Services Held Saturday For Garcia Youth – Danny Garcia

Last rites were held at St. Agnes Church Saturday at 11 a. m. for Danny Garcia, 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Garcia, who was suffocated to death last Thursday afternoon when an abandoned refrigerator snapped shut on him. Burial was in Edna Cemetery and Rev. B. Janacek officiated.

Little Daniel, a student in the new St. Agnes Parochial School, was playing with children in the neighborhood around 3 o’clock in the afternoon. He apparently crawled into the box to hide, when the door slammed shut and locked.

A search was started sometime later when the youth was missed, but he was not found until about 6:30 o’clock, some three and a half hours later, when a girl, Lydia Gonzales, 4, opened the door to check the refrigerator. She discovered the youth cramped in the box.

The parents and other searchers first believed they felt some pulse, and Daniel was rushed to the County Hospital. However, physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival.

The refrigerator, in a neighbor’s yard, is reported to have been set out to be picked up by a trash man.

The death was only one of many that abandoned refrigerators have claimed in recent years.

Survivors include the parents, and one brother and four sisters, Bobby and Lupe, Lydia, Melba and Janie.
