Mrs. Mary Hillyard

Mary Esther Tennessee Hillyard born June 29, 1877 in Guadalupe County, a daughter of J. C. and Cinderella Brown, died at her home in the Deutschburg Community, June 7, 1937.

She was married March 11, 1897 to J. M. Hillyard and to this union four children were born, Claude, Robert, Dockery and Viola. A brother and four sisters also survive, namely: M. W. Brown, Mrs. Ola Williams, Mrs. Fannie Casper, Mrs. Darice Weynandt, and Mrs. Ada Ross, and nine grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and mother and true Christian, a member of the Holiness church. Practically all her life had been spent in Wharton and Jackson counties, where she had formed a large circle of admiring friends. Following funeral services at the home June 8, conducted by Rev. L. M. Chapman, the remains were taken to her old home community, White Hall, and interred in the Hillyard Cemetery under the direction of the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Johs

Mrs. Elizabeth Johs died at 8:15 a. m. Saturday, March 27, in Wagner General Hospital.

Rosary was recited in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p. m. Sunday.

Requiem Mass was held at 10 a. m. Monday, March 29, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Brian Crookes officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

She was born November 13, 1882 in Jalagons, Hunkarin, Austria-Hungary. Elizabeth Werz and Erhardt Johs were united in marriage in Los Angeles on April 13, 1907. In March, 1909, they moved to Richardson, North Dakota, where they received their citizen papers in January, 1912. On November 17, 1913, the family settled in Deutschburg where they lived for many years, moving to Palacios a few years before Mr. Joh’s death. Mrs. Johs had been a resident of Leisure Lodge until she became ill and was transferred to Wagner General Hospital.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alice Wright of Palacios; seven sons, John of Baytown, Joe and Frank of Deutschburg, Tony of Hempstead, Erich of Bay City, Albert of Austin and Henry of Pensacola, Fla., 30 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Erhardt Johs

Requiem Mass for Erhardt Johs was held in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Friday, October 6, at 10 a. m. with Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at the Palacios Funeral Home Thursday at 8 p. m.

Born October 26, 1880, in Jalagons, Hunkarin, Austria-Hungary, he was educated to be a tinner and business administrator. He came to the United States in 1904, settling in Los Angeles. Here he married Elizabeth Werz on April 13, 1905. In March 1909 the family moved to Richardson, North Dakota and in November, 1913 moved to the Deutschburg community. He died Wednesday, October 4, in the Texana Nursing Home in Edna.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Johs, one daughter, Alice Wright of Palacios; seven sons, John of Baytown, Joe of Deutschburg, Tony of Tomball, Erich of Bay City, Albert of Austin, Frank of Palacios and Henry of Pensacola, Florida.

Three Family Members Die in Accident

Three members of a Deutschburg family were killed last Thursday (Jan. 30) when the pickup they were riding in was struck by an 18-wheel gravel truck. The accident occurred at the intersection of FM 1593 and 3131 north of Lolita.

Pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Lamoine Orsak were Joe Johs, 80, his wife Rosalie Johs, 77, and their daughter Josephine Johs, 56, all of the Deutschburg community.

Mr. Johs was owner of Johs Citgo Service Station in Blessing.

The accident occurred at 3:09 p. m. Thursday, 10 miles south of Edna. According to investigators, the Johs 1972 Ford pickup had been traveling eastbound and had stopped at the intersection of FM 3131. The Johs vehicle reportedly attempted to proceed across the intersection when it was struck broadside by the 1982 Mack gravel truck which was northbound on FM 1593.

The driver of the truck, William Martin Carmack, 44 of East Bernard, was unhurt. The truck he was driving belong to Frank Marek Trucking Co. of El Campo.

The accident was investigation by the DPS and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept.

Funeral services for all three members of the Johs family were held Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Burials were in Palacios Cemetery.

Joe Johs

Funeral services for Joe Johs, 80, of Deutschburg Community, were held Sunday, Feb. 2, 1992 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Hollie Briscoe and Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Johs was born Feb. 27, 1911 to Erhardt and Elizabeth Wertz Johs in North Dakota. He died Jan. 30, 1992 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson County.

Affiliated with the Baptist Church, he was a longtime resident of the Deutschburg Community and was owner and operator of Johs Citgo Service Station in Blessing.

Mr. Johs is survived by a daughter, Emma Jean Washington of Palacios; a son, Elvy Joe “Sonny” Johs of Deutschburg Community; a sister, Alice Wright of Palacios; six brothers, Eric Johs of Bay City, Albert Johs of Austin, Tony Johs of Sommerville, Frank Johs of Deutschburg Community, Henry Johs of Pensacola, Fla., and John Johs of Houston; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Delvin Taska, George Sparks, Dr. Fred Matthes, Oswald Kubecka, Billy Jalufka and Abner Naiser.

Family members request that memorial donations be made to the FFA Scholarship Fund of the Palacios or Tidehaven ISDs.

Rosalie Johs

Funeral services for Rosalie Johs, 77, of the Deutschburg Community, were held Sunday, Feb. 2, 1992 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hollie Briscoe and Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Johs, affiliated with the Baptist church, was born April 2, 1914 to Carl and Annie Cavallin in Ganado. She died Jan. 30, 1992 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson County.

She is survived by a daughter, Emma Jean Washington of Palacios; a son, Elvy Joe “Sonny” Johs of Deutschburg Community; three sisters, Ellen Tubbs of San Antonio, Frances Newsom of Port Arthur and Laura Dillard of Nederaldn; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchldren.

