JOSHUA GARRETT

The earliest found record in the search for Garrett ancestors exists in Hebert's(?) early volume. Noted is the death of Jean Garot in 1801. Jean was born in Ireland, and married to Elizabeth. They had at least one child -- JOSHUA GARRETT and possibly another child named Jacob.

Joshua Garrett was a first-year volunteer in the Continental Army -- enlisting as one of seventeen gunners in the 4th Artillery Regiment of South Carolina on February 8, 1776. He was promoted to mattress on November 26, 1776. Their first battle -- against Earl Cornwallis's polished troops -- ended in a bloody defeat. After his one year's service, he temporarily returned to his father's business. In 1778 he refused to join the state militia and was imprisoned for six months due to that refusal.

Upon his release, Joshua Garrett joined General Prevost, but finding it impossible to stay at home, he fled to North Carolina until Charleston's conquest by the British in 1780. He then joined the British army under Lord Cornwallis, and marched with him to Yorktown. Garrett was often employed on secret service. In 1782 he became an ensign in the King's Florida Randers.

After the Revolutionary War, Joshua Garrett settled in Preston, Nova Scotia. British Court was set up in Nova Scotia to accept claims from the Loyalists. Garrett claimed a loss of 1,498 Sterling and was awarded 180 Sterling.

Sometime between 1782 and 1790, Joshua Garrett moved to the Spanish-French Louisiana Territory (Attakapas Post). Because the Original Acts of that area hold record of his father's death in 1801, Joshua's parents probably came to Louisiana with him. While there, Joshua married Rachelle Melon (Rachel Meloncan), originally from Maryland and widow of Irish-born Patrick Frank (Francois) Clark of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Garrett family then moved south to the Bayou Salee (later becoming known as St. Mary [or Martin?] Parish), where he established the Garrett Plantation.

The Garretts owned cattle in Louisiana, as evidenced by cattle brands registered by Joshua and his two children in 1798.

In 1812, Joshua Garrett, with his sons and relatives, joined the Baker's Louisiana Militia to aid in the Battle of New Orleans under Andrew Jackson. In that same year, Joshua died.

According to the old records of the St. Mary Parish area, the Garretts and neighboring Nicholsons were leaders in community affairs.. In 1801, Catherine Garrett married the Nicholson's only son Rufus.
