Elaine Hardaway

Elaine Hardaway, 42, of Victoria, died Saturday, April 14, 2001.

He was born Sept. 10, 1958, in El Campo, to the late Green and Clevestine Hardaway. He was a retired laborer for Rice Dryer and a member of Rising Star Baptist Church Louise.

Survivors: sisters, Vernell Hardaway, Verna Hardaway and Glenda Hardaway, all of Victoria, and Christine Robinson of Louise; and brothers, Ray Hardaway of Louise and Alvin Hardaway of El Campo.

Visitation was 1 – 8 p. m. Tuesday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home, 361-782-3821.

Pallbearers: Kenneth Long, Kenneth McClain, Larry Hardaway, Willie Bennett, Robert Miller and Clarence Robinson.

Eldridge Hardaway

Edna—Eldridge Ray Hardaway, infant son of Vernon and Shanell Turner Hardaway died Monday morning in a Victoria hospital.

The baby was born Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m . Wednesday at Cook-Butler Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Billy Young officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery.

Surviving in addition to the parents are the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Foley of Edna, and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William James Barnes of Bay City.

Fairella G. Hardaway

Mrs. Fairella G. Hardaway, 73, of 1207 S. Cameron St., died at 2:30 a. m. Monday at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Friday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home Chapel in Edna with the Rev. T. L. Griffin officiating.

Burial will be at Sayles Cemetery in Edna.

Surviving are her husband, Joe Hardaway of Victoria; a brother, Elder Lonnie B. Green of El Campo; and two sisters, Mrs. Della Spuce of Shiner and Mrs. Alzenia Ward of El Campo.

Pallbearers will be W. G. Green, James Lee Green, H. B. Green, Viron Reed, Andrew Robinson and Norval Montgomery.

T. R. Hardaway Sr.

Edna—Theodore Roosevelt Hardaway Sr., 68, of Edna died Wednesday in a Victoria hospital following a long illness.

He was born May 10, 1918, in Port Lavaca, son of the late Green and Tennessee Lewis Hardaway. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p. m. Saturday at the Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Maurice Washington officiating. Burial will follow in the Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Lee Hardaway of Corpus Christi; four daughters, Nancy Callis, Rosie Lee Dilworth and Eula Foley, all of Edna, and Arline Redland of Corpus Christi; seven sons, Roosevelt Hardaway Jr., Bill Hardaway, Alvin Ray Hardaway and Robert Lewis Hardaway, all of Corpus Christi; William Hardaway and Lawrence Hardaway, both of Austin, and Allen Lee Hardaway of Edna; three sisters, Fannie Bell Howray, Eula Mae Bennett and Beulah Mae Dreary, all of Louise; four brothers, Rochell Hardaway and Green Hardaway Jr., both of Louise, and Joe Willow Hardaway of Victoria, and Johnny Hardaway of Rockdale; 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Rosie Lee Hardeway

Edna—Rosie Lee Hardeway, 69, a resident of Edna, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2015. She was born June 26, 1946 in El Campo to Alice Lee Redland. She worked as a Nurse’s Aide.

A visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a. m. with a funeral service at 11 a. m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Scruggs Methodist Church, 313 Carver St., in Edna. Burial will be at Sayles Cemetery in Edna.

Mrs. Emma Harris

Edna—Mrs. Emma Harris, 85, a lifelong resident of Edna, died Saturday in a Ganado hospital following a short illness.

Born Aug. 29, 1897, in Edna, she was a member of Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. T. L. Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in Sayles Cemetery.

Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are two brothers, Walter Young of Edna and Olen Young of Corpus Christi.

Pallbearers will be Tom Sayles, Claude and Curtis Prince, Alvin Stovall, Ralph Robinson and George Jones.

Laura B. Harris

Edna—Laura Bernice Harris, 89, of Edna, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999.

She was born Feb. 11, 1910, in Edna, to the late Matthew Sayles and the late Norma Bass. She was a retired nurse and teacher.

Survivors: Ocatavia Cook and Thyra Bowden, both of Edna and brother Matthew Sayles Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.

Preceded in death by: parents and husband, Clifton Harris.

Visitation will be 9 a. m. to 8 p. m. Tuesday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home in Edna.

Services will be 1 p. m. Wednesday at Scruggs United Methodist Church in Edna.

Mrs. Florene E. Haynes

Edna—Florene E. Haynes, 98, of Edna died Saturday in a local rest home.

