54th Annual Deutschburg Seafood Benefit

Ross Cunningham—Matagorda Advocate

DEUTSCHBURG—The smell of catfish, shrimp and oysters will attract visitors from all over Jackson County and Matagorda County to the 54th annual Deutschburg Seafood Benefit. The small community of Deutschburg, located on FM Road 1862, 10 miles west of Blessing, will hold the event on Saturday, Jan. 27. The dinner will be served from 11 – 7 pm.

The first benefit was held in 1953 as a March of Dimes benefit for polio victim Charles Wilson and served over 300 people and since that time the benefit serves over 1,500. In 1955, Martha Kubecka’s son, Gerald, came down with polio and the fundraiser was held for his medical costs. Longtime friend and neighbor Frankie Cooper remembered about Martha Kubecka who passed away in 2004. “Martha was a very giving person and loved her family, community and was active in the Methodist Church in Palacios,” said Cooper.

“My oldest son, Steve, was in the same class in school with her sons, Dean and Gene. When they were boys we always made time to take them to the rice canals to go swimming. We would swim with them and have a picnic lunch. She spent time with her kids and grandchildren and always put her family’s needs above hers.” Martha was married to farmer and rancher Oswald Kubecka and had 12 sons: Dickie, Connie, Dan, Doug, Billy, Bruce (deceased), Ronnie, Gerald, twins Gene and Dean, Erwin and James. In 1953 when they started, they had a covered dish fundraiser and following year they had a chicken pot pie fundraiser.

“The first two were not very successful,” said Cooper. “The community center then decided a seafood fund raiser which was very successful. In 1970, they added the Kitchen for cooking the seafood. Martha Kubecka made her famous rice salad. Cooper said that Martha made enough rice salad to feed 1,500 people. The Rice Belt Warehouse always donates the rice, which we greatly appreciate. Martha will not be there physically selling tickets and greeting people this year, but her spirit will be there.

The price for a plate is $8 and visitors can either dine at the community center or get your plate to go.

The menu consists of shrimp, oysters and catfish served with cheesy rice, beans, pickles, onions and hot rolls. Tea and dessert are also included. The cake auction will be held at 12:30 and at 4:30. The proceeds from this event will benefit senior citizens centers, food pantries, volunteer fire departments and scholarships in Matagorda and Jackson Counties.
