Theodore "Ted" Henry Malek, Jr.

September 4, 1946 - January 3, 2021

Ted “Buddy” Malek, Jr. of Edna, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at the age of 74. He was born in Aransas Pass, Texas on September 4, 1946, to the late Theodore Henry Malek Sr. and Mary Joan Poessel. He grew up in Edna, Texas and graduated from Industrial High School.

Buddy began coaching at age 19, when he coached his brother’s high school baseball team in Vanderbilt.  Fifty-five years later, he ended life coaching in Vanderbilt as an Industrial Cobra Varsity Football and Head Varsity Softball Coach.  In addition, during his career, he was an athletic director for Corpus Christi Academy, a coach for Banquete ISD and Edna ISD, and he coached in many other arenas as well, including Banquete Little League and other sports programs. He also managed Country Center, Inc. for his family and owned Country Center BBQ and Catering.  He was also a long-time School Board Member for Banquete ISD and was active in many organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services, and other community programs he was dedicated to.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach and friend. In the late 1960’s, Buddy attended a dance in Hillje, Texas. There he was struck by the lightning bolt of love, meeting Barbara Gail Wright. The two were married September 24, 1970, and lived their love for 28 years, raising their 3 children, Bowen, Jennifer and Tyson. Gail passed away in 1998. She was truly his first and last love~ he continued his devotion for his family and friends with her spirit by his side, never wavering in his love for all within his world. Buddy’s greatest joys came from his children and, ultimately, his four grandchildren. He was incredibly proud to be able to coach his granddaughter, Avereigh Gail, for the past three years, delighting in her talent and determination. Listening to his songbird granddaughter, Adysen, brought peace to his heart and a soft smile to his face. Watching young grandson Myles play Little League and flag football gave him excitement and hope for his grandson’s future in athletics. Grandson Clayton’s resolve and resolution to run his best race in cross country gave Buddy great pride, as much as watching Clayton succeed in the marching band and his academics.

Over his years, Buddy gained the moniker of “Coach” which stuck with him his entire life.  Coach touched the lives of every person he met. He was truly a man for all seasons, ready to cope with any contingency, showing grace at every turn. He was humble, his word was impeccable, his integrity unmatched. Coach found light in every person and helped them find it within themselves. Coach Malek will never leave the hearts of the fellow coaches, students, and athletes he mentored and motivated over the decades. He loved them and treated them all as family, forging lifelong relationships with them. Many of his former players credit him with their successes, not only in regard to sports, but their positive outcomes as they move through their life. He taught by example, asking only what he asked of himself. His core values of a strong Christian faith, respect of self and others, and motivation to try the thing most feared and succeed in that led countless numbers of people to gain lasting pride in themselves. Coach remained proud of each and every student and athlete he coached and mentored. He would glow with delight when hearing of the triumphs of his former students as well as his family and friends.

Buddy welcomed everyone to his home, people were drawn to his table, whether it be inside or outside, enjoying his food and company.  Often the loudest laughter came from Buddy, as he was his own greatest audience when telling a joke or story. He embodied qualities expressed by T.S. Elliot: “to do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing and to contemplate the beautiful thing~ that is enough for one man’s life.” Those distinctive traits and his love will be the guide for all of us touched by his magical spirit. We can be forever grateful to his family for sharing him with the world. All he impacted with his unconditional love, integrity, honesty, and kindness are better people for having been graced by being part of his world~ he made each of us feel separately special.

Sadness has overtaken Buddy’s family, friends, and all he gave his friendship, love, and care so freely to. It will slowly pass as we wish this dear man endless peace, love, and contentment. Be positive that he is either dancing with his Gail, most likely to a Neil Diamond song, or standing out on a sports field in Heaven, his booming voice calling out so we can eventually find our way to him. Deep peace to Coach, Dad, Paw~ he is a true hero and his selfless compassion will be everyone’s guide: just keep your hearts and minds open, he will find each of us.

Coach is survived by his daughter, Jennifer L. Stephenson-Smiga (husband Joe) of Inez, Texas and sons, Bowen J. Malek (wife MeLynn) of Edna, Texas and Tyson S. Malek of Houston; sister Tessie (husband Larry) Waltman of Canton, Mississippi and brother Michael (wife Billie Sue) Malek of Edna, Texas; his granddaughters, Avereigh Gail Stephenson and Adysen Malek; his grandsons, Myles Malek and Clayton Stephenson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is proceeded in death by his parents; his wife Barbara Gail Wright Malek; and his son-in-law Troy Allen Stephenson.

