildred Love (Albert) of San Antonio; brother, Cylde Nordin of Santa Fe; brother in law, Warren McCarn (Dorothy) of Nursery; Grandchildren, Rodney Roberson, Shari Belmarez, Jennifer Rocha, Carrie Hall, Derek Ballin and Jeffrey Ballin and Thirteen great-grandchildren.


Curtis is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Geraldine McCarn Nordin; sister, Ella Koons; brothers, Raymond Nordin, Dennis Nordin, Oscar Nordin, Byrtle Nordin and Joel Nordin.


Visitation will be Tuesday, April 15, 2014, from 5 -7 pm, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. A Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 10:00 am at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. R. C. Nored

Ganado--Funeral services for R. B. "Bob" Nored, 73, of Ganado will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday from the St. James Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dick Beckar officiating.

Burial will be in the Ganado City Cemetery under direction of the Psencik Funeral Home.

Mr. Nored was born June 20, 1900, at Paris, Tenn. He and his wife, Florence, were married in 1935 in Pearsall, Tex. Before his retirement he was Ganado night watchman. He died Wednesday in a Ganado hospital.

Surviving are his wife, of Ganado, and a sister, Mrs. Thelma N. Black of Dallas.

Dennis Eugene Norris

Dennis Eugene Norris of Lolita passed away, Monday, Sept. 10, 2019, at the age of 85. He was born in Corpus Christi, on Dec. 30, 1933, to the late C.A. Norris and Ida Pearl Colston Norris.     

Dennis worked at Southwestern Bell in the Corpus Christi area before moving to Alcoa where he worked in the pot rooms and as a painter before he retired from Alcoa. Dennis also served many years as a member of the Lolita Volunteer Fire Department. He will be truly missed by his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, godchildren, nieces, and friends (He never met a stranger).     

Dennis is survived by his three daughters, Shirlene Norris Moon (Joe), Vonnette Norris Tims (Keith), and Sandra Norris Longstreet (Richard); grandchildren, Robin Tims Peeples (Ryan Nystrom), Brian Tims (Sarah), Tracy Nastoupil Fuchs (Kyle), Tierra Nastoupil Fishbeck (Ryan), Cody Smiley (Karli), Heather Tims Perez (Stanley), John Smiley (Bridget), James Nastoupil, Halley Longstreet Siecko (Mark); great-grandchildren, Taylor Peeples, Gage Peeples, Kayden Peeples, Kade Lozano, Xander Lozano, Gabriella Tims, Nolan Tims, Madison Gibson, Emmaleigh Gibson, Grace Fuchs, Kayle Siecko, Kobie Fishbeck, Blake Fishbeck, Logan Smiley, and Shawna Smiley; great-great grandchildren, Aria Bobbitt, Zayeen Bobbitt, and Ava Bobbitt; godchildren, Mark Allen Johnson, and Rachel McFatridge; sisters, Diana Kay Norris Morgan of Mesa Arizona, and sister-in-law Yvonne Pollard Clawson of Corpus Christi, his only two nieces Michelle Pearce (Todd) and Kendra Hodges (Terry).     

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years Darlene Norris; son, Wayne Norris; grandchild, Patrick Norris; great grandchildren, Landon Peeples and Braxton Siecko.       

 Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lolita Cemetery. Pastor Gary Thedford will be officiating.

Leo R. Noska
February 17, 1930 - January 30, 2020

Leo R. Noska of El Campo died January 30, 2020 at the age of 89. He was born February 17, 1930 in Frelsburg to the late John and Ida Miller Noska. He was an oilfield well gauger, a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the American Legion Post 251 and Knights of Columbus 2490.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon Runyon and husband Mathew of Arizona; grandsons Carson Runyon and Tyler Runyon; sister Nelda Keenon of Edna and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Clara Wied Noska, granddaughter Hannah Marie Runyon, sister Lily Strelec and brothers Paul, Pete and Adolph Noska.

Visitation will be 9 am Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at St John Catholic Church in Taiton with a parish rosary recited at 9:30 am. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10 am with Rev. Gabriel Oduro officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will be at St. John Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion.

Serving as pallbearers are Al Cerny, Keith Kresta, Stan Prochaska, Ray Palt, Preston Dornak, Doug Schmidt. Honorary pallbearers are Carson and Tyler Runyon.

Sherry Ann Matley Novak

Sherry Ann Novak, 69, of Edna Texas passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Sherry was born on Wednesday, October 18, 1950in Victoria, Texas to Ora A. Matley and Laura Matley. Sherry was a lifetime resident of Edna, and she married the love of her life; Silvester at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inez in September of 1969. Sherry is survived by Silvester, her children; Loretta Lynn Olsen, Johnny Carter Novak and Scott Brian Novak, her nine grand children; Matthew Jacob Olsen, Katelyn Sierra Sosa, Kyle Allen Peter Novak, Jacob Henry Novak, Jase Layne Novak, Makenzie Linn Barg, Clay Ryan Williams, Cade Layne Williams and Cole Wyatt Williams, her two great-grandchildren; Gary Orland Sosa and Milo Antonio Sosa, her sister; Barbara Castro and brothers; Ora Matley and Edward Matley.  Sherry love Country Music, loved attending picnics, and absolutely loved watching "her" San Antonio Spurs. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and loved her. 

