H. E. "Sonny" Damborsky

October 01, 1927 - January 04, 2014

Hamlin Ervin “Sonny” Damborsky, of Edna, Texas, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the age of 86. He was born October 1, 1927, in Needville, Texas to the late Charlie and Claudia Damborsky. 

Sonny served in World War II as a (Private 1st Class), stationed in Italy. He also was a prominent Jackson Co farmer. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and great grandfather who cherished his time with his grandchildren, great grandchild and he will be missed dearly. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Minnie Mae Yendrey Damborsky; son, Michael Damborsky and wife (Anna) daughter, Vicki Kaelin and husband (Jim). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Blake Damborsky (Lindsey Benavides), Whitney Miller (Christopher), Katie Kaelin and Lauren Kaelin; great granddaughter, Karsyn Damborsky. 

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Johnny Damborsky, Albert Damborsky, Lee Fred Damborsky, Marvin Damborsky and Leonard Damborsky; sisters, Irene Pecha, Valerie Day Baker and infant sister. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 7, 2014, 5-7 pm, at Oaklawn Funeral Home, with Rosary to follow. A Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 10:30 am St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. Reverend Michael Petering will be officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. 

Pallbearers will be Charles Damborsky, Ronnie Damborsky, Ryan Damborsky, Glen Damborsky, Blake Damborsky and Christopher Miller. 

Honorary Pallbearers are granddaughters and great granddaughter.

A. P. Davenport

Ganado – Funeral services for A. P. Davenport, 73, of Louise, who died Sunday evening in a Victoria hospital, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Funeral Chapel in El Campo.

The Rev. Gail Baublet of Round Mott Church of God will officiate, with burial in Ganado City Cemetery.

Mr. Davenport was born Sept. 22, 19087 at Hahn, Texas, son of the late Lonnie H. Davenport and Kate Britton Davenport.

He was a retired Wharton county employee, and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Alma Lamkin, Mrs. Ella Ward and Mrs. Eunice Harrell, all of El Campo, Mrs. Nellie Rogers of Victoria and Mrs. Mattie Lee Redmon of Corpus Christi; two brothers, Roy Davenport of Inez and Duffy Davenport of Ganado.

Pallbearers will be Joe, Steve and Leslie Henderson; Gary and Duddly Frederickson, and Gene Glaze.

Betty Lou Davis
February 06, 1937 - July 30, 2016

Betty Lou Davis, of Edna, Texas, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the age of 79. She was born in Victoria, Texas on February 6, 1937, to the late Clifford Parker and Lou Shannon. 

Betty is survived by her son, John Davis and his wife Melissa; daughter, Linda Clark; sister, Kim Kroat; grandchildren, Trisha Davis, Lacey Davis, Melanie Minter, Samantha Minter, Caleb Davis, Kristen Crow (Joey), and Dustin Clark (Pam); great-grandchildren, Skyler, Elijah, and Samuel; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be truly missed. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gail Davis; sister, Lola Parker. 

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Edna. Reverend Robert Krause will be officiating. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Edna Youth Group, 309 Cottonwood, Edna Texas, 77957.

Daniel Ray Davis
October 08, 1950 - January 12, 2015

Daniel Ray Davis, of Edna, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 12, 2015 at the age of 64. He was born in Ganado, Texas on October 8, 1950, to James W. Davis and the late Nila Faye Goggans Davis.

He worked as a foreman at Mercer Construction for 46 years. He provided for his family and loved the time that was shared. Daniel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be truly missed.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Martha A. Davis of Victoria; daughter, Jennifer Salinas and her husband Mel of Port Lavaca; son, Matthew Daniel Davis and his wife Yvonne of Austin; step-mother, Anna Davis of McQueeney, sister, Diana Jean Ladd and her husband Homer of China Spring; brothers, James L. Davis of Port Lavaca and Douglas Davis of Victoria; grandchildren, Jessica Granados, Joseph Davis, Alyssa Davis, Preston Salinas, Payton Salinas and Pierston Salinas.

He is preceded in death by his mother; brothers, Richard Davis and Alvin Davis. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January14, 2015 from 9-10 a.m. with a Funeral Service to follow at 10:00 a.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna, burial to follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna. Sherrel A. Mercer will be officiating.

Kenneth Alan Davis

Kenneth Alan Davis, 71, of West Columbia and formerly of Edna, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 in Sweeny, Texas. He was born on March 1, 1948 in Corvallis, Oregon to Jack and Valnarie (McMeans) Davis. Ken enjoyed his career as a reserve deputy sheriff and jail administrator for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and as an engineer at Mammoet for over 28 years.

