Mrs. C.B. Batsell, Culture Leader, Dies
Mr. Charles Bowen Batsell, 87, one of the founders of Sherman's Little Theater, who was active in the culture life of the city for many years, died at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday in a Sherman hospital.  She lived at Sherman Manor.
Dr. J. Daniel Barron, pastor of the First Methodist Church and Rev. William Tate Young, pastor of the St. Stephens Episcopal Church, will conduct the services at 2 p.m. Thursday in Dannell Funeral Home.  Interment will be in the Mausoleum in West Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
As director of the Little Theater here, Mrs. Batsell, the former, Miss Merle B. Bowen, helped develop its growth.  Her experience as a director was gained at Southwestern University, Georgetown, where she was head of the department of public speaking and dramatic arts, and at the Drama School of the Connecticut Valley Chataqua, Northampton, Mass., where she was director.
After completing her university work, in which she specialized in dramatics, Mrs. Batsell did graduate work at New York, and in the Drama School of the New York Chataqua, where she studied under the direction of Joseph Jefferson.  Under the management of the Redpath Bureau, Mrs. Batsell appeared in dramatic interpretations throughout the Eastern States and Mexico.
She was born Jan. 11, 1879, in Georgetown, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bowen.  On Jan. 1, 1905, she married Charles Batsell, who became well known as a referee in bankruptcy for more than 21 years.  He died in 1946.  He also had been assistant Grayson County attorney.
Mrs. Batsell was a member of the First Methodist Church, and the Listeners Club.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Maymerle Shirley of Tyler; three grandchildren, Michael Batsell Shirley of New York, Mrs. Robert Y. Brown Jr. of Tyler and Mrs. Sandra Shirley Socia of Tyler; and five great-grandchildren.