She was born in Edna on Jan. 1, 1880.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m.  Tuesday, at the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Surviving is one foster daughter, Theola Williams of Houston.

Donald Ray Hengst
January 09, 1940 - June 18, 2018

Donald “Don” Ray Hengst, of Edna, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018 at the age of 70. He was born in Cuero, Texas, on July 12, 1947 to the late Roland G. Hengst and Florence Ledwig Hengst. Don worked 40 plus years in the oilfield where he became a successful self-made businessman and earned the respect and of many people, and made many dear friends. Everything Don did he did with a wonderful presence, good heart and was always funny with a witty come back. He touched the hearts of everyone and will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his loving wife, Leslie Hengst; step-children, Jaime Young, Chelsea Huth, Sharon Hamilton, Deborah Hunt, David Gloor, Wayne Gloor; sisters, Pasty Johns, Stella Trahan (Tim), and Brenda Kizer (Charlie); brothers, Richard Hengst (Kathy) and Gilbert Hengst (Evelyn); several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents Don is preceded in death by; Jewel Rosalie Hengst, Roland Hengst, Ronald Hengst, and Donald Hengst. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend George Tompkins will be officiating. Elias V. Hernandez

Edna—Funeral services for Elias V. Hernandez, 49, of Edna will be held at 9 a. m. Wednesday from the St. Agnes Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday at the Slavik Chapel.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mr. Hernandez was born April 17, 1925, in Yorktown and had lived in this Jackson county since 1943. He was employed many years by a feed company and later a water well service before his illness. He died Sunday in a Victoria hospital.

Surviving are his father, Jesus Hernandez of San Antonio, his wife, Hortencia of Edna; three daughters, Gloria and Linda of Edna, and Lupe of San Antonio; a son, Marcus of San Antonio; and a step-son, Jerry Ortiz of Victoria; three sisters, Ramona Jaramillo and Guadalupe Hernandez of San Antonio and Frances Zaratuchi of San Angelo; five brothers, Jesus Jr. and Jose of San Antonio, Domingo of Port Lavaca, and Mike and Pedro of Pontiac, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bennie Gonzales, Henry Palacios, Phillip and John Hernandez, Domingo Villala and Arnold Palido Jr.

Joe G. Hernandez Sr.

Edna—Joe G. Hernandez Sr., 65, of Edna died Sunday in an Edna hospital following a lengthy illness.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p. m. Tuesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Edna Latin American Cemetery.

Mr. Hernandez was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Jackson County. He was a retired contractor and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Eusebia Barrientos Hernandez, of Edna; three daughters, Janie Zamora and Mary Linda Sertuche, of Edna, and Emily Zarate of Granbury; 10 sons, Felix, Joe Jr., Ignacio, Lucio, Tommy, Johnny, Manual, Jesse, Emilio and Domingo Hernandez, all of Edna; two sisters, Marcello Soto and Mary Verver, both of Edna; and three brothers, Fred Gonzales of Lolita, Modesto Hernandez of Edna and Antonio Hernandez of Victoria; 43 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Joe, Ricky, Domingo, Santana and David Hernandez, and Gilbert Vega.

Daniel Herrera

Edna—Daniel Herrera, 64, of Edna died Thursday in a Houston hospital.

Mr. Herrera was born Oct. 6, 1918, and was a lifelong resident of Edna.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church and retired employee of Brown and Root Construction Co.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p. m. Friday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Hybner officiating.

Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Castro of Elk City, Okla., Mrs. Angelita Covarrubia of Edna and Mrs. Mary Garza of Edna; five brothers, Leonard, Antonio and Lupe of Edna, Ray of Wichita Falls and Frank of Houston.

Pallbearers will be Jesse Garza Sr., John Robert Herrera, Ray Herrera Sr., Larry Morales, Joe Herrera and Ralph Herrera.

Alvin Hilgart


Alvin Hilgart, of Edna, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at the age of 81.

 

He was born in Park Falls, Wis. on Jan. 1, 1937, to the late Mike Hilgart and Eva Cahill Hilgart.

 

Alvin was retired from USAF after 20 years of serving in Germany,  Vietnam and Thailand. He also owned and operated Al’s Garage in Edna before he retired. Alvin was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed.

 

Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 59 1/2 years, Katherine Sablatura Hilgart; daughter, Maureen and Pat Andel; son, Guy and JoAnn Hilgart; sisters, Avis McKuen, Nettie Wartgrow, Ginger Berheandt; brother, Mickey Hilgart; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several

nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

In addition to his parents, Alvin is preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Hilgart; sisters, Dolly Peterson and Cleo Mae Hilgart; brothers, Bill Hilgart, Buddy Hilgart, Clarence Hilgart, Albert Hilgart, Kenneth Hilgart, Walter Hilgart and Herald Hilgart.

