Ganado Doctor's Services Slated

Ganado--Funeral services for Dr. James M. Bauknight, 75, of 510 S. Fifth St., who died Friday in a Victoria hospital following a short illness, will be held at 2 p. m. at the First United Methodist church in Ganado with the Rev. Bernard Ritchea officiating. Burial will be in Ganado Cemetery.

He was born April 17, 1905 in Cameron, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and held several offices in the church.

Bauknight was a charter member of the Ganado Rotary and the Wharton-Jackson-Matagorda-Fort Bend Counties Medical Society, of which he was a former secretary. He was also a member of the American Medical Society and the Texas Medical Society.

He was also past president of the Ganado Rotary and served as president of the Ganado school board for 15 years.

Bauknight graduated from Texas A & M University [College] in 1929, and from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1930.

His family, when he was a year old, moved to Galveston, relocating to Jackson County in 1931, where he established his medical practice and was active until his death. Bauknight had delivered more than 3,500 babies, in many cases through three generations.

He and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Bauknight of Ganado, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 4.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jim of Houston and Dr. Bruce Bauknight of Victoria; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Seale of Jasper and Mrs. Carol Bishop of Victoria; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Drs. James Sawyer, James Coleman, Ira Jackson, Walter Kozen, Doye Bridges, John Starky, George Constant, and Harold Kleiman.

Honorary pallbearers are Drs. Morse Hicks, E. B. Sanford, Leonard Johnson, and Raymond Zipp; Roy Selby, Paul Kirby, Joe Hafernick, Earl Bell, T. J. Howell, and members of the Wharton-Jackson-Matagorda-Fort Bend Counties Medical Society.

Margaret Bauknight

Ganado--Margaret Bauknight, 93, of Ganado, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000.

She was born Jan. 28, 1907, in Hico, Texas, to the late Francis Mills and Jennie Simpson Mingus.

Margaret graduated from Tarleton State and the University of Texas School of Nursing. On August 4,1931, she married James M. Bauknight M. D. and in 1981 they celebrated 50 years of marriage. In 1931 they moved to Ganado and in 1935 they became a part of the First United Methodist Church. Margaret was an integral part of the church where she taught Sunday School classes for 40 years and served on the Building Committee.

Margaret is survived by daughters, Barbara Seale and husband John of Jasper and Carol Bishop of Victoria; and sons, Bruce M. Bauknight, M. D. and wife Vicki of Victoria and James M. Bauknight of Houston.

Margaret "Mitma" is also survived by her grandchildren: Steve Seale, Shelley Gatlin, Shane Foster, Charlotte Seale, Tommy Bishop, Margaret Bishop, Amy Shelley, Julie Bauknight Eaves, Jeff Bauknight, Jenny Austin and Jill Bauknight.

Additionally she is survived by great-grandchildren: Lauren, Emily, Maggie and Anna Seale; Harrison Gatlin; Miles and Parry Foster; Josh Bishop; Hanna, Hunter and Hayden Shelley; Sarah and Bruce Eaves and Ansley Austin.

She is preceded in death by husband, James. M. Bauknight, M. D., her parents, a sister, Charlotte McCullough and a brother, Odis Simpson Mingus.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p. m. tonight at Ganado Funeral Home.

Services will be 2 p. m. Saturday, April 22, 2000 at the First United Methodist Church of Ganado with the Rev. Conrad Archer officiating.

The family will receive friends after the services at the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow at Ganado Cemetery. Ganado Funeral Home, (361) 771-2120.

James M. Bauknight Buried Here Monday
Former Resident Here Dies at Home in Galveston Saturday, February 9

Friends and relatives in Cameron were sincerely grieved to learn of the death of James M. Bauknight at his home in Galveston Saturday morning February 9, 1929 following a stroke of paralysis.

Older residents here knew Mr. Bauknight for he lived in Cameron a number of years ago. The sincere esteem of the people here for Mr. Bauknight and his family was evidenced on the occasion of the funeral when the body was received here Monday from the home in Galveston.

The body of Mr. Bauknight, who died in Galveston Saturday morning, February 9, was brought to Cameron over the Santa Fe, and interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery with Green Brothers in charge. E. P. Maloy and Sons, undertakers made arrangements in Galveston.

