Bert Mason, 80 year-old resident of Sherman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away June 11, 2008 at Wilson N. Jones Medical Center with his family at his side.
Services were Monday, June 16, 2008 in the Waldo Funeral Chapel. Bill Mayes of Woods Street Church of Christ and Dr. Dan Schores of Sherman officiated and the burial followed at West Hill Cemetery. 
Bert was born February 17, 1928 in Greenville, Texas, the son of Bertran Wright Mason, Sr. and Zelma Lee Jackson Mason. He was an only child. He grew up in Greenville where he graduated from Greenville High School and then attended N.T.A.C. in Arlington (now known as University of Texas in Arlington) where he served in the ROTC program. He married Betty Jean Blansett on January 29, 1949 and they had five children. 
Bert was an engineer for Texas Electric Service Co. 1948-51, Texas Pipeline 1951-59 and Texas Instruments 1959-1991. Following his retirement he worked as a consultant. He had many interests that included volunteer fire fighter in Richardson during the 1960s, was a member of Texoma Woodcarvers Guild, and the Passport Exercise Group.  He attended Wood Street Church of Christ. 
Bert traveled extensively, visiting over sixteen countries. Some of the interesting places he visited were England, Russia, Egypt, Greece and Japan. His other interests included history, genealogy, gardening and keeping up with the latest scientific and medical technologies.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Betty Mason of Sherman; son, Bill Mason and wife Cindy of Whitesboro; daughters, Jeanne Hamilton and husband Ronnie of Rowlett; Jan Gutos and husband Dan of Joplin, Missouri; and Judy Mason of Denison; nine grandchildren, Stephnie McKissack, Stacie Wallace, David and Kelly Gutos, Brooke Laing, Robert Scullin, Austin Mason, Jennifer Johnson and Johnathan Harmon; 13 great-grandchildren, Blair, Brock and Bryce McKissack, Hudson, Mason and Reese Wallace, Gillian Johnson, Courtney, Kylie and Jace Harmon, Jasmine and Hunter Rose and Trinity Laing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Joyce Harmon. 

Pallbearers were Bob Johnson, Ron Anderson, David Carroll, Dick Malnory, Bob Whitmire, and Bud Wilson.
Special pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Austin Mason, Arron Johnson, Robert Scullin, David Gutos, Joe McKissack, Trey Wallace and Johnathan Harmon.

The family of Bert Mason would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Sherman Fire Department, Homestead of Sherman, the staff of Wilson N. Jones Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center, Woods Street Church of Christ and the many friends who gave their love and support. 
A memorial has been set up for Special Olympics in his name at Texoma Tornados Special Olympics, in care of Sheila at 115 Natchez, Pottsboro, Tx. 75076. Memorials may also be made to the Grayson County Blood Bank.
