Christine Jetton
Well Known Edna Lady Died Dec. 23

The subject of this obituary was born October 11, 1865 at Koerth, Lavaca County, Texas.

There she grew to young womanhood, was united in marriage to Mr. John Jetton in 1885. To this union nine children were born. Three preceded her in death. She moved with her family to Jackson County in 1908. United with the Church of Christ when quite young. Died Tuesday, December 23, 1947, at the family residence in Edna, Texas.

“Grandma” Jetton, as she was familiarly called, was known throughout Lavaca and Jackson Counties for her good deeds. Death was not unexpected for she had battled with an affliction that those near and dear to her knew would prove fatal

Grandma Jetton was always reticent about counting the blessings and good deeds she had given others. At all times it is painful to record the death of our loved ones and neighbors. It is sad to contemplate the wreck that lives in the destroyer’s path. Never has it been more so than on this occasion, where the joy and light of the home was so suddenly extinguished. The bitter anguish of the bereaved husband and children and all those near and dear to her.

We are told that death loves a shining mark. How fully has this been realized in the death of Grandma Jetton. To know her was to love her. She was a friend to all in sickness and death and never murmured as to her lot in life—never thought of self, but of others.

Her life has ever been marked by the lovely graces that adorn the humble, earnest and devoted Christian. In the quiet retreat of a peaceful home as a mother, a daughter, a sister, and friend it was her study to practice the doctrine of her Saviour, whom she loved.

She ever wore a smile of serene Christian hope, and by a stranger she would have been known as a happy disciple.

Grandma Jetton will ever live in the memory of her grandchildren, for to six of them it was mother and grandmother. She was a friend and neighbor to all.

There is no friend like an old friend,
Who has shared our morning days,
No greeting like her welcome
No homage like her praise.

In the passing of this sweet spirit we realize the loss of one whose love is like the “shadow of a great rock in a wearing land.”

Her’s was a tender human love akin to the Divine in that of loving service and sacrifice for others, devoted at all times, and glad to bear and forebear and to lavish her best and blessings upon the object of her love.

She had rounded out more than her three score and ten years—a long life, and to those that knew her, how beautiful.

Shrouded beneath a wilderness of flowers, the mute evidence of the high esteem in which she was held.

She had eight grandsons in service at one time in World War II. That was a record that she was always so proud of—that she could give that many grandsons to the service of our country.

The funeral service was held at the Slavik Funeral Home Dec. 24, at 2 p. m., with Arden H. Lawrence, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiating. Interment in the Edna Cemetery.

Those left to mourn her loss are her husband, Mr. John Jetton; six children, Mesdames Si Dial, Stella Meador, Johnnie Good, Edna; Lew and Lathy of Edna and Leo of Corpus Christi, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren, besides many nieces and nephews.—A Friend