 

Visitation was Saturday, June 9, from 2 to 3 p.m., with a graveside service at 3 p.m., in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna.

 

Pallbearers were all of Alvin’s grandsons. Honorary pallbearer was Bill Hessong.

 

Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Texas Dornburg Center of Compassion, 1005 Mallette Drive, Victoria, Texas 77904.

Ivory Lee Holcomb

Edna--Funeral services for Mrs. Ivory Lee Holcomb, 56, of Edna will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be M. B. Barnes, Lincoln and Freddie Edwards, B. J. Jordan, Kenneth Brooks Jr., and J. D. Jones.

Mrs. Holcomb was born Jan. 18, 1923 in Jackson County, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She died Friday in a local hospital.

Surviving are her father Allen Chinn of Houston, two daughters, Mrs. Linda K. Mathis of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Ms. Carolyn Chinn of Bay City;  three sons, Floyd David Rhoder and James Chinn of Wharton and Bernard Holcomb of Edna and three grandchildren.

Alvora Hollingsworth

Edna—Alvora Hollingsworth, 78, of Edna, died Tuesday at a Victoria nursing home.

Miss Hollingsworth was born Nov. 23, 1908, in Edna to Henry and Susie Ware.

Services will be at 1 p. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Edna, with the Rev. Gary Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery in Edna.

Pallbearers will be Brushall Ross Jr., Burney Ross, Creston Parlor, Wallace Wysong, Shelton Ross and Burney T. Allen Jr.

Mrs. Edith Hopes

El Campo—Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Hopes, 57, of El Campo, a native of Jackson County, will be held at 12 noon Saturday from the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church in El Campo, with the Rev. F. L. Daniels officiating.

Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery at Edna under direction of the Cook Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Elijah, Claude, Lawrence, Curtis and Jerry Prince and Willie Roy Reathy.

Mrs. Hopes was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Jackson County, but had resided many years in El Campo. She died at her residence here Wednesday. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Kate Boston.

Surviving  are her husband, Lee Hopes of El Campo; daughter, Mrs. Barbara Henson of Marlin; step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Willis of Pomona, Calif.; son, Jerome Hopes of Richmond; two step-sons, Royce Hopes of Houston and Graylin Hopes of El Campo; two sisters, Mrs. Pinkie Johnson of Houston and Mrs. Eva Ewers of Corpus Christi; brother, E. J. Boston of Edna; three grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

Kyron Jaleel Hopes

Kyron Jaleel Hopes, of Edna, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 22, 2018, at the young age of 10. He was born in Victoria on Nov. 22, 2007, to Cron Hopes and Whitney Turner.       

Kyron is survived by his parents, Cron Hopes and Whitney Turner; grandparents who played a significant role in his life, Chris Turner, Janie Turner and Kendra Dilworth; sister, Camilla Hopes; brothers, Aidynn Martin and Carter Hopes; he is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.     

Kyron touched the hearts of everyone who encountered him, he will be dearly missed.     

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 11 a.m., in the Shiloh Baptist Church in Edna. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. Rev. Robert L. Roberts will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Chris Turner, Dwayne Hopes, Terek Dilworth, and Marquis Bates.     

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust Ave., Victoria, Tx 77901.

Oneal Hopes Sr.

Edna—Oneal Hopes Sr., 74, of Edna, died Monday in a local hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held 1 p. m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating.

Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Mr. Hopes was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Edna, to the late Newton and Polly Brown Hopes. A lifelong resident of Edna, he was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Jeanette Holland of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Roosevelt Hopes of Houston, and Bobby Ray Hopes of Victoria; a sister, Ilea Clay of Edna; and 24 grandchildren.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. They are Douglas White, Kenneth Basey, Marion Basey Jr., Ricky Basey, James Basey, Ronald Hopes, Derrick Hopes, Roosevelt Hopes Jr. and Myron Hopes.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Evening Sun Lodge No. 530.

Pauline M. Hopes

Edna—Pauline Maxine Hopes, 91, of Edna, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006.

She was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Jackson County, to the late Siah and Pauline Smith Turner. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Preceded in death by: husband, Roman Hopes; sisters, Annie Howard and Alzenia Green; and brothers, George Henry Turner and Siah Turner Jr.