Funeral services were held at the family residence in Galveston, 2327 Avenue N, Sunday afternoon at five o'clock with Rev. Guy F. Jones, officiating. A short service was held at the grave in Cameron, with Rev. P. T. Ramsey of the First Methodist church reading a ritual and offering a prayer. The music was arranged by Mrs. C. S. Peyton, who was assisted by members of the choir of the Methodist church. Two hymns were sung "Rock of Ages" and "Shall We Gather at the River." The casket was opened at the cemetery in order that friends might review the remains.

Pall bearers, who were among his closest friends during the years he spent in Cameron were Judge Jeff Kemp, Wm. Henderson, J. M. Ralston, Judd Davis, A. H. Baskin and Rush Thomas.

Many beautiful floral offerings and other expressions of sympathy were evidence of the esteem in which Mr. Bauknight was held by those who knew him.

James Merchant Bauknight was born in New Berry, South Carolina, May 22, 1869. He came to Cameron in 1898 and was married in 1899 to Miss Moxie Slocomb, sister to Messrs. B. Slocomb and Don Slocomb and Mrs. Ethel Brewer of Cameron. To this union two children were born, Mrs. A. B. Walker of Galveston and Dr. James M. Bauknight Jr. who is a student in State Medical School at Galveston.

In 1907 Mr. Bauknight, with his family, moved to Galveston and launched into the real estate and hotel business having owned and operated the Bauknight Hotels on the beach.

Thursday night, after several games of dominoes with is wife, he retired, and sometime during the night he was stricken with paralysis. Mrs. Bauknight, realizing that his deep sleep was unnatural, called a physician and he was rushed to John Sealy Hospital, but he never regained consciousness. He died at 2:45 o'clock Saturday morning.

Mr. Bauknight was a member of the Methodist church and of the Knights of Maccabee.

Beside his wife and his son and daughter, he is survived by three brothers, Henry Bauknight of Fort Worth, Sam Bauknight of Jacksonville Florida, and Paul Bauknight of Augusta, Georgia.

Those relatives from out of town who were in Cameron for the services were the wife, son, and daughter, of Galveston, and Henry Bauknight of Fort Worth. Friends from Galveston were Dr. C. V. Black and Mrs. A. R. McLane and from Houston A. M. Miller and O. W. Shannon.

Mrs. Moxie Bauknight Buried December 24

Funeral services for Mrs. Moxio Bauknight, 70, former resident of Cameron, were held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, December 24 from the Marek-Burns Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mrs. Bauknight died at her home in Galveston on Tuesday morning, December 23. She had suffered a heart attack some ten days before her death.

She was the widow of the late J. M. Bauknight who died here in 1929. Mrs. Bauknight was a sister of B. Slocomb and Don Slocomb and Mrs. W. S. Brewer of Cameron.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Frank Dent of Galveston and assisted by Rev. Lee Lemons, pastor of First Methodist Church in Cameron. Interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pall bearers were: H. H. Stedman, W. O. Newton John Henderson, Penn Wolf, Sam McDermott, W. O. Triggs, Nat Wofford and Roy Baskin.

Surviving are one son, Dr. James M. Bauknight and one daughter, Mrs. Moxie Bergerson of Davidson, Texas. Four grand children also survived.

The body of Mrs. Bauknight arrived in Cameron early on Christmas Eve by Santa Fe and remained at the Marek-Burns Funeral Home until the funeral hour in the afternoon.

Mrs. J. M. Bauknight, Sr.

Mrs. James M. Bauknight, Sr., of Galveston, mother of Dr. J. M. Bauknight of Ganado, passed away at a hospital in that city Tuesday, December 23rd, at 5:00 a. m. Mrs. Bauknight suffered a stroke Tuesday and continued to grow worse. Dr. and Mrs. Bauknight were at her bedside.

Funeral services were held at Cameron Wednesday at 10 a. m.

To the bereaved ones the Herald and the writer extend their sympathy.

Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Bauknight of Ganado were out at our school Friday. While here they vaccinated the children for smallpox and diphtheria. Some of the children have been quite ill, but we hope all of them will soon recover  and be in school again.
