Frank Abernethy

Feb 28, 1921 - Jun 30, 2011

Services for John Frank Abernethy will be held Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Stephen Warren, former pastor of Forest Avenue Baptist Church will officiate and he will be assisted by Frank's son, John Abernethy. Mr. Abernethy passed away June 30, 2011 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ. Burial will follow at West Hill Cemetery. Waldo Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Frank was born February 28, 1921 in High Shoals, NC to Henry Miles and Bertha (Rhyne) Abernethy.
After high school, Frank worked at Carolina Mills in High Shoals, NC and played baseball. He was often referred to as the "Clouting Outfielder". His hope to play professional baseball was put on hold while he served in the Army in Europe in WWII. After the war, he returned to pursue baseball. He was in the Dodger's farm system until 1948 when he decided to start family life by marrying Marjorie Smith; he went to work for Burlington Industries. He was transferred to Sherman in 1957 as weaving manager and worked until retirement in 1986. He was an avid golfer and made five hole-in-ones at Woodlawn.
Frank loved people and loved to grow more vegetables than he could possibly eat, so he could give a lot away. He loved God and was a faithful member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church. Integrity, loyalty and character are words that described him best.
Preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, he is survived by his wife Marjorie; son John Frank (Dusty) Abernethy, Jr. and wife Susan; grandchildren Nate Abernethy and Ben Abernethy all of Plano; brother Bill Abernethy and wife Inez of Lincolnton, NC; sisters Ruby Tisdale of Greenville, SC, Lillian Tisdale of Cherryville NC and Ella Heafner of High Shoals, NC; half-sisters Phyllis Friday of High Shoals, NC, Frances McCollum and Shirley Abernethy both of Lincolnton, NC; brother-in-law Kenn Smith and wife Faye of Jonesboro, GA and other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 PM Friday, July 1st at Waldo Funeral Home.