There will be a visitation on Monday, February 3, 2020 beginning at 9:00 am with a Rosary being recited at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Theresa Catholic Church in LaSalle with Father Barnabas officiating interment will follow at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery.

Madelyn Novosad

September 13, 1924 - August 5, 2019

Madelyn Jeanette (Staff) Novosad died peacefully at Fort Bend Healthcare Center on August 05, 2019. Madelyn was born on September 13, 1924, in Nada to the late Frank Paul and Mary Wesselski Staff. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold J. (Tubby); son Marty Novosad; brothers Joe Staff, Clement Staff, Daniel Staff, and Raymond Staff; sisters Anselma Staff, Tillie Janish, and Clara Kaspar, sisters-in-law Cecilia Staff and Betty Jo Staff; brothers-in-law Sylvester Kaspar, Jim Janish, and Dan Gabrysch. 

Madelyn attended Vox Populi School in Nada and graduated from Garwood High School in May, 1942. On September 25, 1945, she married Tubby Novosad after he had served in the Army Air Corps. They made their home in Ganado and raised their family of five. She was a loving homemaker, excellent cook, seamstress, and quilter. She gifted many beautiful quilts to her grandchildren and others. After celebrating their 40th anniversary, Tubby lost his battle with leukemia. Madelyn continued to live in Ganado and was active in the community. She was lovingly called Big Grandma by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Assumption Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Heritage Crafts Quilting Guild, American Legion Auxiliary, and Lutheran Domino Players. Her faith helped her through her struggles with losing her husband and son Marty, her battle with breast cancer, and other illnesses. 

Survivors include her sisters-in-laws Delores Gabrysch, Alice Staff, and Frances Staff, daughter Patricia Haley and husband Robert of Rosenberg, sons Dr. Bryan Novosad and wife Jan of Kingwood , daughter-in-law Nancy Novosad Pfeil and husband, Calvin of El Campo; Ralph Novosad and wife Carol of El Campo, Philip Novosad and wife Denese of New Braunfels; grandsons Jeff Haley, Chris Novosad, and Jim Haley; granddaughters Jeanna Sniffin, Jacqueline Hogan, Dawn Park, Sara Reeves, Heidi Allen, Jenna Flores, Robin Novosad, Julie Belknap, and Anne Marie Novosad; great grandchildren Nathan Haley, Jacob Sniffin, Madelyn Novosad, Cameron Haley, Zachary Novosad, Joe Sniffin, Kendall Novosad, Mason Haley, Blake Belknap, Olivia Allen, Madison Novosad, Tiernan Hogan, Caroline Allen, Brynn Belknap, Theodore Hogan, Mackenzie Haley, Emily Allen, Scarlett Park and step-great granddaughter Gracie Park ; godchildren Michael Gabrysch, Kenneth Gabrysch, Sylvia Little, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Madelyn will be missed dearly for she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M. on August 08 with a wake service at 6:30 at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. Visitation will also be held at 9:00 AM followed by the funeral mass at 10:00 on August 09 at Assumption Catholic Church in Ganado with burial in the Assumption Cemetery.

Delbert W. Nowlin Jr.

Victoria—Delbert Warren “Buddy” Nowlin Jr., age 65, of Victoria, joined his heavenly Father on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, after succumbing to a three-year battle with cancer. He was born March 2, 1943, in Jackson County, and is previously from Edna and Blessing.

Delbert passed away at home, cared for by his wife and supported by family and friends. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Victoria, and St. John Bosco of Vanderbilt.

Delbert was a loving husband, father, and Po Po. He served in the Army National Guard for four years and was honorably discharged as medic specialist 4 HCC of the company C, 6th Battalion, 2nd Training Regimen of the U. S. Army, Infantry. While in the National Guard he received an expert badge in Rifle M-1.

A jack-of-all-trades, he was employed by Alcoa for 16 years, owned and operated a custom hay baling business and air conditioner repair business, and then farmed and ranched for 20 plus years. Delbert retired this year from 3N Farms, which is still owned by his two sons.

He fulfilled a dream in 2005 when he learned to fly a Cessna 172 airplane and then in 2007 traveled to Alaska. Work and family were his passions.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert W. Nowlin Sr. and Ruby E. Nowlin.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline M. Lesak Nowlin of 45 years; as well as his daughter, Teresa, and husband Chris Turner; daughter, Audra and husband Stan Portis, with their two boys, Aaron and Sam; son, Delbert Warren Nowlin III and wife Carrie, with their two boys, Justin and Coree; and son, Jeremy Nowlin and wife Cassie, with their two children, Caitlin and Jace.

Pallbearers will be Justin Nowlin, Aaron Portis, Jacob Belicek, Don Wright, Randy Waters, Shannon Ledwik, Bradley Ledwik and Damon Crabtree.

Honorary pallbearers will be Caitlin Nowlin, Sam Portis, Coree Nowlin, Jace Nowlin, Dennis Morton, Henry Zarate, Larkin Thedford, Morris Crabtree, Robert Thurman, W. H. Bishop, Aurelio Diaz, John Hughes, Juan Vasquez and Wayne Gabrysch.

Visitation services will be Thursday, Aug. 21, at 6 p. m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p. m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 22 at 10 a. m. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Red Bluff Cemetery. Minister Larry Lahodny will be officiating.