One of his life passions was his walk with God, serving the Edna, Texas and Freeport, Texas communities as a minister. In his off time, Ken could be found in his workshop working on small projects that he gave to anyone and everyone he met. But, spending quality time with his wife, children, and grandchildren gave him the fullest enjoyment throughout his life.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with Brother Leland Rodgers officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving friends between noon and 2 p.m. prior to the service also at the funeral home.

Ken is survived by his wife, Kathy Davis; sons, John Davis and wife, Cynthia and William Davis; granddaughters, Genevieve Davis, Madelyn Davis, and Alyson Davis; siblings, Mickey Davis and wife, Barbara and Ann Davis Hall and husband, John; along with sister-in-law, Diane Davis.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Larry Davis; and son, Chris Alan Davis.

William A. Davis
September 26, 1944 - February 21, 2014

William A. “Billy” Davis, of Edna, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014 at the age of 69. He was born in Wharton, Texas, on September 26, 1944, to the late C. Roy Davis and Maxine T. Powers. 

Billy was a farmer for many years. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed dearly. 

Billy is survived by his sons, Kevin Davis and wife Marcy of Edna, and Will Davis and wife Ruby of Houston; sister, Doris Farquhar of Edna; grandchildren, Haley Davis, Brady Davis, and Will Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by lifelong friends, David and Dianne Coan, Bill and Margie Bryan, Gary and Celeste Hagel and Vondean Schmidt and his long time side-kick Willie Tejeda & his little dog & constant companion Sissy. 

In addition to his parents, William is preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol Ann Davis and his mother and father in law Carl and Viola Johnson. 

Visitation will be Sunday, February 23, 2014, 5-7 pm, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, February 24, 2014, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Swedish Lutheran Cemetery, El Campo. Reverend Bernard Ritchea will be officiating.

Vera C. Dean

El Campo— Vera C. Dean 60, of El Campo, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001.

She was born May 24, 1940, in Ganado, to the late Dave and Ella Boston McGrue. She was a health care provider at the Visiting Nurses Association and a Baptist.

Survivors: sisters, Roena Holmes and Gertie M. Brown, both of El Campo; brother, Dave McGrue Jr. of Bay City.

Preceded in death by: parents, sisters, Elizabeth Callis and Lady Mae Bennett; brother, Cecil McGrue.

Visitation will be 1 to 8 p. m. Friday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10:30 a. m. Saturday at Prosperity Baptist Church in Ganado, the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating.

Mabel Huseman DeHaven

Mabel Huseman DeHaven of El Campo died Oct. 29, 2009 at the age of 91. She was born on April 3, 1918 in William Penn to the late Henry and Annie Hill Huseman. She was a lifetime member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado.

Survivors: husband of 68 years, Thomas "Tom" DeHaven of El Campo; sisters, Ann Harnagel of Weatherford, Aline Galow and Dorothy Weathers, both of El Campo.

Preceded in death by: parents; brothers, Murray, Nolan, J. B., and Leo Huseman; sister, Mildred Meyer.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, at St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado. Interment will follow at the Ganado City Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

Adrian Alexander DeLeon

Adrian Alexander DeLeon,of Edna, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019, at the age of 22. He was born in Victoria, on January 28, 1997, to Derrick Ramos and Jennifer DeLeon Ramos.

Adrian was a devoted son, father, husband, brother, grandson, great-grandson, uncle, nephew, and dear friend who had a big loving heart. He touched the lives of many and will be remembered for his genuine smile. His two sons were his world he loved them dearly. He was blessed to have his greatgrandmother, Nora DeLeon, in his life who he visited often, and they enjoyed meals together especially breakfast on weekends.

Adrian enjoyed mudding and revving his truck, the outdoors, and fishing with his two brothers, Justin and Maleak, along with all the cherished memories and fishing experiences, he had with his great-grandfather “Chico.” Adrian was deeply adored by his parents, brothers, extended family, and sincere friends. Adrian will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Adrian is survived by his loving sons, Xaine Aleczander and Brantley Leonardo DeLeon; parents, Derrick and Jennifer Ramos; wife, Giselle Morales DeLeon; grandparents, Johnny DeLeon, Margarette Wright, Rudy and Sandra Gonzales; great-grandmothers, Nora DeLeon and Guadalupe Ramos; brothers: Justin and Meleak Ramos; niece and nephew, Serenity Norman-Ramos and Lorenzo Ramos; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and amazing friends.

