Lee M. Shankles, 86 year-old retired farmer and rancher and life long resident of the Sherman area, died Thursday, 31 March 1988, at a Sherman hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in West Hill Cemetery. The Rev. James W. Garrard of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church will officiate and arrangements are by Dannel Funeral Home.
Mr. Shankles was born in Grayson County on July 25, 1901, a son of James Marion and Ella Dunning Shankles, attended Oak Grove schools, and married Margie Kretsinger on July 20, 1930 in Durant, Oklahoma.
He was a former director of Grayson County Farm Bureau and Sherman Lions Club. For many years, he was a member of the Woods Street Church of Christ, but at the time of his death he belonged to the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Douglas Shankles and James Shankles both of Sherman; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Isaac Maxwell, T.L. Taylor, Pat Patterson, P.O. Lawrence, Pete Hudgins and Bob Corely. Members and former members of the Grayson County Farm Bureau directors will be honorary pallbearers.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday and other times at the residence, 732 Westwood Drive.

Graveside services for Margie Kretsinger Shankles, 92 year old retired Sherman educator, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in West Hill Cemetrey. She died Monday, 22 August 1994 at Heritage Country Manor.
The Rev. Francis Raffalovich of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bonhan will officiate.
Dannel Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Shankles was born, 21 July 1901, in Grayson County, the daughter of Douglas and Mamie Bothe Kretsinger. She was a 1919 graduate of Denison High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern and a master of arts degree from Austin College. On July 20, 1930, she married Lee Shankles in Durant, Oklahoma.
She taught school for more than 30 years in Denison, Southmayd and Sherman. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Texas A&M Aggie Mother's Club. She was past president of the Retired Teacher's Association. She was a member of the Wilson N. Jones Ladies Auxiliary and served as a pink lady.
Pallbearers will be David Bell, Judd Bell, John McCullogugh, Vic Penton,Jr., Jimmy Shankles Jr., Isaac Maxwell, Bob Corley and Clayton Fulton.
Among her survivors are her sons, Douglas Shankles and James Shankles, both of Sherman; brother, Jack Kretsinger of Sherman; sisters, Sara Williams of Sherman; Mary Fogelman of Irving and Irene Shatto of Montrose, Colorado; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Memorial may be made to the Wilson N. Jones Auxiliary, 500 N. Highland, Sherman 75090; or to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 401 S. Crockett, Sherman, 75090.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.



Bettty Shankles

GIRL, 15, DIES IN AUTO CRASH ~ BETTY SHANKLES
McKinney, Texas
April 15, 1950

Miss Betty Shankles, 15 year old student at Southmayd School was killed Saturday afternoon in an automobile accident one mile south of Anna.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shankles of Route 3 Sherman.
Miss Shankles was riding in a car which collided with a truck. Others in the car were Mrs. V.W. Pinton of Sherman, Mrs. C.N. McAlister of Southmayd and Miss Doris Fox of Dorchester. None were seriously injured.
Funeral services for Miss Shankles were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church at Sherman. The Rev. Don Bergeron, pastor of the Hagerman Baptist Church,conducted. The Rev. W. I. Barnett of Ector assisted.
Pallbearers were Bobbie Ferguson, Albert Hames, Roy Hames, Ray Hill, Augustine Esquabel, Lawrence Terry, Lavelle Terry and Junior Gill. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery, directed by Waldo Funeral Home of Sherman. 
Her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shankles and two brothers, Douglas and James M. Shankles survive.
Nelson's case will come before the grand jury session which opens at McKinney next Monday.
