Mortuary
Sudden Death of Mr. Gisler

Victoria, Tex., Feb.9--Mr. A. Gisler, whose sudden death occurred in Edna last night, has scores of friends in Victoria and others of the coast counties and towns who will be shocked and grieved when the sad news of his demise reaches them. For years he had been prominent in the business and mercantile circles of his town, and bore the honorable distinction in name of "Honest Old Abe." In all of his dealings he was straightforward and correct, with a heart full of sympathy and charity for the poor and needy. He was a gallant Confederate soldier, and participated in many of the hard-fought battles in the campaigns from Shiloh to Vicksburg. During the siege of the latter place he lost a leg, and the crutches which ever afterward bore him up in his pursuits in the honorable paths of peace and good citizenship will pass down as family heirlooms, attesting the honor, bravery and fidelity of a noble soldier in the cause which he espoused and defended so gallantly. As a citizen and business factor, his death will be greatly felt in his town and community.

Abe Gisler
Another One of the Old Veterans Crosses the Divide

Edna, Jackson Co., Tex., Feb. 9.--Mr. Abe Gisler died suddenly at 9 o'clock last night. He was a merchant here. About sundown, when closing up for the night, he complained feeling badly and, in spite of best medical skill, he expired in about two hours. Mr. Gisler was a native of Switzerland, and came to Texas with Col. G. Egg in the 50's. In 1861 he entered the Confederate service and was a gallant soldier. He was in many hard-fought battles, and was desperately wounded at Vicksburg, where he lost a leg. He was an enthusiastic Confederate veteran, and every year he attended their reunions.