Adrian is preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Jacinto “Chico” DeLeon, Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Zambrano Sr. and Pete Ramos Sr.; numerous aunts, uncles, family from DeLeon, Ramos, Zambrano, and Garcia relatives.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with the rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., on Thursday, July 18, in Redeemer Lutheran Church of Edna, burial following at the Latin American Cemetery of Edna, with Rev. Aaron Glaeske officiating.

Pallbearers will be Justin Ramos, Meleak Ramos, JJ DeLeon, Ricky Ramirez, Joey Heard, and Justin Yendrey. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher DeLeon, Matthew DeLeon, Magaly Ramirez, Ricky Ramirez, and Abdiel Maximilliano Vargas.

Anita Palacios DeLeon
June 27, 1943 - May 17, 2015


Anita Palacios DeLeon, of El Campo, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the age of 71. She was born in Edna, Texas on June 27, 1943, to the late Eusebio and Inez Casteneda Palacios.

Anita was a caretaker who took care of her family and also took care of the elderly for several years. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be truly missed. 

Anita is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Macias and her husband Rudy of El Campo; sons, Marty DeLeon and his wife Elizabeth of Lake Jackson, Arthur DeLeon and his wife Alicia of Pearland; sister, Angie Limones and her husband Juan of El Campo; brothers, Gilbert Palacios and his wife Mary of Wharton, Henry Palacios and his wife Josie of Texas City and Moses Palacios of El Campo; grandchildren, Staci Gonzalez, Alyssa DeLeon, Candice Gonzalez, Alex DeLeon, Pia Amezquita, Derek DeLeon and Ava DeLeon.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe DeLeon; son, Matthew Scott Amezquita, sisters; Jova Martinez and Manuela Acuña brothers, Elias Palacios and Manuel Palacios. 

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 8:30- 9:30 a.m., With a Rosary to be recited at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. Reverend Michael Petering will be officiating.

Jacinto P. "Chico" DeLeon
July 03, 1935 - August 15, 2015

Jacinto P. “Chico” DeLeon, of Edna, Texas passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015, at the age of 80. He was born July 3, 1935, in Vanderbilt, Texas, to the late Isabel DeLeon and Maria Partida DeLeon.

Chico worked as a truck driver for Texas Trading Company for many years, He retired from Case International after several years. Chico was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed dearly.

Chico is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nora (Sanchez) DeLeon; Sons, Jacinto (Jimmy) and Juan Jose (Johnny Joe) DeLeon of Edna; grand-daughters, Stefanie (Mario) Mojica , Jennifer (Derrick)Ramos all of Edna; grand-sons, JJ DeLeon, Nathaniel DeLeon; great-grandchildren, Adrian (Giselle) DeLeon, Alexis Mojica, Justin Ramos, Meleak Ramos, Christopher DeLeon, Matthew DeLeon, Kaidyn DeLeon; great-great-grandson, Xaine DeLeon; brothers, Benito DeLeon of Tahoka, Marcelino (Bay) DeLeon of Edna, Isabel Jr. DeLeon of Grand Prairie; sisters, Georgia (Rosa) Sanchez of Edna, Ramona Herrera of Lubbock, San Juana Ta Soria of Burlington Washington; numerous nieces and nephews and many loving family members and friends.

Reverend Michael Petering will be officiating. Burial to follow in the Latin American Cemetery in Edna.

Chico’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Father Michael Lyons of Ganado Catholic Church and Father Michael Petering, Pastor Lyman Mereness of Crown Hospice. The Home Health of Jackson County, Crown Hospice of Victoria and their staff that visited and prayed, showed love and compassion and took care of his physically and spiritual needs in the last days of his life.

Margarito "Magoo" DeLeon
September 20, 1940 - November 01, 2016

Margarito “Magoo” DeLeon, of Edna, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at the age of 76. He was born in Edna, Texas on September 20, 1940, to the late Ricardo DeLeon, Sr. and Frances Garcia DeLeon.

He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be missed dearly.

Magoo is survived by his son, LeRoy Zarate and his wife Angela of Edna; sisters, Dolly DeLeon of Edna, Vera Martinez of Edna, Mary Longoria of California, and Peggy Kreiss of Austin; brother, Richard DeLeon, Jr. of Edna; grandchildren, Jacob Zarate and Taylor Zarate; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Magoo is preceded in death by his sister, Frances Mosquedo; brothers, Joe DeLeon and Johnny DeLeon.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., in the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna. Reverend Michael Petering will be officiating.

