Sherman - Dean Martin of Sherman, 101-year-old longtime Grayson County attorney, passed away Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Sherman Healthcare Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Western Heights Church of Christ.  Joe Ed Furr, minister of the church, officiated and was assisted by Olden Cook.   Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery.  Arrangements were under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
Deah was born February 11, 1908 in Elk City, Oklahoma, son of L.F. Martin and Ruby Pearl Stockwell Martin.  He attended schools in Elk City where he graduated from high school and then attended a junior college for one year.  He then attended the University of Oklahoma for one year and graduated from Jefferson School of Law in Dallas in March 1937.  He had learned to be a barber at his father's barber shop and actually worked his way through law school working as a barber.  He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed at Perrin Air base and married Geneva Graham on February 18, 1945 in McKinney.
Dean opened Martin Law Office in Sherman and in June 1959 was appointed county attorney.  He was elected county attorney in the Fall of 1959 and was re-elected for four more years in 1963.  He resumed his private practice in Grayson County from 1969 until his eventual retirement.  He also held other offices as appeal agent for the Draft Board from 1956 - 1971, former president of the Grayson Bar Association, former president of the Exchange Club (a former civic club) and was appointed Honorary Texas Colonel in 1961.  He was a member of the Sherman Kiwanis Club for 35 years, Grayson County Bar Association for 40 years and Woodlawn Country Club for 35 years.
Dean loved to play golf and won a championship golf tournament at Perrin Air Base in June 1945.  He also enjoyed playing golf regularly at Woodlawn Country Club in addition to watching football and baseball.  He won his freshman letter in baseball at Oklahoma University several years ago.  He was a member of the Church of Christ for 74 years, including Walnut Street Church of Christ, Travis Street Church of Christ and Western Heights Church of Christ.  He served his church as an elder for 38 years from June 1959 until February 1998.
Known by his loving family as "Chewing Gum Man" and "Deno", he is surived by his wife, Geneva "Gene" Martin of Sherman; daughters, Betty Baldwin and husband Chuck of Sherman and Katha Winther and husband Chris of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Christine Perdue, Paul Perdue, Jacob Baldwin, Kirsten Winther and Chris Martin Winther; also three great-granchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Michael John Martin in 1959; and a brother, Ferril Martin.
Pallbearers were Elders at Western Heights Church of Christ.
Dean will lie in state at Waldo Funeral Home on Sunday for anyone wishing to view and pay their respects.



Sherman- Funeral services for Geneva M. Martin were held Friday afternoon, October 28 at Waldo Funeral Home. Joe Ed Furr of the Western Heights Church of Christ officiated. Burial followed at West Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Martin, 88, passed away Monday October 24 at Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ medical Center.
Geneva was born December 20, 1922 in Quanah, Texas, daughter of John and Ocie Bailey Graham. Geneva graduated from Sherman High School in 1939 and worked several years in the Grayson County Clerk's office. She married Dean Martin on February 18, 1945 in Van Alstyne. She and Dean were married over 64 years when he passed away in November 2009. Geneva was a devoted wife and partner to Dean. She balanced being a mother and homemaker and working as the secretary for Dean's law firm for many years. She and Dean were longtime members of the Western Heights Church of Christ.
Mrs. Martin is survived by two daughters, Betty Baldwin and her husband, Chuck, of Sherman; and Katha Winther and husband, Chris, of San Diego, California; sister, Roberta Farrington of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brother, Robert Graham of Santa Fe, New Mexico; five grandchildren, Christine Perdue, Paul Perdue, Jacob Baldwin, Kirsten Winther, and Chris Martin Winther; and three great grandchildren (and one on the way).
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, brother, Elmo Graham; and son, Michael Martin.
Mrs. Martin will lie in state from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Waldo Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Western Heights Church of Christ at 800 Baker Park Drive Sherman, Texas 75092.
