Rededication of Hines Cemetery
By Rebecca Reeves “Welcome to the Hines Cemetery – new and improved,” exclaimed Letitia Plummer in her opening remarks during the rededication of the Hines Cemetery on Saturday, May 20. A large group of individuals from all over the state gathered for the rededication and when visitors walked into the cemetery, they were greeted with the sounds of laughter and talking. “It’s nice to see the family members out here. You can see them looking at their graves and for [some of] the youngsters, this is their first time,” said Dr. Matthew Plummer Jr., the Hines Cemetery Board of Directors president. “This rededication of the Hines Cemetery is a celebration of our family legacy. 150 years ago, two former slaves set this land aside from 200 acres that they purchased in 1873 for a family cemetery,” said Jennifer Bailey DeHoyos. The Hines Cemetery is the resting place for the descendants of Joe and Flora Hines who had nine children together. The cemetery has approximately 300 plus graves at the moment Letitia Plummer explained. “At this moment in time, we have 529 descendants of nine children,” she added. After the history of the Hines Cemetery was shared, the new sign for the Hines Cemetery was presented. “When we were planning this program, we wanted to come up with a design that accurately represented this family’s history. Joe and Flora had nine kids and each of the stars around the shield represents one of the kids. The upside-down horseshoes represent the mode of travel in those days. They traveled by horseback. My mama told me that they used to have milk cows, so I put the cow on there. The farming part has to do with the corn because they were farmers,” explained Dr. Plummer. Later on, a flag that looks like the sign will be made and it will be flown on the flagpole at the cemetery. “This homecoming 150-year rededication has been a labor of love,” said Dr. Plummer in his closing remarks.