Lt. Col. (Ret) James Mitchel Denard, Jr.

Lt. Col. (Ret) James Mitchel Denard, Jr. (Jamie D.) was born on August 10, 1934, in Jackson County, Texas, to James Mitchell and Ruth Koop Denard. Jamie died at home on May 14, 2019.

After graduating from Texas A&M, Jamie joined the Air Force and upon completing a two year combat training program as an F-104 fighter pilot, he was sent to Itazuke, Japan, where he met his future wife, Reiko Matsuyama (Bonnie). After his squadron was recalled to the United States during the Cuban missile crisis, he returned to Asia during the Vietnam War and flew 149 missions, once coming close to losing his life when his jet engines malfunctioned.

During his 24 years as a fighter pilot, Jamie was stationed at many places on various assignments. One of the most memorable was when he was stationed in Canada in 1968 when he and Bonnie adopted their infant son, Marc Chance. Jamie and Bonnie were long time members of Christ Lutheran Church in Alamo Heights.

Jamie was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, June Lane and Nancy McElroy.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Marc; grandson, Caleb Chance; sisters, Dorothy McCain (Johnny), Mary McFeron Putty, Sue Hilliard (Bohn), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Special recognition and thanks to his longtime assistant and caregiver, Nori Figuroa, and to Bobby Stobb and many others from Christ Lutheran Church who ministered to him and Bonnie for many years of his life.

A graveside service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 10:30 am, Officiated by his good friend Chaplain Howard Stendahl. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a contribution to Christ Lutheran Church (6720 Broadway, SAT 78209) or to the charity of their choice.

Mrs. Gladys Dennis

Ganado--Funeral will be at 2 p. m. Saturday from Prosperity Baptist Church for Mrs. Gladys Dennis, 57, of Ganado, who died Tuesday.

The Rev. W. E. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Ganado Cemetery with Cook Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include the husband, Sammy Dennis; six daughters, Mrs. Ozzie Lee Williams and Mrs. Rosie Gipson, both of Houston, Mrs. Geraldine Sargent of Edna, Mrs. Grace Elridge of Victoria, Mrs. Sally McKnight of El Campo and Miss Patricia Dennis of Prairie View A & M; three sons, Major of Edna, Sammy Jr. with the U. S. Army in Columbus, Ga., and Larry of Ganado; her father, Hathaway Brown of Bay City; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Winchester of El Campo and 15 grandchildren.

Henry Dennis

Ganado--Funeral services for Henry "Buster" Dennis, 73, of Ganado, who died Monday in a local hospital, will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at Oakmon United Methodist Church in Ganado with the Rev. Maurice Washington officiating.

Burial will follow the services in Community Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Born Jan. 16, 1914, in Ganado, to the late Tommy and Carrie Oakmon Dennis, he had been a custodian at Citizens State Bank before his retirement.

Pallbearers will be Floyd, Troy and Shawn Oakmon, Lucious Henderson, Andy Byrne and Marvin Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence Hall, M. C. Griffin, Roy Selby and C. D. Winstead.

Surviving are his wife, Thresa Mae Dennis, of Ganado; a son, Tommy Dennis of Ganado; and two grandchildren.

Major Dennis Sr.

Edna—Major Douglas Dennis Sr., 54, died Friday morning in a local hospital following a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 30, 1931 in Ganado, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Dennis Sr. Foreman of the water department for the city of Edna, he was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Family and friends may visit Cook-Butler Funeral Home between 9 a. m. – 9 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be at 11 a. m. Monday at the Apollo Drive Church of Christ with the Brother Frank Melton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Kerr Cemetery in Edna under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Miller, Johnell Robinson, D. J. Jordan, Albert Bringham, Louis Barnes, Douglas Tones, Lincoln Edwards and Lorrain Jones.

Theresa M. Dennis

Ganado—Theresa Mae Denis, 86, of Ganado, died Monday, April 18, 2005.

She was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Huntsville, to the late Elbert and Neola Burnette Johnson. She was a retired nurse’s aide, having worked for the Care Inn of Ganado. She was a Methodist.

Survivors: son, Tommy Dennis of Ganado; sister, Alice Walker of Chicago; brother, Paul Johnson of Chicago; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: husband, Henry “Buster” Dennis; sisters, Bernice Jefferson, Luella Jones, Ethelee Bryant and Alberta Lee; and brothers, Monroe Johnson, Walter Johnson, Earl Johnson and Elbert Johnson.