On Thursday, January 7th, a Celebration of and Tribute to Coach Malek's life will be held at 6:00 pm at Cobra Football Stadium in Vanderbilt, Texas. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am with a rosary to be recited at 10:30 am, and a funeral mass to follow, all in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Victoria. Mrs. M. H. Milby Died Tuesday Night – Sophia Wilkerson Milby

Mrs. Sophia Milby, widow of the late Mr. M. H. Milby, passed away at the Mauritz-Memorial-Jackson County Hospital at Ganado Tuesday night following a stroke suffered the latter part of last week at her home in the south Morales section.

The funeral service was held this afternoon at the Edna Baptist Church and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Thos. Felts.

The remains were laid to rest in the Wilkerson Cemetery near Morales where her parents and many other relatives have their resting place.

Mrs. Milby was born Sophia Wilkerson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Wilkerson, pioneer Jackson County residents. Her birthplace was at the Wilkerson place just south of Morales, on the tract of land where she spent her last days. The date of her birth was September 19, 1883. In July, 1909, she was united in marriage to Mr. Michael H. Milby, also a member of a pioneer Jackson County family of the Morales section.

To this union were born 5 children, three boys and two daughters. They are Messrs. Henry, Woodrow and Michael Milby of Edna, and Miss Louise Milby of Edna and Mrs. Georgia Lowery of Tomball.

Early in life Mrs. Milby joined the Baptist Church and through the intervening years she took a keen interest in church work. She possessed a retiring disposition, and her life was largely centered around the home, yet she was loved and respected by neighbors and friends because of her kindly and neighborly disposition.

In addition to her children she is survived by one sister, Mrs. T. J. Howell of Houston, and one brother, Mr. Archie Wilkerson of Morales.

The Herald joins the many other friends of the family in extending sympathy in their hour of sorrow.

Ruby Lucile Morrow

Ruby Lucile Morrow, 86, of Ganado, passed away at her home on Thursday, March 5, 2020. She was born on March 11, 1933, in rural Ganado, Texas to the late John Alvin and Mable Hicks.

Ruby was a cotton-top kid born during the Great Depression. She was the middle child in a family of three girls. Ruby somehow managed to end up being the boss of both of her older sisters, Dorothy, and her younger sister, Gladys. They both learned early in life it was just easier to do what she said. Ruby and her sisters attended elementary at Little Kentucky School and although Ruby's grades were nothing to brag about, she managed to graduate Ganado High School in May of 1951.

A few months later she married her high school sweetheart, Marvin Gene Morrow. They married on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 1951 at the Ganado Baptist Church, when Marvin was home on a short leave from the Army before he had to go overseas to Korea.

With Marvin's return, he and Ruby lived in Ganado, where they raised their two daughters, Phyllis Elaine and Susan Faye. Ruby was a busy bee, always doing something. She worked at various jobs throughout her life. When the girls were very young, she worked at the Ganado Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. She said that often people would call in and just ask to be connected to their mothers. Without asking their name, Ruby knew who the caller was and who they wanted to be connected to. Other jobs followed, including The Fabric Shop, Housson’s Clothing Store, and Express Finance.

Ruby was an outstanding seamstress and she made all of Phyllis and Susan’s clothes. Despite the fact that they looked nothing alike and were born 14 months apart, she dressed her girls as twins until they were finally old enough to put a stop to it. She sewed everything from baby blankets to the matching two-piece pant suits of the 70’s, and fully-lined women’s suit jackets and even several wedding dresses.

Family and family dinners were always important to Ruby and she taught her girls to cook by making them do it. Her chocolate chips cookies, dill pickles, Thanksgiving cornbread dressing and even her pimento cheese sandwiches were just a few of the family’s favorites. Football season always meant eating her cheese dip in front of the TV.

Ruby’s favorite pasttime was being chauffered by Marvin on their evening tours around town and trips to Dairy Queen for ice cream cones. She loved watering her plants and collecting seeds. The family can now divvy up all those seeds that never got planted and be surprised at what sprouts.

In 1973 Ruby was blessed with her first grandchild, who, because he could not say grandma, gave her the name she has been known by for the last 46 years, “Ma.” She would do anything for her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In her eyes, they could do no wrong.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Elaine Kowalik and husband, James, and Susan Faye Thomas and husband, Jon; sister, Dorothy Baker; grandchildren, Heath J. Thomas, Jana L. Ricketts, Brian E. Thomas, April D. Thomas and Jake A. Kowalik; great-grandchildren, Tyler A Surber, Katlyn P. Thomas, Maren T. Ricketts, Sadie L. Ricketts, and Maxwell Cooper Robles; many nieces and cousins and many, many friends.

The best gift she gave her daughters was she taught them to always put others first.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Gene Morrow; and sister Gladys Wedemeier.

Pallbearers were Heath Thomas, Brian Thomas, Jake Kowalik, C.J. Robles, Brent Burttschell, and John Rickets.

Visitation was at 9 a.m., Monday, March 9 followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at the Ganado Funeral Home with the Rev. Ryan Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Ganado Cemetery.

Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Ganado Funeral Home, 771-8313.
