Lewis M. Merritt
died 18 July 1886
Aged 23 Years
Sherman  Daily Democrat
19 July 1886

At 1:15 yesterday morning Lew Merritt died at the residence of Lee Totten, on North Montgomery street, and yesterday his remains were interred in the West Side Cemetery, followed by a large number of friends.  The services both at the house and at the long resting place were conducted by the Rev. J. M. Binkley, of the Travis Street Methodist Church.
The deceased was a young man in the twenty third year of his life and had been a resident of this city for eleven years.  Perhaps there was no young man of a more congenial or pleasant disposition, nor one more calculated to make warm friends than was Lew Merritt.
The deceased contracted the fearful malady which finally took from his life by exposure to cold some two years since, and from that time until his death yesterday morning he has been slowly and surely drifting toward the inevitable, although no efforts have been spared by kind and loving relative to alleviate the pains of the sufferer and to battle the demon consumption.