Tommy Dennis

GANADO - Tommy Dennis, 69, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Born an only child to Henry 'Buster' Dennis and Theresa Mae Johnson Dennis on February 27, 1947 in El Campo, Tex.. Tommy was a proud graduate of Washington Carver High School Class of 1965 in Edna, Tex.. Tommy worked most of his adult life at El Campo Aluminum in El Campo, Tex. where he worked in the plant, was union president, and ended his career as a long-haul truck driver. Tommy had a passion for race cars, fishing, photography, watching sports, cooking, fundraising for his alma mater or church, and collecting movies. Becoming a grandfather was his proudest accomplishment. He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lydia Gonzales Dennis, a daughter, Thresa Dennis of Houston, Tex., a son, Thomas ' Toby' Dennis (Jenna) of Ganado, Tex., a grandson, Deandre Dennis and a host of relatives and close friends whom he cherished.

Visitation will be held on Thursday February 9, 2017 at the Ganado Funeral Home, 800 So. Third St. from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will held on Friday February 10, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Ganado, Tex. at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the Ganado Community Cemetery.

Harold Donald Deyton

Lolita—Harold Donald Deyton, 82, of Lolita, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 in Victoria. He was born March 13, 1925, in Fort Smith, Ark., to the late Willard and Dora Deyton.

He was a mosquito control man for Calhoun County and a U. S. Army WWII veteran. He was a lifetime member of Lolita VFW Post 8556 and a member of First Baptist Church in Lolita. He loved to go fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie Delta Cobbs Deyton of Lolita; son, Jimmy Deyton and wife Opal of Lolita; sisters, Mereen Beals and husband Gilbert of Lolita and Shereen Ashley of Lolita; two granddaughters; four grandsons; six great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p. m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at Slavik Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a. m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 at Lolita Baptist Church. Burial will be at Red Bluff Cemetery.

Uranous Deyton, La Ward Resident Is Buried Monday

Funeral services for Uranous Deyton, 43, of La Ward, were held at the Lolita Baptist Church Monday afternoon. Rev. H. O. Bilderback officiated.

Burial was in the Red Bluff Cemetery, under direction of Psencik Funeral Home of Ganado. Pallbearers were Pepper Martin, Jim Payne, Otis Gooden, Bill Amey, Edmond Skloss and Don Payne. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Hamilton and Sam Allen.

Mr. Deyton had lived in La Ward the past 12 years, and was in oil field construction. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Lolita VFW Post. He was born Dec. 27, 1919 in Fort Smith, Ark. He passed away in the hospital in Ganado on March 2.

He is survived by his widow, Thelma; two sons, John and Larry, and a daughter, Patsy all of La Ward; also by his mother, Mrs. Dora Deyton; by two brothers, Jack and Harold Deyton, both of Lolita; and five sisters, Mary Schoonover of Lolita, Frances Stern and Essie LeWallen of San Antonio, Mereen Beals of Victoria and Shereen Goppert of Houston.

Willard Whit Deyton of Lolita Area Dies

Willard Whit Deyton, 66, Lolita farmer, died at the hospital at Ganado this (Thursday) morning.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p. m. from the Baptist Church at Lolita, with Rev. T. D. Felts officiating. Burial will be in the Red Bluff Cemetery.

Mr. Deyton was born March 25, 1885, and came to Jackson County 22 years ago from North Carolina. He was a highly esteemed citizen of the county.

Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Mary Faye Schoonover of Vanderbilt, Wandus William Deyton of La Ward, Elmer Jack Deyton of Lolita, Mrs. Essie May LeWellen of San Antonio, Harold Donald Deyton of Edinburg, Francis Elizabeth Deyton of Lolita, Shereen Marie Deyto of Lolita and Mureen Larie Deyton of Lolita and seven grandchildren.

Norma Jean Dillard, 77, of Victoria, died Monday, April 11, 2005.

She was born Sept. 6, 1927, in Harlingen, to the late W. J. Sr. and Lele Ferguson Lee. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mildred Ditto

GANADO — Mildred Alicia Ditto, 69, of Ganado died Monday in a Victoria hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Edna with the Rev. O. A. Busch of Joplin, Missouri, and the Rev. Joe Webb, pastor of First Baptist Church of Edna, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Ganado City Cemetery under direction of Ganado Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ditto was born in Katy Aug. 29, 1917, daughter of the late Fred and Ruth Monigold Peck.

She was an assistant vice president at Citizens State Bank in Ganado and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edna.

