John Clapton Crawford

Organized Ganado Methodist Sunday School
Sunday School Superintendent for Twenty Years

John Clapton Crawford was born in Petersburg, Virginia, January 2, 1855. His parents moved to Richmond, Virginia, when he was eighteen months old. Here his father died in 1862, and here John Clapton Crawford grew up to young manhood. In 1873 his mother married again, and the family moved to Covington, Kentucky.

August 19, 1876, he and his grandmother Crawford (who was a sister of Rev. S. C. A. Rogers) left Cincinnati, Ohio, on the steamer “Golden Rule” for New Orleans on their way to Texas. From New Orleans they took the train to Morgan City, Louisiana; there they boarded the Morgan Steamer “Harland” for Indianola, Texas. They sailed on a small sloop up the river to Texana arriving there about dark September 5, where they spent the night. The next day they went to the home of S. C. A. Rogers, where John Clapton Crawford lived for the next ten years.

Mr. Crawford married Miss Quintine Dickie, October 19, 1887. They had two children, Corelia, who died in infancy, and Camille, who is now Mrs. W. O. Smith.

Mr. Crawford was a devoted member of the Methodist Church. He was superintendent of the Ganado Sunday School for more than twenty years.

He was an active member of the Ganado Odd Fellows Lodge for a great number of years, and served as it secretary for several years.

He died at the age of seventy-eight on July 10, 1933.
