SHERMAN - Frances Juanita Schumacher Pickavance passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2010 at her residence in Sherman, Texas. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday May 8, 2010 at Dannel Funeral Home. Pastor Leland Samuelson officiated. Interment followed at West Hill Cemetery.
Nita, as she was called by her family and friends or Mike as she was called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born on November 27, 1924. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Schumacher, a long time resident of Sherman who served many years as the Grayson County Tax Assessor-Collector.
Nita was reared in Sherman and was a 1941 graduate of Sherman High School. She was a champion tennis player and was credited with the design of the "tennis skirt" now so popular among female tennis players. She was also a great shot and enjoyed hunting with her father and sons. She was unsurpassed as a fisherman having taught her sons and grandchildren to cast with a bamboo pole at Club Lake and Lake Kiowa.
On December 28, 1941 she married Col. William (Pick) W. Pickavance, USAF, who preceded her in death in 2002. Throughout their 61 years of marriage, they lived throughout the United States and for several years in England. Pick and Nita loved flying; in fact she soloed before "Pick" in the mid 1940s. She took flight lessons from L.T. Cook. After Pick retired from the Air Force, they bought two airplanes and enjoyed flying together. Another of Nita's passions was oil painting.
Nita is survived by her 2 loving sons, Bill and Tom; 2 daughters-in-law, Nancy and Sue; grandchildren, William III, Christine, Russell II, Timothy, Misty and Jason, and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom adored their Mike.
Nita will be remembered as a wonderful military wife who volunteered her time to help new military families, a fantastic "boys" mother who loved all manner of sports, a giving friend, loving sister and grandmother, great-grandmother par excellence. She is loved and deeply missed by all.