She is survived by her husband, Wallace E. Ditto of Ganado. They married March 26, 1939, in Katy. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Alicia Kaye Mott of Austin; a son, W. Dale Ditto of Del City, Oklahoma; two sisters, Lela Kathryn Busch and Floy Ruth Stockdick, both of Katy; a brother, Leonard Peck of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Paul Dittrich

Paul Dittrich, 97, died Feb. 3, 2014. He was bon Feb. 18, 1916 to William and Julia (Beran) Dittrich in Lytton Springs in Caldwell County.

In 1918 the family moved to their farm in the Cordele Community, where he attended school in the two room schoolhouse in Lower Cordele. In 1936 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was stationed in Bastrop and Ten Sleep, Wyo. After serving about one year, he was discharged from the Corps and returned to the family farm in Cordele. In 1940 he joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Sam Houston. After  serving in several Army posts in the United States, his company was shipped overseas in 1943. His signal company made the amphibious invasion in Sicily, in Salerno, Italy at Anzio, Italy and Southern France. While serving with the Seventh Army in France he received a Battle Field Commission to 2nd Lt. in 1944. After the war ended he returned to the United States in November 1945.

After being separated from the service he was employed as a radio technician for several years, eventually he owned and operated a radio and television business until his retirement in 1988. For most of his adult life, he was an amateur radio operator, with the call sign W5LCR.

In 1951 he married Anita DeBord. They had no children. He was a member of the Methodist church, an active member of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years, a life member of the American Legion Post 346 in Ganado, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8556 in Lolita. He was also a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Paul is preceded in death by his wife Anita; parents; infant sister, Bessie Dittrich;  sisters: Mary Quarles, Lucy Calcote, and Minnie Sowell; and brothers John Dittrich, Henry Dittrich and Alvin Dittrich.

Paul is survived by two sisters and also his three special friends that took great care of him.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department.

Visitation was noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Slavik Funeral Home in Edna. Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Slavik Funeral Home in Edna with Rev. George Tompkins officiating.

George D. Dolan

Vanderbilt—George D. Dolan, 86, of Vanderbilt, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007. George was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Mathis to the late Hubert and Myrtle McCown Dolan. He served in the U. S. Army.

George retired from Valero Energy. After retiring, he worked for L & P Lease Services in Ganado until October 2005. He was a member of the Saint Theresa Catholic Church in LaSalle.

George loved life and his family. He never met a stranger. He enjoyed dancing, cards, dominos, and bingo.

George is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Larry Cornejo of Victoria; two granddaughters, Rona (Jim) Simpson of Victoria and Shannon (Key) Curl of Brenham; five great-grandchildren, Tara, McKenna, and Landon Simpson, and Keyton and Kaylan Curl; a brother, Patrick (Darleen) Dolan of Cuero; and sisters, Adeline Harris of Beeville and Claudella Dement Taylor of Portland.

Carlton Ray Dorsey
October 14, 1938 - March 13, 2015

Carlton Ray Dorsey, of Edna, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 13, 2015 at the age of 76. He was born in Bay City, Texas on October 14, 1938, to the late Oliver Ray Dorsey and Lois Euneva Dorsey. 

Carlton was a Deacon at the First Baptist Church in Edna. He also spent many years farming rice. He enjoyed fishing, radio controlled airplanes, and being with his family. 

Carlton is survived by his wife, Carol Hicks Dorsey of Edna; sons, Russell Ray Dorsey of Phoenix, Arizona and Robert Ty Dorsey and wife Kimberly of Paradise, Texas; sister, Joy Wehmeyer and husband Tony of Port Lavaca; brother in law, Jerral Hicks and wife Sandra of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren, Brittany Dorsey McFadden and husband Cree, Courtney Dorsey Janecek, Ashley Ann Dorsey; Great-Grandchildren, Kenzie, Cohen and Raelynn.

March 18, 1929 - December 31, 2016

Betty Jewel Drexler, of Dayton, Texas, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at the age of 87. She was born on March 18, 1929 to the late James Robert Davenport and Ruby Rebecca Scherrer Davenport.

 Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed dearly.

Edna—Robert Alvin Drexler, 60, of Edna, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a retired supervisor for the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority. He also served as Fire Chief for the Edna Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years.

Survivors: wife, Gracie Miller Drexler; daughters, Tammy Williams Kubenka of Edna; son, John Drexler of Edna; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Lon Ransom Drushel
October 11, 1922 - April 28, 2016

Lon Ransom Drushel, 93, of Edna, Texas, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016. He was born in Edna, Texas on October 11, 1922, to the late Solomon Gilbert and Margaret Melissa Haley Drushel. In addition to his late parents, he is predeceased, by his wife, Ellen Henry Drushel. 