Pallbearers were John Wolfe, Danny Murphy, Fred Huitt, Donald Glaze, Tony Naiser and Alfredo Schneider.

Jodie Johs

Funeral services for Jodie Johs, 56, of the Deutschburg Community, were held Sunday, Feb. 2, 1992 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hollie Briscoe and Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Affiliated with the Baptist church, Ms. Johs was born Jan. 6, 1936 to Joe and Rosalie Cavallin Johs in the Deutschburg Community. She died Jan. 30 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson County.

She is survived by a sister, Emma Jean Washington of Palacios; a brother, Elvy Joe “Sonny” Johs of Deutschburg Community; and a very dear friend, David Day of Blessing.

Pallbearers were Russel Brown Sr., J. R. Ross, Kent Wade, Doug Kubecka, Scott Stewart, Gray Joiner and Roy Glaze.

Final Rites Held Sunday For John Neuszer, Aged Deutschburg Citizen

Last rites for Mr. John Neuszer were held Sunday morning at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Wesley N. Schulze conducting the service. Burial was made in the Bellview [Bellevue] Cemetery [DeWitt County] near Cheapside, Texas, at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

John Neuszer was born October 26, 1861 in Neutitschen of Seitindorf, in Austria. He came from a family of farmers and at the age of 11 years he came to America with his parents. They landed at New Orleans, thence journeyed to Weimar, Texas, where they engaged in farming for eight years. From Weimar the family moved to Fayette County and then to Lavaca County.

In 1886, Mr. Neuszer was united in marriage to Charlotte Dreyer and two sons were born to this union, Otto and Henry. Death claimed his wife in 1891 and a few months later, his son, Henry, followed his mother in death. He then allowed his other son, Otto, to be adopted by the Martins of San Antonio.

On November 24, 1897, he married Catherine Hester of Cuero. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive.

For some time the family made their home at Pilgrim in Gonzales County. Later they lived at Orange Grove, where he owned and operated a large ranch for several years. The year 1921 found them moving back to Gonzales County locating at Sample, where he farmed, besides carrying on a real estate business.

On January 28, 1927, the family moved to Deutschburg where he continued with his real estate business and farming.

He became one of the most successful citizens of that community where he made his home until he passed away March 2, 1950. Mr. Neuszer took an active part in school and civic improvements having at all times a cooperative community spirit, loyal to his friends and associates..

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Neuszer; three sons, Leo and W. R. Neuszer of Palacios, and Otto Martin of San Antonio; one daughter, Mrs. Rubye Rampmeier of Palacios; five sisters, Mrs. Emma Klorsel of Yoakum, Mrs. Emelia Mueller of Cuero, Mrs. Mary Heider of Kenedy, Mrs. Louise Warake and Mrs. Lena Warnke of Gonzales; one brother, Emil Neuszer of Yoakum; besides a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Catherine Neuszer Held Here Sunday

Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Neuszer, 81, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday. She died at the hospital in Bay City last Friday.

A native of Cuero, Mrs. Neuszer was married to John Neuszer in 1897. They lived in various counties in South Texas, moving to Deutschburg in January, 1927. Mr. Neuszer was engaged in farming and ranching and the real estate business.

Mrs. Neuszer was a member of the Palacios Methodist Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Rubye Rampmeier, and two sons, Leon of Blessing and Willie of Palacios.

The body was sent to Cheapside for burial and Rev. R. Earl Price officiated at the services.

Mrs. Bettie Willis Rampmeier

Bettie Willis Rampmeier was born in Louisiana February 2, 1871, the oldest daughter of John and Lovinia Kennedy. At the age of two the family moved to Plano, her childhood and early womanhood were spent there and at McKinney, Texas, later she resided in Dallas.

She was affiliated with the Methodist Church and O. E. S. Chapter in Dallas.

In March 1939 she was united in marriage to John Rampmeier and had resided in the Deutschburg community until December 1, 1953 when she entered the Bayview hospital, where she passed away January 24, 1954, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 22 days.

She is survived by her husband, John Rampmeier; three daughters, Mrs. Clem Gallrein, Dallas, Mrs. Everett Butcher, California and Mrs. Chas. Cone, Miami, Fla.; two sons, John Willis, Dallas, Perry Willis, Valley View.

Also eight sisters, Mrs. W. F. Parrish, Dallas; Mrs. Sterling Parrish, Lubbock, Mrs. E. a. Erickson, Mrs. Tom Butder, Mrs. C. J. Tucker, Mrs. Monroe Angel, Mrs. Ina Acker and Mrs. Maude Stewart; one brother, J. H. Kennedy, Houston and six grandchild

Services were held at Ed C. Smith Funeral Home in Dallas, January 27 at 2 p. m. and interment was at Allen, Texas.

Pallbearers were R. P. Willis, Jack Willis, E. J. Willis, Cecil Reddick, Calvin Howard and J. P. Parrish.

Final Rites To Be Held Here Friday For Mrs. Charles Thatcher - Candace Thatcher

Graveside services for Mrs. Charles Thatcher, a former resident of the Deutschburg community, will be held at 9:30 a. m. Friday at the Palacios Cemetery conducted by Rev. H. T. Walters of Blessing. The body will lie in state at the Palacios Funeral Home from 3 p. m. Thursday (today) until 9 tomorrow morning.

Mrs. Thatcher died the first of the week in El Monte, Calif. where she had made her home the past several years.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Cravatt and Mrs. Pearl Coward and one son, Hubert Thatcher all of Calif.