Graveside services will be 11 a. m. today at Sayles Cemetery in Edna. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2152.

Shirley Hopes

Edna—Shirley Hopes, 69, of Edna, passed away April 11, 2016 in Victoria. She was born January 26, 1947, in Edna, to the late Robert Reed Jr. and Myrtle Allen Reed.

She is survived by her husband, Willie James Hopes, daughter, Kimberly Montgomery, son, Norvell Montgomery, two brothers, Robert Allen Reed and Viron Reed, two grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Georgia Housson

 

Georgia Marie Marek Housson, 85 of Ganado, passed away on  Saturday, June 30, 2018, in Houston.

 

Visitation was held Monday, July 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m.

 

Funeral mass was Tuesday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Ganado with Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiating.

Interment followed in the Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Ganado.

 

Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Ganado and Slavik Funeral Homes, Ganado, 361-771- 2120.

Edna—Annie Bell Howard, 90, of Edna died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997.

She was born Oct. 9, 1906, in Edna to the late Siah and Pauline Smith Turner. The homemaker was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors: sons, Willie Louis Singleton of Edna and Johnnie Singleton Jr. of San Antonio; sister, Maxine Hopes of Edna; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Howard was a retired ranch laborer and barbecue stand operator.

Newton Howard

Edna—Newton Howard, 74, of Edna, died Saturday in an Edna hospital following a sudden illness.

He was born Feb. 25, 1913, in Jackson County to the late Henry and Della Holmes Howard Sr. He was a retired service station attendant.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. H. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ellen Howard of Edna; a stepdaughter, Renae King of Houston; two step-sons, Charles A. Houston of Abilene and Andrew Houston of Fort Worth; five sisters, Louise Cotman and Amy Coleman, both of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Mable Young, Mrs. Pauline Griffin and Mrs. Betty Edwards, all of Edna; a brother, Henry Howard Jr. of San Antonio; and six step-grandchildren.

Pauline Howard

Edna—Pauline Howard, 79, of Edna, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003.

She was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Edna, to the late Henry and Della Holmes Howard. She was a Baptist.

Survivors: daughters, Doris M. Brooks of Victoria and Ruby Lynn Butler of Dallas; son, Vernon Daniels Jr. of Victoria; sister, Betty Edwards of Edna; and seven grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents, sisters, Amy Coleman, Vida Howard, Priscilla Haegin. Louise Cotman and Mable Young; and brothers, Newton Howard and Henry Howard Jr.

Visitation will be 5 – 8 p. m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a. m. Tuesday at the church, the Rev. Gary Roberts officiating.

Wilmot Howard

Edna--Mrs. Wilmot Howard died Tuesday at her home in Edna.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p. m. at the Scruggs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Billy Young officiating. Burial will be in the Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Dean, William Dean, Tom Sayles, Robert Reed Jr., J. D. Harris, Eugene Gibson and Walter Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Howard Jr., Ollie Cook, Elijah Diggs and Clarence Diggs.

Surviving are her husband, Newton Howard; two brothers, Thomas and William Dean of Edna; and a sister, Mrs. Thelma Rosalee Diggs of Edna.

Helen Darlene Huff


Helen Darlene Huff, of Edna, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at the age of 73. She was born in Edna on Oct. 18, 1944, to the late William Gregory and Nora Lee Tompkins Gregory.

 

Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and who will be missed dearly.

 

Helen is survived by her loving companion, William James Hefner; daughter, Carrie Barnee Rice; son, Charles Robert Huff (Cathy); grandchildren, Virginia Malesiewski, Hannah Huff, Sierra Hugger, Tiffany Huff, David Lowell, Brandi Christensen, and John Huff; nine great-grandchildren; furbaby, Corky; and several nieces and nephews.
 

In addition to her parents Helen is preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Gregory and grandson, Benjamin Rice, Jr.
 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Annmarie Hughes

Edna—Annmarie Hughes, 24, of Edna, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004.

She was born June 2, 1980, in Victoria, to Debra Coonan of Edna and the late Harold J. Hughes Jr. She was a nurse’s aide.

Survivors: daughter, Cheyenne Michelle Hughes of Edna; son, Michael James Hart of Edna; brothers, John Michael Hughes and James Robert Hughes, both of Edna.

Burial was held Wednesday at Sayles Cemetery. Cook-Butler Funeral Home, El Campo, 361-782-3821.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help defray funeral expenses.