He is survived by four children, Lon R. Drushel Jr., S. Henry Drushel and his wife Lois, Margaret D. McClamroch and husband Jim, Carol D. Arter and husband Jim. He was known as “Grandaddy” to Kyle Drushel, Molly Drushel, Haley Sheppard and husband Branch, Caitlin Tew, Sarah A. Moses and husband Edward. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Reid, Jackson, and Ellen Sheppard.

Loving the outdoors he learned to hunt and fish at an early age and continued with these activities throughout his life passing on these skills to his children and grandchildren. 

Always with a mind for business, he started his first at the age of 10. He and his lifelong friend and first business partner Callaway Vance sold snow cones on Saturdays in downtown Edna. 

After graduating from Edna High School he attended The University of Texas. Before earning his degree, WWWII broke out, and he joined the Army Air Corp. Stationed at Marfa he was instructor pilot to students of the UC-78 aircraft. After completing his military service Lon returned to Edna and began his first ranching experience. He married Ellen Louise Henry on February 15, 1947. 

Lon continued to raise cattle and at one time horses. He was an accomplished carpenter having built several of his own boats. While always active in different business ventures he served as the President of the Jackson County State Bank until his retirement in 1985. Lon was also in the Oil and Gas Industry in which he was involved until his death. 

He will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, fairness, quick wit and great sense of humor. 

A Memorial service will be held at the Edna Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to follow in the fellowship hall.

John Clayton Dry

La Ward—Our beloved John Clayton Dry passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi. He was born Sept. 9, 1984, to the late John Paul and Nancy Ruth Davis Dry, who died Oct. 10, 1999 and May 31, 1996, respectively.

John Clayton is survived by his half-sister, Paula Joe Dry of New Jersey; half-brother, John Paul Dry II of San Antonio; maternal grandmother, Barbara Lou Gayle Davis of La Ward; aunts and uncles, Linda Ann Davis and Jackie Milton Small of Many , La., Kristen Jones and Bruce Barton Davis Jr. of Mont Belview, James and Rita Dry of Uvalde, Larry and Carol Dry Carroll of Hondo, and Ralph Dry of Hondo, and Ralph Dry of Hondo; cousins, Bryce Patrick Davis, Kade Ryan Davis, and Austin Kyle Davis; and his step-grandfather, Melvin Peters of Crystal City.

Richard "Rick" Wayne Dunham
January 16, 1947 - July 01, 2015

Richard W. Dunham, of Edna, Texas, known affectionately to all as Rick, passed away Wednesday night July 1, 2015. He was surrounded by his wife of 48 years, Donna, and his children. His service to God throughout his life was what he would want most to be remembered. He served at Robinson Street church of Christ as an elder for several years until his battle with cancer. What most people recall about Rick was his sense of humor. He loved to have fun and joke around, and he chose happiness in every situation. He could make anyone laugh and feel included. He was warm and kind and generous of spirit. Rick served his country stateside in the Army during the Vietnam War. For the past 20 years, Rick worked as the business manager for John D. Mercer & Associates; he retired in September of 2014. During his retirement, Rick spent time visiting his grandchildren and building model railroads, his favorite hobby. He will be so very missed by all who loved him cherished his love. 

Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna Lynn Jennings Dunham of Edna; daughters, Melissa Dunham Winzeler and her husband Eric of Lubbock, Laurie Lynn Hemphill and her husband Matthew of Spring; sisters, Tomelynne Hemingway of Washington, Linda Chandler and her husband John of Yoakum; brother, Bobby Dunham and his wife Donna of Edna; grandchildren, Abigail Winzeler, Will Winzeler and Emily Ann Hemphill, numerous nieces and nephews

Geraldine Zacharias Durham

PORT LAVACA - Geraldine Zacharias Durham, 85, of Port Lavaca, Texas passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017. She was born in Ganado, Texas on July 18, 1931.

Affectionately known among her family as Meme, Geraldine was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed preparing food for family gatherings and could be counted on for making the best shrimp dip. Her fondness for recipes and cooking could only be surpassed by her love for shopping. She especially loved shopping for Christmas gifts and would search for just the right ornaments, wrapping paper, and bows to make each family member feel special.

