United States Marshall Lucian L. Stowe died quietly last Saturday, the 28th inst.  He visited Purcell about a week ago and got overheated.  He was taken home where his physician diagnosed the disease as malignant malarial fever.  The body was brought to Sherman, his old home, and the funeral took place from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Stowe was well known in this city, and about twenty years ago was in the employ of the Star Store as salesman.  He was a free-hearted, good-natured man, a most genial companion and universally loved by all who knew him.  The following brief sketch is taken from the Daily Ardmoreite:
Captain Stowe was born in North Carolina on July 13, 1852, and had therefore just passed his forty-third year of existence.  He came to Texas in 1866, and for a number of years was a useful and honored citizen of Sherman.  He had lived in the Indian Territory about 16 years, the greater part of which time was spent at and near Arbuckle and White Bead Hill, in which places he was engaged in mercantile pursuits.  Upon the appointment of J.J. McAlester as marshal for the Indian Territory, he was made chief division deputy with headquarters in this city and to which place he removed and established his home - a home of happiness and contentment.  After the judicial redistricting of the Indian Territory, he became a successful candidate for marshal of this the Southern district and to which distinguished position he was appointed by President Cleveland April 3 of this year.  His appointment was received in this city with enthusiasm, for he was the friend and favorite of our people.  He had just fairly entered upon his official duties and had matured and partly executed plans for his future that now lie unfinished like the hand in death that planned them. Of him it can truly be said his work was unfinished.
The deceased leaves a devoted wife and three sweet and interesting children, Miss Mamie, George and Arthur on whom the loss falls with a weight that cannot be estimated.  In their affliction they have the sympathy of all with whom they are acquainted.
