Clyde Budd Accidentally Killed On Hunting Trip

The untimely death of Clyde Budd, a native of Jackson County, last Saturday morning was a shock to his loved ones and a host of friends.

Clyde was foreman of a ranch in the extreme northwestern part of Wharton County, owned by the Kelly heirs of Wharton.

Saturday morning between 6:00 and 7:00 o’clock, he and a Negro man, L. D. Daniel, who worked on the place, were returning from a squirrel hunt when Clyde was accidentally shot in the stomach by a .22 calibre pistol he was carrying in his belt. He died enroute to a Wharton hospital.

The Negro man said they were returning home when a rabbit ran out in front of them, Clyde attempted to draw the .22 automatic from his belt to shoot the rabbit when the gun was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking him in the stomach. Clyde told the Negro he was shot and for him to go to the house and tell his wife. The Budd home was about 300 yards distant, but the route was through a thicket. Mrs. Budd, after seeing that her husband was seriously stricken, went to the Elmer Goff home for help and to phone for a doctor. Mr. Goff and others carried Clyde out of the thicket to a car and started for Wharton. A doctor met them on the road and treated the wounded man the best he could, but before Wharton had been reached Clyde had passed away.

Before losing consciousness, he told his wife just how the accident happened, at least all he knew about it. He said he did not know what caused the little gun to fire before he could get it out of his belt. The pistol had recently been given him by a friend and he carried it more for the fun he got out of target practice than for any other purpose.

William Clyde Budd, son of the late Mr. Billie Budd and Mrs. Rovilla Budd, was born January 19, 1912 near Cordele, and spent almost his entire life in that community. He was a young man who had the respect and esteem of all his neighbors and acquaintances, for he was an honest and honorable citizen.

April 9, 1936, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Nell Emerson. Three children were born to this union, two daughters and a son. The son died in infancy. He is survived by his widow and the two daughters, LaVerne, aged 12, and Ellen, aged 8. Also his mother, Mrs. Rovilla Budd of Cordele, and the following brothers and sisters Miss Annie Bell Budd, Roy Budd, Mrs. Ruby Goldman, Mrs. Clara Lee Padon, Floyd Budd, Cordele; Mrs. Hazel Spencer of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Wilma Hobson of Edna.

To these sorrowing ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Edna Methodist Church where a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered to pay to the deceased their last tribute of love and respect. Rev. I. E. Walker, the pastor, conducted the service.

The remains were laid to rest in the Flournoy Cemetery, near Morales.