Geraldine is preceded in death by her parents, W. L. and Frieda Tegeler Zacharias and two sisters, Leona Zacharias and Evelyn Goolsby.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, James E. Durham; daughters, Sandra Roeben and husband Justin, Nancy Wallace and husband John; and sons Michael and wife Dawn, Pat and wife Dana, and John and wife Sissy: grandchildren John Michael, Rochelle, Jared, Derek, Mackenzie, Carly, Megan, Paige and Katie; great-grandchildren Rayleigh, Ellie, Cora, and Olivia; step-grandchildren Heath, Wes, Lindy, Danielle, and Nick: step-great-grandchildren Logan, Makenzie, Purusa and Jameson; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Grace Funeral Home in Port Lavaca.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dan Zellmer officiating.

Graveside services and interment will be at 2:00 PM in the Ganado City Cemetery in Ganado, Texas.

Serving as pallbearers for Mrs. Durham will be John Michael Durham, Derek Roeben, Jared Wallace, Jason Cade, Robert Durham and Ken Hodde.

Sharron Lee (Reynolds) Dutcher
May 24, 1940 – October 9, 2019

Sharron Lee Dutcher, 79 of Ganado, received her wings and flew to heaven on October 9, 2019. She was born on May 24, 1940 in Sunray, Texas. Sharron was one of two children born to the late Elizabeth Beth and Fern Inezer Reynolds.

Sharron graduated from Industrial High School in 1958. She was Miss Industrial and a high school twirler. She graduated from business school and owned and operated Ganado Flying Service for many years with her late husband Chub Calaway. Always a daredevil, Sharron was a wing walker, as Chub flew her on the wings of their airplanes as they performed at local air shows.

Sharron also owned Bear-E-Special clothing and gifts for over 15 years in Victoria and later in Ganado. Through her stores she made many life-long friendships. She was a substitute teacher at Ganado ISD following the sale of her business. Additionally, she enjoyed to work in her yard and loved NASCAR, never missing a race on TV.

In her younger years, she enjoyed to fish and hunt. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ganado. Sharron is survived by her children; Billy Swift, Kendra Moseley (Gary), Kari Clingingsmith (Curtis), Chris Dutcher (Annette ), Jeff Dutcher, Pam Skalicky, Sandy Prohaska (Timmy) and a niece, Connie Bronsell ( Bill). She was MOM #2 to her two special girls, Jill Summers (Ron ) and Nancy Frazer (Allan ). Sharron was blessed with many grandchildren whom she adored.

Sharron is preceded in death by her sister Patsy Holden, daughter Tina Dutcher Sexton and the "love of her life" , husband Albert Dutcher. They were married for 35 years and God blessed them with a large blended family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of South Texas, Dornburg Center of Compassion, 1005 Mallette, Victoria, Texas 77904, or the First United Methodist Church in Ganado in her loving memory.

Visitation will be at the Ganado Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, October 11,2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be at the First United Methodist Church of Ganado on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Paul Beard officiating. Interment will follow at Ganado City Cemetery.

Stewart M. Dwiggins

Vanderbilt—Stewart Morris “Uncle Moss” Dwiggins, 60, of Vanderbilt, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007. He was born April 8, 2007, in Houston, to the late Virginia Juanita “Nita” Owens Dwiggins and William Stewart Dwiggins.

He was a disabled veteran serving two tours in the Vietnam War and was awarded four purple hearts and one bronze star. Military graveside rites provided by Lolita VFW Post 8556.

He is survived by his daughters, Misty Odell of Newport News, Va., Jennifer Dawkins of Ashville, N. C., Laura Smith of North Carolina, April Dawn, and Michelle Lynn of New Jersey; sister, Evelyn “Evy” Johnson of Victoria; and brother, Gary Dwiggins of Vanderbilt.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p. m., at the funeral home chapel. Military graveside services provided by the Lolita VFW Post 8556 will be held at 3 p. m., on Thursday at Red Bluff Cemetery near Lolita.

Pallbearers: Allen Bird, Leonard Bermea, Carl Coleman Jr., Roger McDonald Jr., Lupe Lopez, John Haslerodt.

Virginia J. “Nita” Dwiggins

Vanderbilt—Nita Dwiggins, 69, of Vanderbilt died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1996.

She was born July 20, 1927, in Llano to the late Morris and Jewell Stewert Owens. She was a homemaker and worked at Sally’s Antique Shop in Vanderbilt for nine years. Mrs. Dwiggins was a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors: husband, William S. Dwiggins; daughter, Evelyn Johnson of Victoria; sons, S. M. Dwiggins of North Carolina and Gary Dwiggins of Vanderbilt; sisters, Louise Paschall of Buckholts and Iona Crim of Hearne; brother, Dale Owens of Rockdale; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p. m. today at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at the funeral home, the Rev. Jack Hutson officiating.
