Charles A. Spears
21 June 1914 - 20 June 1987

Abigal P. Miller
October 1844 - 14 August 1905

Mr. Spears was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Spears, one of three siblings.  He earned is BBA degree in finance from the University of Texas in 1936.  As a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II (1942-1945), Lieutenant Spears served as a Gunnery Officer on a Tank Landing Ship (LST 461) in the South Pacific for 40 months.  He participated in six first day landings and in his own words "saw the insanity ot if all."
He followed his father as President of the First National Bank of Cisco, Texas, becoming the youngest bank president in the state of Texas.  On January 19, 1946, he married Charlotte Russell and the couple were blessed with four children.
Mr. Spears became a key figure in the Sherman economic progress for the 30 years before his death.  Amongst Mr. Spears' most successful enterprises were the growth and strength of Grayson County State Bank, Sherman's only independent bank; the creation of Grayson County College, Blalock Industrial District (Sherman Industrial District), Texoma National Bank and Texoma Savings Association and the re-routing of Hwy. 75 to by-pass downtown.  Perhaps his biggest industrial coup was bringing Texas Instruments to Sherman.
On a front page article of the Sherman Democrat dated June 22, 1987, it read in part, "Sherman's City Council will present a proclamation Monday in recognition of Spears' civic contributions to Grayson County.  As chairman and major stockholder of Grayson County State Bank, he influenced industrial, educational and social advances that made Sherman one of the state's preeminent small cities."
He is survived by his wife of 41 years; three sons, John, Brad and Russell Spears, all of Sherman; one daughter, Mrs. Betsy Spears Hudgins of Sherman; sisters, Mrs. Betty Fee Spears Drumwright of Cisco and Mrs. Lillian Spears Marshall of Sherman; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted by Rev. Robert H. Thompson of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
