Captain J.D. Woods, a prominent member of the Sherman bar, died the early part of the week.  Captain Woods was known throughout the state.  He was father-in-law to Harry Tone of this city.  Born in Carroll county, Tennessee on October 24, 1834, he was just a little less than 71 years of age.  At the age of 24, he moved to Texas and a little less than half a century he has been a resident of Sherman and an active factor in the progress of the community.  He was one of the most gallant soldier that wore the grey.  When the South called her sons into the vortex of war, he answered, enlisting in the 16th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A. (dismounted) and served until the surrender.  He commanded Co. C, under Col. Fitzhugh.  He was a state senator and a member of the legislator.  Capt. Woods was a graduate of the Lebanon, Tennessee law school and practiced in the courts there for one year just before he cast his fortunes with the Lone Star state.
